Every time your fishing line gets a twist in it between the rod and the lure or the rod and the fish you are catching, it weakens. If the twists are few, the weakening is negligible, but as the number of twists in the line increase, the weakening becomes increasingly more substantial. Eventually the line will break easily and unexpectedly.

One solution to the problem is to install a ball bearing swivel between the rod tip and the lure or hook at the end of the line. As the lure or fish on the end of the line spins, the swivel will allow the line to rotate and maintain its strength. These Sampo ball bearing swivels are cast with stainless steel to prevent rust and corrosion from obstructing the motion of the device.

Sampo are still the best made ball bearing swivels out there. A bit on the pricey side, but when you are fighting the fish of a lifetime, you will be glad you spent the extra pennies. Stock up. Make sure you have the right size for when you need it.

These swivels are the best I've ever used. Period. I've been using them tarpon fishing in the Gulf for years and I've NEVER had one fail. They seem to last forever as long as you rinse them. I even repaint them black after the finish wears off. Cost more but worth it.
