Offshore beast

I have 2 of these reels on custom 8ft rods. Primarily used for sight fishing while offshore trolling. Cast at a weed mat or see a lot of birds etc. Cast a big chugger, zip, zip boom fish on! And an unbelievable catch at that...a wahoo! Peeled off maybe 200yds, 65lb suf832 braid. And wahoo can hit ur bait at over 60mph. It was a blast and tasted great!

A workhorse of a reel and very smooth. Love that it’s sealed but not a big fan of weight, way heavier than my Clash
ProsSmooth, good drag, cool looking

Im a shimano guy but...

This reel is an absolute monster for the price vs it’s competitors. The amount of drag on this thing is enough to rip the rod out of your hand given big enough fish is on.

This is possibly one of the best Penn reels for price/performance ratio in the mid-upper range

True this is the Saltwater Fishes Slammer !!
April 9, 2019
Heavy duty spinning reel for larger species, almost water proof (IPX6 Sealed body and spool design)
The winner for the best new product at iCast in the category of “Best Saltwater Reelâ€.since 2016 !
Slammer III is the first spinning reel to offer the Dura-Drag material. Dura-Drag is a proprietary material that is even stronger than the HT-100 keyed carbon washers that you find in the Slammer Drag on the Penn Spinfisher V reels.

Best reel I've used to surf fish with over saltist and Saragossa . So smooth and built very well. Watch video of comparison of slammer 3 vs Saragossa or saltist. And I'm a Diawa man

Best spinning reel for heavy salt and strong drag system. I've used many penn and other companies reels and by far my favorite. Put a 4500 slammer on an 8' star stellar surf 1pc rod n enjoy. I've got 9-11 ft rods but prefer this setup over any. Love the slammer III 4500.
ProsAll is great

Really tough for the money!

I bought a 3500 model and paired it with a Calico Jack 8’ MH stick and 20lb PP line. The reel is overkill for most inshore fishing unless you are targeting large stripers, bull redfish, large tarpon, or possibly sharks. That being said, it is a heavy reel for a 3500 size, but it’s built like a tank and offers a really heavy drag for this size reel. The only downside is the 220 yard of 20lb braid if you are looking for a light tackle option for tuna or possibly sailfish, especially on a regular basis. I can throw a Mirrodine XXL a confirmed 67 yards though, and it’s quite smooth to boot. Yes, a Van Staal VS can hold twice the line and weigh less...but it also costs 4x more. All that being said, every reel is a compromise. I Spinnfisher V 3500’s as well as larger offerings from Penn. When I want to throw larger lures to 30lb+ fish and I don’t have to worry about them running deep, this is my “go to†rig. Well built, well supported, great price point, and looks good to boot.
ProsGreat drag We?ll supported by Penn Great price point for this type of gear Sealed system
ConsLittle heavy for this line capacity

I'm interested in purchasing the penn slammer 3 4500, is the one you are selling the upgraded version with 8 ball bearings or the older one with the 7, the upgrade to the eight was a ball bearing added to the line roller guide, and according to some posts, this reel had some quality control issues before upgrade, don't want to have issues, also, was interested in purchasing the 9' st croix mojo surf rod medium weight, moderate action lure weight 3/4 to 4 oz, you did not have in stock when I was there less than a week ago, will not buy online, want to see both and feel, want to match this reel with this rod for throwing bucktails and plugs for surf
1 Answer
We do not have any old inventory here so I am guessing it's the newer one.

what rod do you recommend for the slammer 3 4500 i fish from the bank and need to be able to throw 2-3oz
1 Answer
The St Croix AVSS80MMF Avid Series Surf Spinning Rod would be a great match for the Penn Slammer 4500. The two would balance out well together. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.
