Definately a masterpiece of engineering & product design. The finest reel I have ever owned. Machining is exceptional; surfaces are finely finished.
Extremely smooth operation, I can see all of my friends begging to try it. I own & have fished 3 Stella's and they are very smooth too, but the VanStall had me smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Really, really 'ROCKSOLID'
The price is money very, very, very well spent.
Pros
  • Very light, extemely smooth operation,
  • Rock solid feel, machining & finish are superb.
  • This reel has to be 'best in class'.

I love how this balances with my 11ft 3/4-4oz ODM Genesis gen1. I've fished it a few times and seems to be very solid. I've fished a zeebass x25 reel for the past 8 years and I'm really happy to have another reliable option in my arsenal.

The build quality is excellent, nice handle that makes cranking easy, the drag is easy to adjust on the fly,I like the manual bail which prevents the unwanted flips.300 yards of 30 braid fits perfect on spool,i use on kayak which is scary given the price, it would be nice if it floated but will see how the waterproofing is over time
Pros
  • Waterproof
Cons
  • Expensive

I own three of the gen 1 with different spare spools. I never had any issues with what the upgraded gen 2 was referring to but oh well, free spools are always welcomed with any purchase. I would recommend any of these reels to avid surf fisherman.
Pros
  • Its the best of the best for the surf fishing world.
Cons
  • No lie here. Its pricey but after destroying multiple high end reels because of the surf, the price of 1 Van Staal is justified.

Man this reel has been dunked, splashed, dropped in the sand, and swam with. It's maintained the same feel it had out of the box for sever fishing trips thus far. Couldn't be happier.
