Built to provide high end performance and dependability in a compact lightweight frame, the Shimano SpeedMaster II Lever Drag Reel is an absolute fish fighting machine. These two-speed lever drag reels feature the same sleek and functional design coupled with unrelenting power that blue water anglers have come to expect from Shimano conventional reels, but now at a price that everyone can appreciate. The rigid Hagane Body prevents the misalignment of moving parts under the heaviest of loads, giving the SpeedMaster II the strength to handle anything from tough pelagic species, to bottom dwelling heavy weights. Whether you are trolling, chunking, live-lining or jigging, the SpeedMaster II has the wide adjustable drag and high torque power you can rely on to come out on top. Included is a spare drag lever for adjusting the drag curve for optimal use with monofilament lines, giving the SpeedMaster II a less aggressive drag curve that is ideal for targeting sailfish and white marlin.

Excellent Reel and even a more excellent price! Can't wait to use it! Going to get a couple more! Heavier, and slower in winding speed than the Talica IIs
ProsExcellent reel, great construction, great drag!
ConsA tad heavier in weight and slower in winding speed, than their Talica II cousins!

Budget worthy 2 speed lever drag

Excellent reel, well built extremly high end fit and finish for cost. I will definately buy more of these when my other reels age out. A great deal of drag @ 40lb for a small reel is what most look for when battling 20-100lb gamefish and this reel fits that purpose. Holds 500yd of 50lb spectra and the reel speed on cast is as smooth as butter.

Used this reel my trip to Guadalupe Island Mexico for 50-60lbs yellowfin tuna, worked great and very comfy. Its comparable to my tallica or penn Squall 20. I'd definitely buy another.

Lots of power at this price

Tried offshore last weekend, the reel is impressive, handle several 40-pounders with ease. The handle is very grip friendly. It basically has most of the bells and whistles of the higher end ones but at half the price. Also get the other model for inshore. I already had two trips reel still feel like new.
ProsPowerful drag, fast and smooth cranking and easy to handle
ConsSo far so good after two trips, one inshore one offshore

Everything seems to be good quality with the exception of the strap/clamp that is a secondary hold down on the reel seat.

Was thinking of pairing my 16II with a Star Rods DLX35H. targeting big reds, tarpon, snook and grouper. would it work?
1 Answer
Anthony, yes that would pair up really well with either the 12II or 16II. Essentially the same reel with a narrower spool on the 12. Jump up to the 16II if you require the additional line capacity.
