Two major problems with design
September 30, 2013
I have almost two dozen Penn reels including six Squall 60LDs. Overall they perform well and are a good value. They do have two design problems which are significant enough that I will never buy any more. First, when slow trolling for billfish with live/dead natural bait on circle hooks using clips, you want to use no drag and let the clicker prevent backlash which will occur at initial strike. The clickers on these reels chronically fail. Second, the "switchblade" harness lugs stink. I don't know who thought this up but it wasn't a fisherman. They are impossible to hook up by yourself and difficult to use with help. With multiple hookups during a hot bite, help isn't always available. Penn needs to test such features with actual fishermen on the water before incorporating them in their products--the old fixed lugs worked just fine.

Pros:Good drag, good value
Cons:Clickers and "switchblade" harness lugs suck.
