The Van Staal X-Series Reels are based on the same foundation that made Van Staal legendary for power and durability.  A completely sealed and waterproof reel machined out of aeronautics grade 6061-T6 aluminum, with a solid titanium shaft, hardened stainless steel main gear and pinion, and patented waterproof sealed drag.  The Van Staal VS and VSB Reels are designed for a lifetime of fishing.  The New X-Series reels now have the X-Wrap oscillation system that lays the line completely flat, designed to cast further and allow for greater drag pressures when using braided line.  The drag system has also been improved allowing for greater drag range.

  • Fully-machined and sealed waterproof aluminum body
  • Sealed waterproof drag system
  • MicroClick drag tuning accuracy
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel spiral-bevel main gear
  • Titanium-nitride treated center shaft
  • Titanium-nitride line roller

the vsx is definitely worth the money. you get a fully sealed reel that can be buried in sand and still works, you can even reel while it's fully submerged. very nice reel for the surfcaster

I’ve been fishing it from the surf and pier and I have zero complaints! My VSX250 holds plenty of line and pairs well with my rods. It’s a beast!

Second to none

I fish on LI. From the pounding open beach to the lighthouse in Montauk. This reel is the only reel I trust. Yea it's not the smoothest reel on the market (because it has seals) but it's a friggin tank. There is a reason that dam near every North East surf fisherman owns on or two... Salty dunks, crunching sand from massive surf, drops and rocks this reel just keeps preforming. It was designed to take abuse that us surf fisherman put it through. All these people bashing the reel for (wahhhh, it's not smoothe, wahhhhhh it costs a lot, wahhhh you have to buy a power knob, wahhhh it's not made in the USA anymore) the reel was not meant for casual pier fishing. It was literally designed to take a beating in the surf and to just plain work. And as for outsourcing to China that is simply for production cost. 98% of everything is made in china. Don't let the fact that it's made overseas make you think anything less. You want a solid fishing tool, this is the best.
ProsSolid, dependable, looks, performance, self serviceable

This reel, though it is priced very high, is second to none for serious surfcasters. It will never show wear and will not be the reason for a lost fish. ever. The bailess feature takes about an hour to get used to, but once you do, its super easy and smooth. I recommend buying a power knob for a more comfortable grip.

When I moved to Florida and started fishing the piers, I used to wonder why so many people had these expensive reels. I own 3 now. Enough said, once you fish a Staal you'll understand.
ProsBullet proof, Strong drag, 100% sealed
ConsSlower gear ratio, slightly heavy

ConsReel handle is to small and mine has a weird noise when reeling in one spot. Sent back to Van Staal for repair and still has noise.

Best fir Baja
November 14, 2018
These Van Staal reels are the very best for central Baja surf casting. Unless you have fished there, you can't imagine how rough Baja is on gear. My Penns, although I've loved them all, don't last more than 6 months at most before they rot and fall apart. The Van Staal reel is bullet proof, seriously. As far as the price, I'll never need another reel, so I guess if you spread the price out over the same time frame that I would have bought 10 other reels, then its a great deal. Took me a long time to pull the trigger on my first VS, but I couldn't be happier. They are by far the very best reels if you need durability and dependability in extreme conditions.
ProsCan handle any rough conditions
ConsEveryone wants to borrow mine!

Definitely not worth the money

Ok, so for one it's not even close to being considered smooth. It makes noise on retrieve and even when free spinning at home. It's way too tight of a retrieve. The factory handle knob absolutely will drive you insane and force you to buy an upgraded or aftermarket handle knob. This reel is NOT made in the USA, I dont care what anyone tells you, they are made in china now, says right on the reel stem MADE IN CHINA. Yeah it looks nice and its watertight, so what?!.... For a reel that's designed to cast lures all day you would expect something smooth to not exhaust you after 100+ casts. And don't get me started on the drag, it advertises at over 30lbs, I pretty much lock it down and drag gets pulled by small fish, you can get 35lbs of drag from a $199 Cabo that's alot stronger and smoother. Traded mine up, got a new Daiwa Satist BJ4000, people make mistakes, I did buying a vsx150, but now I'm a recoverd idiot-oholic. Unless you're fishing specifically for bluefish and stripers up north dont waste your money.
ProsIt looks good Its water tight
ConsDrag is not as stated The retrieve is extremely rough Handle knob is bluegill sized for a "saltwater reel" Made in China Line roller hissing from the factory line Overpriced

What would be best length rod and lure weight for this reel

A 10 foot or a 11 foot surf rod with a lure rating of 1-4 oz would be a good pairing for the vs200xp

Van Staal does not make the VSX models in R/H retrieve. We just carry the older VS 150 models in R/H retrieve.
