A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.

More Features:
  • New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
  • 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
  • Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
  • Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
  • Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
  • Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes

I bought a few penn spinnfishers v when they just came on the market. I have now had them for 3 years and their still going strong after getting dunked in salt water. These reels are so durable and easy to maintance, if you are looking for a first saltwater reel i highly recomend it !

Since TD has this on sale I decided I couldn't go wrong with a semi-sealed reel for under $100. I have only used it a few times but I am very impressed with it. I paired it with my older 9' Lami SS and it feels great paired to this rod. It's nice and light, casts well and has a good drag. I haven't caught anything big on it yet but so far so good.
ProsLight weight surf reel Good drag Semi-sealed Price
ConsGears but this wont be an issue because if they go I will replace them with the new machined gear set

Light & Strong
November 26, 2014
I have been very happy with the Penn SSV5500 & needed a lighter reel to match with my lighter pole, so I tried the SSV4500. At 6 oz lighter than it's older brother it has proven to be very nimble & light allowing for comfortable casting over long periods of time. Like my other Penn reel it does not sacrifice much in the way of stopping power regardless of its size...this reel is the Manny Pacquiao of the fishing reel game!
ProsLight Strong

Good reel for SW
June 2, 2014
I use this primarily in a kayak. It works fine, but it is a little sluggish, when compared to my Shimano CI4 reels. I has handled everything I've hooked just fine. I've beat it up and it is still motoring along.

How much line can you get on it, if it's 17 to 20lb mono. Good idea? Or should I just go with 30lb braid.
I would recommend the 30 lb power pro braided line.

Can you put 10 LBS braid on it even though it recommends 15, 20 and 30? Wil it affect casting or anything on the reel?
Hello James, It will effect the reel, however for the better, The capacity of the reel with 10 lbs braid will increase and you would be able to cast the reel a little bit farther.

Whats the difference between the 4500 and 4500 LL
The LL has a live liner feature which is a secondary drag system. This allows the fish to pull line from the spool loosely while the bail arm is closed. You can then turn the handle which will engage your main drag and set the hook.
