A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.

More Features:
  • New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
  • 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
  • Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
  • Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
  • Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
  • Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes
  • LC - Long Cast - designed with the avid surf fisherman in mind

Heavy and some what clunky but nice drag
I have three of these reels in two different sizes. They are a decent reel for the money and their drag excels compared to a Shimano bait runner in the same price range but the rest of the reel isn't as nice. I know these reels are supposed to be sealed but I have had to send two of them in for service after the bait runner stopped working on on and the other was stiff. They actually didn't service them and sent me a new reel in one instance. These reels are like a Chevy truck and a Shimano is a Corvette in comparison. The truck will get will get you there and carry a load but the ride is a lot nicer and exhilarating in the vette.

Got the 6500LL for live baiting kings or drift fishing and for chumming for cobia. Could use them for baiting large drum too. Great versatile rod. I paired them with 8' battalions for launching heavy jigs at skitish cobia or drum.

Penn Spinfisher VSSV8500LL
This is a great reel for light trolling, deep drop for yellowtail, or flatlining for almost anything! I have my 8500LL on 20-50lb rod with 40lb braid, and use it every trip. Casting live bait out near a deadline, or flatlining a live bait behind the boat when we are deep dropping on a reef. Love the Live liner feature to spoil out line by itself. Great drag when you need it pulling in a kingfish.
ProsLive lever is great for spoiling out line on a live bait. Drag is perfect for medium to heavy fish. Smooth realing and drag through the fight.
ConsReal is a little heavy for a long day of fishing.

Great reel for the money.
The 6500BLS was the first reel I picked up when I got into surfcasting. It performed far and above my expectations for multiple seasons without fail. It is now a backup to my Van Staals, but I can't praise this bad boy enough. It survived multiple dunks with no water intrusion. I would not recommend swimming with it, but it can handle the occasional waves no problem. After just two cleanings and greasings in two years it still works just as great as the day I took it out of the box. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to boost their reel arsenal.

Very smooth and solid construction
I currently own multiple Shimano and Daiwa spinning reels and by far this one feels the most sturdy and solid in your hands. Just tested this with the Penn Batallion Surf Rod the other day in Assateague and it handled a 45 inch striper with no issues. I currently have 40 lb braid with 60lb mono leader on this thing and it handles extremely well.

Solid Tank
The reel is very strong and durable given the length of time I have used it, but the reel loses its free spin and smoothness with time. The oscillation gear, over time, begins to wear into the reel's frame which causes a significant decrease in free spin and smoothness. I never did have an issue with the main gear though. Over all, this reel is one of the toughest little reels on the market. It just isn't the most refined over time (1 year), but I have actually still kept it in use up until now. I got this reel when the SSV's first came out.
ProsTop Notch Drag, Superior Line Lay, Solid Frame and Rotor,
ConsPoor smoothness and free spin over time. Anti-reverse can be hit or miss if not kept extra clean.

GREAT FOR LIVE BAIT
I've been a big fan of liveliner/baitrunner type reels since their introduction into the market place. I've owned Shimano, Okuma and now Penn versions of these types of reels. Having used this reel for three years now. there is nothing about it that I don't love. They are relatively light in weight, are sealed, have very good line capacity and in my opinion they have the best drags around. Both the liveliner drag and the main drag are easy to adjust and silky smooth. If you're looking for a liveliner type of reel I don't think you can get a better one than this.

Penn Spinfisher V 4500 Spinning Reel
I have paired this reel with the machined CNC gears from Penn and I will tell you this reel kicks butt! I spent several nights on the rocks and got soaking wet and even dunked this reel with no problems. The drag system has enough power to handle 30/40lb stripers and keep on ticking. Get yourself one and see, I'm sure you will be pleased!

