20,000 years ago, the invention of the fish hook marked the beginning of sport fishing. The first hooks were made of wood or bones. As technology improved, so did the hooks. Records show that copper hooks were made in Banchen 7,000 years ago and artificial flies were used in Egypt 4,000 years ago. Fishing was also a popular form of entertainment in ancient China. Today, modern materials and manufacturing techniques have resulted in hundreds of styles of extremely high quality hooks, designed for specific types of fish and fishing methods.

The methods used in creating Gamakatsu hooks is what makes it so superior to all other brands. First, only the most premium grade of high carbon steel is used. This insures against any blemishes in the metal which can weaken the hook.

Secondly, Gamakatsu has the most advanced tempering system in the world. Every hook is heated to the exact temperature that is perfect for that particular style and size then cooled in oil. This process produces hooks which are super strong, but not brittle. It is extremely difficult to achieve a balance between strength and flexibility, and it took many years for Gamakatsu to perfect this process.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our sharpening process is the most modern in the world, and results in a perfectly conical point that is unequaled in sharpness. Gamakatsu's most versatile hook, the Gamakatsu Octopus Hook has long been known for its durability and strength. The Octopus hook comes in a wide variety of sizes, colors and finishes, including fluorescent finishes.

Excellent Bait Hooks
March 14, 2015
I use these with a snell for bait rigs targeting panfish. The upturned eye puts the hook point right in the line of pull with maximum exposure. The wire is light but plenty strong for how I use them.
Pros- Sticky sharp - High percentage of hookups

went reef fishing in the Philippines last December. My cousin says they use size 8 hooks. Brought and used this and wallaaa - I'm catching doubles and often but they're not. These Gamakatsu are really sharp and precise. Yeah, shared and even left some for them. So I bought a bunch lately to bring again next month.

One of the best that I've used.

First this hook comes in that Japanese hook size. It is different from the sizes we are used to by being just a bit larger than the next size down in those sizes we are used to. I get there from Tackle Direct because I know of no other place which stocks the 9/0 that I use. Because of that size differential they are just a bit larger than the regular size 8/0 that we are used to, but it gives me a wider gap that allows me to use the larger bait that I need. I use this size for heavy duty cat fishing in an aria where 40-60Lb cat fish are caught regularly and 90 is not unheard of. Some of the trot line fishermen here use 7/0 regular trot line hooks in SS. These hooks/w the 30 degree down bend in the eye allow for easy snelling to a leader. The points are needle sharp. And I have never had one rust.
ProsOff set so less losses. Black chrome so no rust. Needle sharp points.
ConsThey are not free...LOL...

All I use
July 10, 2014
I use these hooks on my surf rod for small sharks 2-5 foot. I've never had one come out or straighten. Setting the hook is very easy. Once that point hits the corner of the fishes mouth they pretty much hook their selves.
ProsUltra sharp, never rust and good hook sets.

I want to use these hooks to Texas rig. Will they be good for this? I purchased them on a whim because I can tell they are very well made and thought out. Just wanted to know what some of the designers intended applications for this hook are.
This hook would be perfect for Texas rigging.

Do you sell the Gamakatsu Octopus hooks in boxes of 100? I usually buy them this way as a custom fly tier and would prefer to purchase them in lots of 100. I also have a fly tying and guiding business and would like to inquire about dealer/guide pricing. Do you allow for this or have this as an option?
25 packs are the largest we sell the Octopus in Bulk. They are shown on this page:
