A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.
- New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
- 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
- Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
- Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
- Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
- Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
- Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes

Got the 6500LL for live baiting kings or drift fishing and for chumming for cobia. Could use them for baiting large drum too. Great versatile rod. I paired them with 8' battalions for launching heavy jigs at skitish cobia or drum.
ProsLove the live liner drag setting
Conslittle heavy to cast all day

Loaded up with almost 500 yds of 30lb power pro. Wore my thumb out. Paired with a 10-6 St Croix mojo, lose sight of lure casting for far. Good power, line lay excellent, very strong drag.
ProsLots of line, drag, castability
ConsStill has forward and reverse switch. Wish was total anti reverse.

Awesome reel. Use it surf fishing in NC. Very good casting distance. Lots of muscle for bigger fish, my son has caught several 5-6' sandbar sharks on the reel already this year. Will also be using this for drum fishing.

This is a great reel for light trolling, deep drop for yellowtail, or flatlining for almost anything! I have my 8500LL on 20-50lb rod with 40lb braid, and use it every trip. Casting live bait out near a deadline, or flatlining a live bait behind the boat when we are deep dropping on a reef. Love the Live liner feature to spoil out line by itself. Great drag when you need it pulling in a kingfish.
ProsLive lever is great for spoiling out line on a live bait. Drag is perfect for medium to heavy fish. Smooth realing and drag through the fight.
ConsReal is a little heavy for a long day of fishing.
Great reel for the money.

The 6500BLS was the first reel I picked up when I got into surfcasting. It performed far and above my expectations for multiple seasons without fail. It is now a backup to my Van Staals, but I can't praise this bad boy enough. It survived multiple dunks with no water intrusion. I would not recommend swimming with it, but it can handle the occasional waves no problem. After just two cleanings and greasings in two years it still works just as great as the day I took it out of the box. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to boost their reel arsenal.
ProsRelatively inexpensive, all around great reel. Very smooth. A+++

Great reel with strong drag and a ton of line capacity. Great popping reel as well.
Very smooth and solid construction

I currently own multiple Shimano and Daiwa spinning reels and by far this one feels the most sturdy and solid in your hands. Just tested this with the Penn Batallion Surf Rod the other day in Assateague and it handled a 45 inch striper with no issues. I currently have 40 lb braid with 60lb mono leader on this thing and it handles extremely well.
ConsA bit heavier than the Japanese brands
December 1, 2016
Reel was smooth right out the box ,there was none broken pieces or missing parts
ProsBuilt with quality
ConsShipping service lost my first order so they had to re-ship my order and took longer then needed but wasn't too bad

Really a well made reel. Have had success using when fishing for Barracuda and Mackerel.
November 13, 2016
The reel is very strong and durable given the length of time I have used it, but the reel loses its free spin and smoothness with time. The oscillation gear, over time, begins to wear into the reel's frame which causes a significant decrease in free spin and smoothness. I never did have an issue with the main gear though. Over all, this reel is one of the toughest little reels on the market. It just isn't the most refined over time (1 year), but I have actually still kept it in use up until now. I got this reel when the SSV's first came out.
ProsTop Notch Drag, Superior Line Lay, Solid Frame and Rotor,
ConsPoor smoothness and free spin over time. Anti-reverse can be hit or miss if not kept extra clean.

GREAT FOR LIVE BAIT

I've been a big fan of liveliner/baitrunner type reels since their introduction into the market place. I've owned Shimano, Okuma and now Penn versions of these types of reels. Having used this reel for three years now. there is nothing about it that I don't love. They are relatively light in weight, are sealed, have very good line capacity and in my opinion they have the best drags around. Both the liveliner drag and the main drag are easy to adjust and silky smooth. If you're looking for a liveliner type of reel I don't think you can get a better one than this.

ProsHolds up to a lot of abuse. Strong Drag

August 13, 2016
I have paired this reel with the machined CNC gears from Penn and I will tell you this reel kicks butt! I spent several nights on the rocks and got soaking wet and even dunked this reel with no problems. The drag system has enough power to handle 30/40lb stripers and keep on ticking. Get yourself one and see, I'm sure you will be pleased!
ProsLightweight Great drag Doesn't throw wind knots Water resistant

Just got my hands on this reel and I love it so far. Having a sealed drag takes a lot of worry about dunking this reel in the water away. Seems very strong so far.

August 4, 2016
The real is the biggest reel I've ever seen and bought it's extremely smooth and surprisingly lighter than it looks and can hold a lot of line and to top it all when I go surf fishing I don't have to worry about water getting in the reel
Great Surf Reel
August 4, 2016
Bought this reel to pair it with a 10 foot medium heavy, fast action rod for throwing metal and plugs. It is pretty impressive the distance achieved from this spinning reel! At first turning the handle felt smooth but sluggish then after a day of fishing it loosens up a bit and less effort has to be exerted to turn the handle and you can retrieve much faster with much less effort. The bail wire is thicker than the older model SSVs and everything else on the reel feels just as tough as the other Penn products. A few waves broke over the reel while I was out. When I got home I took the reel apart to clean it up and there was zero water inside which is pretty impressive because the reel was submerged a few times.
Proswater tight, thick bail wire, 20lbs of drag

Love this reel! Very smooth and while a bit heavy the functionality makes up for it. You won't go wrong with this one!

Caught a 25lb Cobia my first time out with it. Action is smooth and powerful drag if you need it. Have not used for live lining yet but seems like it will do fine.

Hi,I would like to know what reel to get I mainly fish from shore in the north east.I am thinking about the FIN-NOR offshore 7500 or PENN SPINFHISHER 8500 witch reel would be a better choice ?
hi, I would suggest the spinfisher over the fin nor. the Fin nor is going to be a little bit heavier then the penn. The fin nor is more of a boat offshore reel.

wht lb mono test woud you put on this reel for sharks from the beach. shark size is 2-6ft. average size would be 4-5ft. would you let me know.
We suggest 50-65# BRAID. You will need a lot of line capacity for beach sharking. You might not be able to hold enough mono on that reel. 40# mono would be the lightest mono we suggest.