Great Surf Reel
Bought this reel to pair it with a 10 foot medium heavy, fast action rod for throwing metal and plugs. It is pretty impressive the distance achieved from this spinning reel! At first turning the handle felt smooth but sluggish then after a day of fishing it loosens up a bit and less effort has to be exerted to turn the handle and you can retrieve much faster with much less effort. The bail wire is thicker than the older model SSVs and everything else on the reel feels just as tough as the other Penn products. A few waves broke over the reel while I was out. When I got home I took the reel apart to clean it up and there was zero water inside which is pretty impressive because the reel was submerged a few times.

spinfisher V 6500
this is my 3rd spinfisher in the last 3 years. I first bought a 5500, then a 4500, now I have the 6500. They are freakin great reels for the surf, and for catfishing in freshwater. Very smooth and reliable. The drag on the reel are wonderful when horsing in big Drum off the beaches of N.C. (ramp 44). And the Bluefish don't stand a chance. Switching to the Spinfisher V's are one the best moves I made.

Quality Reel
This is all I buy and use now. Being very hard on equipment, fishing exclusively in saltwater, they inevitably get soaked (kayak and flats boat fishing). I was lucky to get a year out of other brands and these seem like they will last forever with basic maintenance. No real signs of ware after a couple of years of constant use. Maybe not the smoothest or lightest in the world, but incredibly durable.

Great Reel!
Although I have no had the opportunity to use this exact reel yet, I bought it because of a charter I went on a month ago. I have always been a big fan of Shimano's reels and have been quite loyal to the brand. I charted a trip in Florida a month ago and they had a lot of Penn gear on board. Once I used the Penn Spinfisher, "live-liner", I knew I had to get one for myself. The reel is incredibly smooth, the live-liner feature was flawless, and it's built like a work horse. The captain told me one of the reasons he uses them is because of their durability, you can't kill these things! I was even more pleased when I went to order one and found out they are priced so well. You get a lot of reel for the price. As I have to replace gear over the coming years due to wear and tear, I will be replacing my arsenal of gear with Penn reels. I am very happy with the quality fo the product as well as the price. You can't go wrong with this line of reels!

This is a great reel when it comes to a live bite. The release on the spool is outstanding when fishing for Stripers or Blues. Great for Surf Fishing
I use a size 6500 for surf fishing on long island. This reel is tough, smooth, and affordable. While not fully sealed to keep the saltwater out, it does a fine job at handling splashing and very brief dunks in the water. Just rinse in freshwater after each use and occasionally clean and lube the inside and this reel will last a lifetime. Perfect size for striper and bluefish, feels very balanced on my 10' surf rod. I use #40 braided line with a mono backing, although this is a superline spool so no backing is actually required. Tackledirect shipped extremely fast and i couldn't be happier!

Excellent Reel!
I spooled this reel with 30lb power pro super slick and ran it direct to my terminal tackle setup for drum with a fish finder rig. The reel was mounted to a heavy action 12 foot Hurricane Typhoon. This reel is a perfect match for that rod as it is a good heavy counterbalance to the rod. This is not a reel for a lightweight lure caster, but it excels as a great 8 and bait rod and reel setup. My first cast at home with a moderate power Hatteras cast landed a 4 oz. lead 330 feet into wind. After getting used to the setup the casts were longer with a bit more practice and power, exceeding 350 feet with 4 oz. I'm not a power caster and not great at form, but for me I was impressed with the distance this reel can muster. Fished the beaches at Hatteras Island with this rig and it was my go to for long casts to the outer edges of the trough near the first bar breakers off the beach at low tide. The line lay was perfect out of the box and contributed greatly to its ability to cast smooth and far. I did not have a chance to experience the drag on a large fish, but I'm sure it will handle anything that the 30lb braid could handle. Great looking reel, that won't break the bank, and excellent operation for 2 weeks at the beach. I'm considering another one for a 10 Foot heavy action rod as well.
ProsSmooth, long casts, handles braid line very well, reasonably priced, great looks
ConsNot any other than wish penn would make another SSVLC in a smaller, lighter platform for light rod application.

