Itchy trigger finger?... Problem solved!
May 21, 2020
Bought the whole set! Was glad to see Shimano was still producing these spinning reels with the Quickfire II trigger release. I got a set of Shimano TX reels with the original Quickfire triggers when I was a kid and fell in love with them. The Spirex series is a very nice upgrade from the discontinued TX models.

weak stem broken reels
May 19, 2019
I own 7 reels from shimano 3 are broken 1 is just wore out. i have always loved the quick fire.L astt yr i bought a syncpate only to have its stem snap while landing a 2 lb bass. ok so i replaced it. and it happened again. my next replacement was not shimano. until i see a more sturdy stem i will not waste my money again. these clearly have no strength. both were less than 3 lbs. shimano i hope you see this and correct ill miss the quickfire

Had my 4000 real drag for years. Thing still works like it's new. Used for catching pike and smallmouth in Ontario Canada.
ProsBail trigger, available rear drag

Great "BUT"
September 28, 2018
I have been using these for years because of the "quick fire". I feel I get about 20% more cast in a day and that accounts for more fish. It is a good reel for the price.

Now for the "BUT" part. The frames arm, from the reel to the rod seat, on the 1000 & 2500 class are weak and will twist back and forth on large fish. We have broken several of them on larger fish and they will twist and flex back and forth as you try and reel in a larger fish. Just caught 20# King Salmon on a 2500 and thought for sure the reel armature was going to snap off the way it was twisting back and forth. FYI, I was fishing for 5-9# Coho's at the time so I had the correct size reel. Still they need to beef up the arm between the reel ans rod seat.
ProsBest "Quick Fire" available 20% more cast
ConsWEAK, WEAK, WEAK frame.

Great Trout Reel
October 26, 2015
This is the best trout reel I've ever used. It's smooth, reliable, and built like more expensive reels. I use mine mostly for trout in rivers. The biggest I've caught so far was a 5 1/2 pound brown. This reel is bigger than most people use for trout, but I like that. The fighting drag is great. It lets me keep the drag a little on the loose side so teh fish doesn't jerk my rod around a lot, but I can quickly and dependably tighten the drag if I need to stop a run before the fish wraps around something. I like the rear drag a lot better than front drag. I can adjust it in mid-fight if needed without risking touching the line.
I use 8 pound Magnathin line on mine.
I like it so much I bought an extra so I won't have to cry too much when I wear this one out, which looks like it won't be any time soon.
ProsFighting drag is great. Bearings very smooth
ConsQuickfire lever and bail arm wore to the point of occasional malfunction after 4 years of heavy use, but those parts are about $4 total here:

Great Pin Fish Reel
November 3, 2013
I needed a small light weight reel for bait fishing in the grass flats. This reel hits the mark. the single hand casting feature is great. I paired this reel with a shimano convergence rod. I really enjoy the light weight of the combination. i would recommend this bait fishing combo. Thanks Tackle Direct for the great pricing.
ProsLight Weight, Single Handed Operation, Very smooth reel.
ConsNone so far.

Is this reel "ok" for salt water? Can it handle a 20 pound red fish?
1 Answers
It is "OK" for saltwater as long as you rinse it very well after each use. A #20 redfish would put that reel to the test. We would suggest going with a 3500 or 4000 sized reel such as the Penn Battle, Shimano Sahara, or Quantum Blu 30.
