Qualia began as a company that supplied rod and reel parts to many of the major fishing companies. As their business grew, the company began to develop and patent their own reel and rod designs. They created reels for some of the biggest names in fishing, including Penn, Mitchell, Shakespeare, Abu Garcia and Zebco. In 2005, the company decided to put all of that experience to work and start another company to sell their own brand of reels. They named it Qualia, a play on the word ''quality''.
