Perfect for sub 100lb Tuna!
This is a great reel. It is not perfect, but a great reel that is far superior to my VS150. The reason i got it was to cast at finicky tuna all day. You want a reel that is light and can muscle in the fish when need be. Just wish they would make a 250.

This thing is sick
Just picked this thing up and I'm so happy to finally have a dependable surf reel. I purchased the 175 and it took 512 yards of 40lb power pro which is more than enough for fishing the cape cod canal on other Massachusetts surf spots. Converting this reel was a little trickier than I thought it would be but ended up working out great. I would highly recommend this reel for anyone
ProsLightweight Easy to use Dependable
ConsNothing at all

I would pay a thousand for it.

Built like a tank
So normally I would wait to review an item until after I had given it extensive abuse. I decided to do a pre- and post- review on this reel. I bought it for use on the beach and when targeting larger fish in my kayak. First impression is that the VR125 is one sexy reel! I bought the silver/stainless steel, and I just like looking at it. It comes with detailed instructions on how to convert to bailless. Like most higher end reels it comes with a reel bag, this one is lined with velvet? The reel is much larger and a little heavier than I had imagined. I would compare it to a Shimano 4000 in size. It comes with the bail installed and it has the thickest bail compared to my other reels. The bail works smoothly, so despite the extra bulk I do not think it will be difficult to use. The handle has a round ball type grip. It is comfortable but lacking in style points. It cranks smoothly, but not as easily as my Stradics. I am going to pair it initially with a g loomis pro blue 7 footer but will likely buy a longer more conventional surf rod and put it on that. I will post again on this reel after I work it over. I gave it 4 stars for for initial impression only. May change depending on how good of a tool it is.
ProsOne sexy reel! Very strong, hopefully will take a lot of abuse.
ConsPricy. Initially not as smooth as Shimanos.

Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Snook and King Mackerel have been no problem for my VR 200 from the jetties here in South Texas. I can throw small plugs or big jigs a long way.
ProsSuper light weight. Huge line capacity. Smooth as silk. Looks that kill.
ConsPeople want to talk about it, while I'm trying to fish!

Very solid and durable.. It is built like a tank... How ever it is not smooth like some of the top shimano reels,,, but it does finish the job very well.. I feel like this reel is built to last forever... and it probably does.... Well worth of money... Spool size is pretty good.. I ve put "power pro 80lb" for 300 yard and no problem..

Built to last
I work in manufacturing and I really appreciate the build quality of this reel. Every piece is machined beautifully with precision and it's hard not to keep looking at it. I fished with it a few times on the boat and handled everything I threw at it. There seem to be a little back play on the handle that bothers me a bit, but it did not affect performance. Make sure to wash off any salt and get it serviced once a year. Highly recommended.
ProsBuild quality, great drag, light

Absolutely perfect for me
I live 5 1/2 hours from the Atlantic beach that I fish so I am an enthusiast at best when it comes to surf fishing. I have however been surf fishing two or three time a year for 10 years. I read all of the blogs and I have always wanted a bailess, waterproof reel, but the idea of buying an expensive piece of equipment that I may not use very often and a piece of equipment that is so different from what i use on a regular basis on my home waters was daunting. The Van Staal VR 150 was designed for me. If the bailess configuration proves to be more than I can master, I can always use it as a bailed reel. The price point is reasonable when compared to comparable models and the reel is built to be serviced at home. I have owned this reel for about two weeks. I haven't fished with it yet, but I have cast it many times mounted on my Tsunami 9'6" Airwave in a local field and I am impressed. in the past, I've caught enough fish in the surf to know that I made the right choice, and I spent my money wisely on this exceptional piece of equipment. It's beautiful. It's versatile. It is worth the money.

VR200 beach snook killer
Bought a VR200 last week , spooled it with momoi diamond braid 50 lb. this thing will cast a mile, smooth retrieve. Mounted on a Shimano Tiralejo 1st generation 9ft one piece surf rod. The smoothness of this reel is unreal. incredibly lite for it's size. will also be used for salmon up north. Can't wait for the extra spools to become available.
Proslite, smooth, perfect speed

One of my favorite reels
Paired with a 9' Mojo surf, this setup is unstoppable in the back bays. I've used it from the east coast all the way to the ripping waters of the mediterranean. It has proven a worthy competitor to several of the other sealed reels.

So far so good
I just got this reel a few weeks ago and so far it has been aces. The drag is smooth and I love the fact that it is sealed and I don't have to worry about it getting dunked. It's lighter in weight than other similar reels.
ProsLight weight Sealed Excellent drag system
ConsNone so far

Awsesome, smooth reel
The drag is incredibly smooth. Very light reel that is the perfect fit for my 7 1/2 foot Avid Inshore rod.

This reel is very well built. Van Staal did a great job. I live on the Florida gulf coast and use this reel on the pier, boat, and beach. I've caught pompano in the surf, King Mackeral off of the pier, and Amberjack off of the boat. This reel has proven itself for every application I use it for.
ProsWell built, easy to service, very lite

Van Staal VR 200
I got a chance today to test my new reel at Mystic Lake in Arlington, MA today (2/1/16) and very HAPYY with the reel. The VR 200 reel is very light, easy to hold & casts like a dream. I had no problem casting a two ounce lure 400 feet. Can't wait to go Surf Fishing with my new Van Staal reel and Century rod at the Cape Cod Canal in May 2016. The VR200 reel is worth the money!
ProsI like the idea that I can service this reel by myself. I have already practiced taking the reel apart several times. Stripers online has a video on YouTube about these reels.
ConsI would like to have a back up spool for my reel. Unfortunately there are no extra spools available for sale at this time.

Will these be available in right hand retrieve? And how many yards of 40lb braid can this reel hold?
This reel will hold roughly 350 yards of 40lb braid, depending on the brand and thickness of the line. As far as right hand retrieve I do not believe that Van Staal has any plans for a lefty model any time soon.
