Worst spinning reel that I have ever owned.....
October 10, 2013
and I've owned plenty.
I bought one of these for my inshore sport fishing business in Costa Rica. All my equipment is topnotch and well cared for. Everything, including my boat, engines and tackle is cleaned with Salt Away on a daily basis without exception.
This reel started to corrode from under the finish in 3 weeks. The aluminum frame started to soften and expand under the finish and then the inner workings started to go. It was lubed on a bi-daily basis and soon wouldn't spin when you tried to turn the handle.
I know that there are many spinning reels out there that are more expensive than this but in my opinion, this is not a cheap reel and should give a reasonably long service when not abused.
I also hate the "infinite anti reverse." This does nothing more than make a long day of fishing all that much longer and frustrating, having to hastle with reeling it in and watching the reel to hopefully stop the bail in the top position so that you can grab the line with your finger to make each and every cast.....which can add up to virtually hundreds of casts a day. Then if you reel it in and stop where you can reach the line but your lure isn't in close enough to make the cast you need to make another turn and hope that the lure isn't too close to the rod tip because if it is you have to strip out line against the drag to adjust. Frustrating and almost all spinning reels are made like this.
Except the Shimano Spirex with the quick cast lever. I love these reels and have replaced all spinning reels with these. They are a joy to use, balanced so that there is no wobble when reeling and when kept clean they hold up well in salt water use as well. At half the price of the "Boca" I figured that I'd just replace them when the salt got to them but after 3 years of use they are still working great look like new and are a pleasure to fish with.
Save your money and do not buy the Boca.
