Great reel for the price
December 31, 2016
A reel that can easily fit into anyone's budget whether you are an avid angler or a beginner. This reel will hold plenty of 17 to 20 lb monofilament (300yds or more) along with a couple wraps of shock leader. It has a very distinct and loud clicker which is important when your rod is among a bunch of other fishermen. The coating on the aluminum feels great and is very durable. The star drag is perfect for bringing in big fish. The casting ability is easy, but the reel can be very fast and not controllable depending on the color brakes that you use and adjusting the spool tensioner. I have dialed mine in with no issues affecting my casting ability.
ProsAffordable compared to other $200+ reels Loud clicker Plenty of drag Great color and coatings
ConsNot a real con, but can be uncontrollable if you are not careful with your settings, for example, casting into the wind.

diawa saltist super high speed
April 2, 2016
this is a great reel I matched it up with a phenix black diamond rod that I built, and I use it as my jigging stick. the diawa casts real smooth and retrieves with the speed needed to get the big fishes attention its a great reel and I will definitely be buying more, and tackle direct is where I get all my reals. good prices and promt service.

Great for bottom fishing
February 8, 2016
I have had this reel for about 2 years now, and i have to say, its an amazing reel. the high gear ratio help to bring my line in quickly and the line cap is great ( i use 30lb test). this reel is also super smoth and has a great drag that is both smooth and powerful. All in all, it is a great reel.

Can't say enough

Great reel for the money. I use this reel for light duty trolling, bottom fishing, drifting and kite fishing. This reel for me does it all. I have 2 at the moment and plan on switching out all my reels to this reel in the 50 and 40 models.

Great Reels For Texas Surf
May 17, 2015
I've got six of these. Two 50s, two 30s and two 20s. They are mounted on 12', 13' and 10' rods respectively. The 50s are great for throwing 8 & bait for big larger sharks. The 30s are perfect for bull reds, jacks and medium sharks. The 20s are for specks, pops and Spanish macs. Loaded with PowerPro I can cast them all at least 100 yards. Last year I pulled in a couple of bull sharks in the 6 to 7 foot range with the 50s. I can't even begin to count how many bull reds I landed with the 30s. The 20s are great for sight casting heavy spoons to schools of Jacks cruising down the beach or soaking finger mullet for whatever come along. I highly recommend these reels.
ProsGreat surf casting, easy to maintain/clean, very loud clicker
ConsBlack and gold color is sort of dated buy who really cares as long as it gets the job done.

Why rods would you recommend for the size 40 daiwa saltist? I'd be using it from a boat to flatline/slow troll for kingfish.
The Shimano Teramar West Coast Inshore Conventional Trolling Rods would pair well with Daiwa Saltist 40 for the type of fishing you will be doing.

Is this reel made for casting, or for trolling? I've used conventional reels in the surf for many years, and while some reels say they are for casting (Penn Jigmaster) they often aren't really suited for it. Does this have magnetic spool control when casting?
This reel can be used for casting or trolling. Unfortunately, it does not have a magnetic cast control. If you are looking for a reel with that feature, I would check out Avet reels.
