A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.

More Features:
  • New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
  • 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
  • Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
  • Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
  • Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
  • Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes

The reel is very strong and durable given the length of time I have used it, but the reel loses its free spin and smoothness with time. The oscillation gear, over time, begins to wear into the reel's frame which causes a significant decrease in free spin and smoothness. I never did have an issue with the main gear though. Over all, this reel is one of the toughest little reels on the market. It just isn't the most refined over time (1 year), but I have actually still kept it in use up until now. I got this reel when the SSV's first came out.
ProsTop Notch Drag, Superior Line Lay, Solid Frame and Rotor,
ConsPoor smoothness and free spin over time. Anti-reverse can be hit or miss if not kept extra clean.

I love the Spinfisher V. I already have a 4500 plus a Penn Battle, I usually fish off a beach. This is for my husband. Since we just bought a Sea Eagle inflatable fishing boat he can come with me and these are great as they are sealed. Tackle Direct was the best price and they delivered fast. Very happy!
ProsSealed drag and bearings. Less wind knots when using braid.
ConsA little tight on the drag but still work great.

I bought a few penn spinnfishers v when they just came on the market. I have now had them for 3 years and their still going strong after getting dunked in saltwater. These reels are so durable and easy to maintance, if you are looking for a first saltwater reel i highly recomend it ! will be getting myself another one of these any day now !
ProsSuper strong, quality drag system and very reliable
ConsA little heavy but it's an all metal reel so shoudlnt complain ;)

Quality Reel

This is all I buy and use now. Being very hard on equipment, fishing exclusively in saltwater, they inevitably get soaked (kayak and flats boat fishing). I was lucky to get a year out of other brands and these seem like they will last forever with basic maintenance. No real signs of ware after a couple of years of constant use. Maybe not the smoothest or lightest in the world, but incredibly durable.

Broken upon opening box

The Pennreal was seized and the bail would not lock when it arrived at the house. I had seen this comment by other users. Must have been built on a Monday. Tackle Direct was excellent and replaced the item.

Nice addition to Penn

These were my first Penn V's since I had always used slammers and SS models and I am very pleased with the performance. I have caught stripers in the 20-30 lb class this spring on both reels I purchased and found them be dependable and the drag is a huge improvement.
ProsDrag, the HT100 drag is outstanding in these reels. Anti-reverse, after all the trials of Penn's SS models with a poorly engineered anti-reverse dog these are a huge improvement.
ConsI'm not sure if it is the grease directly form the factory or will turn out to be a minor problem but they tend to turn rough. I use lures at night when fishing stripers and you have to turn the reel so slowly it's painful to draw a strike, it's during the retrieve that I feel both reels turning rough - not nearly as smooth as the Penn Slammers right out of the box. It may be a mere maintenance issue but it is an issue out of the box.

2 spinfisher diff. results
April 9, 2013
I recently purchased 2 spinfisher 3500 for me and my son. One reel is very smooth and fluid, the other feels like it's grinding gears on the retrieve. Happy with one dissappointed in the other. I live on the water so I asked another fisherman to try both out and give me his opinion. His analysis was spot on with mine. I have to get my act together for a return which is a pain in the a__.
ProsOne reel is everything you could want in a reel.
ConsOne reel is everything you don't want in a reel.

Would it be okay to use 10lb mono/fluoro on this reel. Would using line that is one bigger, cause any issues with fishability?
This reel is perfect for using 10 lb mono/fluoro and there would be no issues using that pound test.
