Great lightweight reel.

Bought this for my 5yr old to take fishing on the ocean in So California with me. It's lightweight and easy to use for him, I enjoy using it myself too. We have it loaded to the top with 300yds of 50# spectra.

Corroded spools after one season
November 20, 2015
I purchased two Penn squalls this season (SQL50LW and SQL60LD) to replace my older Penn GTI reels used mainly for striped bass fishing. I have been very impressed with the reel performance but extremely disappointed with how both spools have held up after only one season. The spools quickly became corroded even with vigorously washing the reels after each saltwater use. My GTI setups remained corrosion free after 8+ years of similar fishing and washing patterns. I have always fished Penn reels exclusively because I know the reel will function properly and land fish for many years to come. Unfortunately, the materials used in the new Penn Squall reels just do not seem to be the same quality of older Penn models. This review has been posted on the Penn website, however, Penn seems to remove negative reviews of their products.

Value for Money Reel
June 25, 2014
Weekend finally came where I had the chance to use this reel. It was shipped by TD on urgent basis to enable me to use it for the weekend. Thanks TD for the excellent service. Back to the reel, it feels big but when matched to a Heavy Jig rod, it was just the right size. Spooled Sufix 832 65 lbs and it was good to go. Used it in waters 100-150 yards deep. Retrieve was smooth despite it having 2 bearings and not too tiring due to its 35 inch retrieve per turn. Landing a fighter fish of 10 lb was easy with its 20 lb drag. This is my first Penn. After this experience, I am going to get more of Penn reels. Solid build and manageable weight. Excellent value for money!
ProsLarge spool capacity. Much cheaper than other reels of similar specs and size. Good retrieve length of 35 inch per turn. Good drag of 20 lb.
ConsCan't think of any for something at this price point !

great little reel
November 21, 2013
paired this with an ugly stik tiger lyte. powerful enough for bottom fishing down to about 150 ft. it only has a retrieve rate of about 28 in. very pleasant to use, instant anti-reverse and I love that color being matched perfectly with the rod. my son loved using it reeling in huge red rockfish and Bolinas. no regrets here.

Would this be a good reel for surf shark fishing?
We would recommend the Squall VSW series for shark fishing. At the very least the squall lever drag series without the level wind.

Is the 50 enough to handle sharks 4-7' from the surf? I will be kayaking baits out so not worried about casting. Putting on a 6'6 heavy rod
the Penn Squall 50 would be large enough to handle sharks in the 4-7 ft range. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.

is it good enough for tuna and mahi mahi in the pacific?
For small tuna and mahi this would be fine. If you wanted to tackle larger tuna, I would recommend a reel with a lever drag.

Does this reel suitable for trolling some wahoos? Nd tuna fishing..
While this reel can handle wahoo and tuna we do not recommend level wind reels for this application. I would strongly consider the Squall LD series in the 60 size for wahoo and tuna trolling. See the link below for this reel If you have any questions on this or any other reels please feel free to contact our product specialist. Direct +1-609-788-3819 Email -Paul

from Portland, OR asked:

would these reels be suited for cod/halibut fishing in Norway? and which model do you suggest?
Yes and no. They have plenty of line capacity to get the job done, but the gear ratio may not be the best. You might want to look at a two speed reel. They will give you the torque needed to lift the big boys off the bottom in deep and fast water.