This is a nice, solid reel for the money. Casts well and is very smooth. I use the 4500 on a 7' Penn Regiment and feel that its the perfect match. I highly recommend

Smooth and Powerful
I matched this reel with a St. Croix TSRS100M2 Triumph Surf Rod. It is a perfect match both weight and balance. The Spinfisher V has a nice way of spoiling your line so it comes off smooth. The retrieve is very smooth and not that it is that important but the reel looks great.

Excellent saltwater reel
Usual Penn quality. Big, all metal, and gets the job done. Highly recommended
ProsThese reels are made for the saltwater environment. This model has a ton of line capacity, and can handle big fish.
ConsThe weight, but this is expected with a reel of this size.

Built Penn tough
Very nice reel built by penn. Glad I don't have to worry about breaking off a $20-$30 lure with the bailless feature, and doing it without spending the $700+ on the other bailless sealed reels. If your on a budget and want a good sealed reel (not completely so I wouldn't go dunking it) and the bailless feature, go with this!
Prossealed, bailless, built penn tough!
Consfinish scratches easily

live liner
New spinfisher live liner.. it has been changed the design much nicer. mechanism on live lining is better than bait runner because it has more articulation. overall construction is also beyond bait runner..

Best reel under $200
I can't find any flaws with the reel, I have dunked it and lost it underwater for a little while and it is still very smooth. The Penn SSV is the best reel for surf fishing under $200, maybe even more.

Casts a mile!
I paired this reel with my 11 foot Ron Arra Rod, it is a long cast reel. I added distance to my cast. The spool setup on this reel allows for less resistance as the line leaves the spool, it does allow for longer casts!
ProsLine lay, weight of reel, speed os retreve, ease of casting

Awesome Reel!
I used this reel all last fall paired with a St. Croix Triumph 10' Surf Rod and I caught a lot of big fish with it! The drag is super smooth, and I dunked it quite a few times and it's still reels like it's brand new! If you want a bail-less reel but can't afford a Van Staal or a ZeeBass, this is the best next thing!
ProsStrong Smooth Water Tight Bail-Less.

Great feel and great power for Shark Fishing
I purchased two of these for sark fishing on the OBX with a bait launcher. This reel was the perfect match for launching bait 300 yards offshore and landing the sharks and large rays the OBX has to offer. Yes the reel is HUGE however it is perfect for the sand fisher with tons of spool space for tons of line for those big battles. I would recommend this to anyone. Great product and super fast delivery from the TackleDirect guys.

Penn 7500LC
I bought this Penn 7500 LC reel along with the Lamiglas Ron Arra 1383-2 long cast rod. With all the snow haven't thrown the reel yet,. but it's true, it's a big reel that belongs on at least an 11 ft rod IMO. The reel came well greased and spins nice. I can't wait to use it soon enough.

Penn Strong
I love this reel!! I paired it up with and Ugly Stick tiger, and renamed the beef stick. I have put this reel to the test and love it. I love how strong this reel is. The drag is nice and will help from the big runners from getting away. The water tight design is nice to have when your out on the boat and get the occasional spray that comes up. I have had my 4th generation SpinFisher for about ten years now and it still works fine. This is before I knew how to take care of my reel. This reel has been in the sand, hit by ocean waves, and went a few years with out even being greased or lubed up. It is amazing how it lasted so long and believe my new spinfisher will last even longer.
ProsIt's a Penn!!

Looking for a reel to match up to my 12 ft penn prevail.
The 7500 LC Spinfisher is a great reel for casting great distances and has great durability. This reel would balance well with the 12' Prevail rod.

Would 7500lc work for virtical jigging on a shorter rod?
If you are looking for a vertical jigging reel than there would be no reason to use the LC (long cast) model of this reel. A standard Spinfisher V would be more appropriate.

Looking for a rod to pair with this reel. Used mainly for bass and other surf fishing in NJ. Will be used mainly for bait but maybe a heavy plug. Not looking to spend a fortune trying to keep it around $200. Any suggestions would be great.
The Tsunami Airwave Elite Surf Spinning Rods 9 ft - 10 ft would pair well with the Penn Spinfisher V SSV7500LC Spinning Reel Long Cast.
