St. Croix TSRS100M2 Triumph Surf Rod
October 27, 2016
I was really excited to own and fish with this new Saint Croix Triumph Surf rod. Unfortunately on my first trip out the rod failed by breaking on the upper section just above where the two halves connect. The rod is rated from 3/4oz - 4oz. I was at Fort Baker, CA just on the North side of the Golden Gate Bridge. The conditions were a storm past the night before and a new one approaching. The winds out of the West at 20-25 mph with light rain and 8 to 11 feet of surf. That why I chose the Bay side instead of the beach. The first cast Lingcod! 3rd cast Rockcod! I'm doing great. The wind at my back while fishing from a rocky point the sweep was moving to my right at a strong pace. So I went up for using a 2oz sinker to a 3oz sinker rigged Carolina style. Boom, my new toy broke on the 2nd or 3rd cast. Probably a factory defect. I decided to replace with a Lamiglas. Yet to see how the new Lami will work out.
ProsLight weight, responsive.
ConsNot sure if this break above where the two halves join is an outlier or a common defect.

Great Inexpensive Rod
October 26, 2016
I was looking for a rod with a little more backbone to use with heavier lures in open beach spots. This has met that need perfectly allowing me to get the distance I was looking for when using heavy 2-3 Oz bucktails and Superstrike lures. The rod is very well made and relatively inexpensive compared to the higher end make and models. I would highly recommend this rod to anyone looking for an all around durable and versatile surf rod not looking to spend a ton of money. It's not the best rod if a majority of the lures you use are on the lighter side (1/2 Oz- 1 Oz range) but this 10 ft model will certainly get the job done and still does nicely when using SP minnows and swim shads. I would recommend the 9 ft model if you primarily use lures around or under 1 Oz. Have caught numerous bass so far with this rod this fall and has handle them with ease. I do find it tough / use a lot of energy to work a pencil popper with properly. The distance from my reel to the butt of the rod is a little long for my liking but once I got use to it I don't notice it anymore.
ProsGreat price Can really launch lures in the 1-1/2 Oz - 3 Oz range No problem handling bigger fish
ConsNot great when casting lures 1 Oz or less Tough to work pencil poppers with Length between reel and rod butt

I like to use this for small bucktails, small plugs, redfins, bombers/SP's, and its capable of tossing a 2 3/8 popper if need be. I love it. Paired with an SSV4500, its great.

Montauk Rod

This rod is perfect for Montauk and its pretty cheap too. Tons of power to stop a big fish and its able to handle those bigger 3oz plugs. I love mine.

This is a great rod for my heavier plugging applications. It's true to its rating and I have had no issues casting 5oz and a chunk. Paired with a Van Staal VSX250, it is an unstoppable combo for big blues and other large species. Tackle Direct did a great job packing and shipping the rod. 10/10.

The rod is ok, but Ive broken 2 of them, they just dont make them like they used to. If you dont fish every day it would probably be fine. Its ony$25 for the replaacement blank when you break it so add that onto your price.
Prosdecent but not pro quality

una caņa ligera, resistente y confiable
July 7, 2015

Awesome Rod!
May 2, 2015
The 10' rod is very nice and well made, I have other models of the rod but this is my favorite. Not heavy and balances well with a Penn SSV6500BLS. Got to test it out and it handled a 25lb striper with ease. I highly recommend it!

The St. Croix Triumph Surf is my primary rod for everything when it's not to rough. It's paired with a Penn Conflict 6000 and it balances nicely.

Great rod!
September 16, 2013
Well let me preface by saying that I just got the rod so I haven't used it extensively. But I will comment on my first impressions. The rod looks good. grip is comfortable, tip is just the right stiffness for me. The finish matches perfectly with my penn spinfisher v- which is not a big deal by a nice happy coincidence. The rod casts well- on a recent trip in the back bay I had to slow my cast down because they were going too far with little effort. About the only thing I don't like about the rod is that all the guides are on the top section of the rod. I noticed other St Croix rods are the same way (if not all) and I get that it is for that 1 piece feel- but I like having a guide on the lower half- makes breaking the rod down for transport and storage a little easier- but I did just pick up a rod rack for my truck so I will only have to break it down when I get home so I can live with it.

Quiver of One
May 29, 2013
This is a great lightweight surf rod that has the versatility to handle a wide selection of artificials and bait (can effectively cast and work a 7.5inch slug go, 2 oz plug and cut bait). Additionally, at 8ft it’s not too long to use out of the kayak or on a boat. This rod can serve as a great quiver of one for Bass, Blues, Fluke, and even casting chunk bait off the beach for sharks. If you are only going to have one surf rod the St. Croix Triumph 8ft should be a consideration.
ProsVery versatile; great construction

Which would you recommend, this rod or the Star Stellar Surf SG76IS?
I would definitely recommend the St. Croix Triumph rod over the Star Stellar. The Triumph is of great quality for its price tag, and has a nice casting distance. But, another rod that is worth every penny is the Tsunami Airwave Elite ( http://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-airwave-elite-surf-spinning-rods.html ). The Airwave Elite receives great reviews from those who own it and is a popular favorite among surf fishermen that would like to stay within a reasonable budget.
