First Impressions: Well...Have not had the time to really test this reel in saltwater. This type of (inshore) fishing will come in the summer of 2017. But have done some Bass fishing with this item and so far so good. I really like the Slammer's Dura-Drag System which is well known for it's reliability. And the Slammer III's machined "Brass" gear system will surly add to the reel's longevity. Since I am not a great fan of plastics in fishing reels, Penn's use of a full metal body, side plate, and rotor pleases me greatly. As well as it's (fairly well) sealed body and spool. In other words the buyer is receiving a great deal of reel for a modest amount of money. This fishing product also feels very solid in the hand..And the confidence it gives me, that it will hold up with (reasonably) heavy use. Is it as good as the Penn Torque? Not really. But neither is the buyer paying more then double the cost of the Torque. Keep it properly cleaned, oiled and stored...And this Penn should last the buyer a considerable length of time. Enough said.
ProsHave said more then enough already. Read the above statement.
ConsWould like this reel to have a Line Roller Bearing, not a Bushing. Keep the Bushing clean and oiled.

Just purchased the Slammer. Plan on using it the first chance I get. Read a lot of positive reviews about it and will comment on it's performance in the future.

Smoothest Reel in my arsenal

Reels are monsters! PS3 7500 paired with Penn Carnage 2 loaded with 60# depth hunter for cobia, blackfin, dolphin, yellowfin, sails and the occasional white marlin to cast at. This thing gives them the business! Would never need the 50# of drag it offers but good to know if I hooked a huge yellow or even a small bft I would have a chance to stop em.
ProsSmooth as ice

I've taken this reel out a few times, No fish but it casts well and handles like a dream!
ProsGreat cast-ability and a very comfortable cranking handle.
ConsSlightly heavier than expected but that is not a big issue.

Looking forward to spring striper fishing with Slammer III
November 30, 2016
The reel will not see action until this spring. My hope is it will stand up to a few dunks in the surf and lots of wave spray.

The 3500 too small for surf fishing?
It's on the smaller side but depends on what you're fishing for. I probably wouldn't fish smaller than the 4500.
