The Shimano Ultegra XS Surf Spinning Reels feature Shimano X-Ship gearing for improved smoothness, efficiency, and power. These reels also feature slow oscillation for precision line lay and propulsion line management system for great castability.

  • X-Ship: Positioning the pinion gear close to the center line of the large diameter drive gear, more power is transferred from the handle to the rotor, the pinion gear is supported by 2 Shimano A-RB roller bearings to create more stability
  • Aero Wrap II: is a worm gear oscillation system with specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides great uniform line lay to reduce loss of eneergy during the cast
  • Shimano Instant Drag

Good Idea in a Bad Design
February 21, 2015
It casts like a rocket, as advertised. Unfortunately, it is not sealed in any way, and cannot survive the rigors of surf casting. My reel was starting to grind in less than 4 months. Shimano's customer service has been less than stellar. Unless you are prepared to break the reel down, clean its interior parts, and grease/re-oil the gears and bearings at least weekly, don't waste your money.
ProsCasts great.
ConsNot suitable for the rigors of surf fishing.

Looking at this reel for Baja...dorado, roster, tuna, yellow tail, etc... which rod would this pair up nicely for long casting from beach or trolling from the back of the boat...thinking 50# braid?
The Crowder EST7040S E-Series Spin Troll Rod and Shimano Tiralejo Surf Spinning Rod would pair well with the Shimano Ultegra XSC Surf Spinning Reel for trolling and surf casting.

I have the 5500 xsc and the Penn Previal 10' looking for long cast. How this reel works with the St Croix Mojo surf 10' or Triumph Surf 10' or smaller size will be better.
Jesus, The Ultegra XSC will pair excellently with the Mojo Surf. The Mojo surf is designed with light weight surf guides designed for long cast surf reel systems. I would recommend going with a 10 or 9 foot rod.

if i order this reel will you load the spool with power pro line
Michael, we will spool reels free with mono only, but if you would like power pro braid spooled on your reel, you would have to pay for the braid and we will gladly spool it on your reel. Just leave us a comment in the order instructions/comments box on the check out screen.

I'm looking for a rod and reel setup for extremely long cast. I will be using this rod & reel for Largemouth bass, throwing a Strike King 10XD crankbait , which weighs about 2 ounces. I was looking at the Shimano Ultegra XSC 5500 & the Shimano Tiralejo 10'6" med. I'm am looking for something outside of the normal baitcaster & 7-8ft rod, that is used for this type of presentation. I need to get extra long distance to get extra running depth & the ability to cover more water. Would this combination be the best to achieve maximum distance & still be able to haul the rod in a 21 ft bass boat? Thanks!
Travis, While this is a little bit unusual use for a surf rod but, I would recommend using a 7 or 8 ft. St. Croix Mojo Surf, out of those two the 7ft Medium seems to be the best bet to throw the 2 ounce crank bait. Even though this is a 7 ft rod they are designed for maximum distance when casting.

when i cast the bail does not close when i turn the handle...just bought two 5500 xsc
The new long cast reels all have manual bails. They must be closed by hand after the cast. This helps to reduce the amount of line twist.

Is the 5500 spool and 10000 spool interchangeable on this reel? Will any other spool fit on this reel that is a different size?
No, the spools are not interchangeable. Because this reel is designed for distance casting, only the spool designed for the specific reel will fit.
