A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.

More Features:
  • New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
  • 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
  • Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
  • Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
  • Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
  • Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes

I have researched saltwater spinning reels in detail.
When I came upon the 6500 bail less by Penn, there was no further searching. I'm skeptical of other's comments, but there were so many 5 *s, I thought I'd give it a try. Best thing I did. We live in Bonita Springs, Fl. most of the year. This reel is so great. The bail less is the greatest. I took a few casts to familiarize my self with, the technique. But boy it is effortless. What's the first thing to break on a traditional spinning reel? The bail spring, right? Well at least for me. No Bail, no spring .No problem. Highly recommend the bail less model..

Great, but...
March 29, 2020
Itā€™s a solid reel with quality parts. I do have one complaint with the live line feature. I was hoping that the live sardine could swim out using the bottom drag. I was using 50lb braid and with the complete free setting the sardine was not able to do so. I had to open the bail for the sardine to swim out. I did still caught a few yellow fin tuna but it didnā€™t work the way I expected it work. I had no problem reeled in the tunas thou.
ProsSolid reel with quality components
ConsLive liner feature didn?t work as expected.

Had the opportunity to use the 5500 series reel fighting 100+ pound tarpon and it held up great. Perfect size for the job. Also used for stripers off the Jersey shore and has held up great through the years.

Best chunk/live bait fishing reel EVER!
March 23, 2020
I fish for Rock Fish (aka Striped Bass) in the Chesapeake Bay and have great success using the Penn Spinfisher 4500LL. The "LL" stands for live lining and means I can set my baits out, flip the live liner switch and sit back waiting for the line to scream off the reel. As soon as you turn the reel handle once, the drag kicks in to where you have it set and you fight the fish. no more adjusting the drag when there's a fish on the line, means more fish in the boat!

I hate the bail-less
February 5, 2020
I thought that it was a cool idea so I had gotten the bail-less model. I've got to tell you, I wish I could change that decision. The reel itself is a very good quality. It stood up to a decent stingray, and hasn't tarnished at all since my saltwater trip. The problem comes when I'm casting. At times the line will find it way into the arm and snap the cast short. My motto for the trip had become "son of a bail-less b****" whenever it snapped the cast short.
Prosgood quality Smooth drag Smooth reeling
Conscasting with the bail-less model is very fraustrating

6500LL is a beast!

Very powerful reel, can wrestle any critter out of the ocean I'm sure. LL feature is cool, works better off a pier than in rough surf.

Decent pier reel

Itā€™s a pretty good reel for pier fishing for stripers, croaker and bluefish. Iā€™ve also handled some pretty big rays and it did a nice job. Itā€™s super easy to self service too.

Solid, tough, all Penn
July 14, 2019
Iā€™ve got my 6500BLS mounted on a 7ā€™ Allegiance II heavy rod with 40lb braid. Although this reel is typically used for surf fishing, it really works well when throwing heavy lures from a boat. Having the bail trip when slinging a 2-5oz lure can get pretty expensive when they fly 100 yards after breaking off. The bailless design takes a little getting used to, but when you do, itā€™s great. This reel is solid! For jack Crevalle, Bonita, Mahi-mahi, and even red snapper, itā€™s really a workhorse, especially for the price!
ProsTough and excellent value!
ConsSlightly heavy, but really not much of a con when you consider the durability

SSV 6500 LL

The 6500 LL version of the Spinfisher is a good size for the boat/beach combo. I can plug the jetty for hours and also launch lures from the beach. The weight is a bit heavy but not so much that it wears you out after hours of casting and retrieving. The 39" retrieve is respectable and very smooth. Take care of your Penn gear with basic maintenance.

I got a new Spinfisher 6500LL because it was on clearance and the live line feature is great. I use it in place of my old 7500SS but that reel in still in service.

Side note --- Penn offers overhaul/cleaning/lubrication services for pretty cheap. Check local shops as some of them are authorized Penn service centers.

Fisherman's HQ in Ship Bottom, NJ can usually fix a wide scope of Penn reels. Maintenance helps the reel last long and stay in fighting shape. I have an old 7500SS that is 20 years old and performs like it's brand new.

Love the 3500 ā€œVā€ reel. Guess I must have a dozen or so. Recently bought the new 3500 ā€œSSVIā€ reel. The 3500 ā€œVIā€ is the same size as the 4500 ā€œVā€. Would much rather have the 3500 ā€œSSVā€ than the 3500 ā€œSSVIā€ reel. Wonder if the 2500 ā€œSSVIā€ is the same as the 3500 ā€œSSVā€?

Amazing reel for the value

I bought these as an upgrade for older model Penn Spinfishers. The difference compared to the old reels is amazing. The level line feature is incredible for stripers. I would recommend these to anyone.

What would be the best rod for this reel 250$ or under? Preferably under 6 1/2 feet or under. Will consider 7ft. Looking for a fast action rod.

The Shimano Trevala 6'6'' jigging rods would be good to match with the Penn Spinfisher SSV 4500LL.

What is the LL??
1 Answers
LL Stands for "Live Liner". The Live Liner is a feature that allows you to fish very light drag (almost free spool) with a closed bail. You then engage the drag by simply turning the handle. This is most commonly used when bait fishing and you want to allow the fish to eat the bait without feeling resistance.
