The Shimano Aero Technium XSC features Shimano X-Ship gearing for smoothness and efficiency. This reel also features super slow oscillation for outstanding line lay and propulsion line management system for great castability. This is the ultimate surf casting reel with Aero Wrapp II, Instant Drag, and CF Gear technologies.

  • X-Ship: Positioning the pinion gear close to the center line of the large diameter drive gear, more power is transferred from the handle to the rotor, the pinion gear is supported by 2 Shimano A-RB roller bearings to create more stability
  • Aero Wrap II: is a worm gear oscillation system with specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides great uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast

New Surf Reel

Received the reel timely and in good condition. Upon opening the box and examining the reel, it is light in weight and very smooth operation. The handle is well made but the knob is lacking for a reel in this price range. My 8000D Bait Runner has a much heavier duty knob for half the price and much needed when you are pulling in that large catch through the surf. I fish a lot along the Baja California coast and you never know what is going to end up on the end of your line. I purchased this reel for the longer casting ability advertised but I have not yet tried it out, not even in my local waters of So. Cal.. Heading down to Baja in February and will give it a workout then. For now the reel feels good but the knob is lacking, Shimano needs to update this to make it a true large surf reel. I will review again after I have a chance to give it some use.
ProsLighter than my 8000D Bait Runner. Super slow wind on the spool you can hardly see it move up and down, 50 up and 50 down for one complete cycle of the spool.
ConsKnob is under sized for this reel.

very nice quality reel, BUT SHIMANO needs to improve the handle. It needs a power knob on it ,ether a ball or football type.

Used many times no problems but I don't notice any significant casting performance over my VS 300 - much easier to re-spool though.
ProsSmooth - re-spooling made easy

How waterproof is this reel? Can it handle the underwater abuse like a van staal?
Anthony, This reel is not completely sealed like the Van Staal, it does have some resistance to water intrusion protection. If you are planing on swimming or submerging the reel I would recommend the Van Staal.

I heard the frame and the spool (?) might be made of magnesium. How does it compare to aluminum in regards to wear and longevity? Better or worst? What say you?
We believe you are confusing two totally different reels. The Aero Technium is a long distance spinning reel designed for saltwater use. None of the parts are Magnesium. They are light weight aluminum and are fine in saltwater. The Metanium bait casting reel is designed exclusively for freshwater. Its body and some internal parts are Magnesium to cut down on weight. Magnesium will corrode and dissolve if it come into contact with Saltwater.

I assume this reel is good for 270yds on the field and 180+ with bait. Say so. In the UK, 150yds with bait is for tyros. Rgds. Malcolm Hayward
Hello Malcolm. Depending on the pound test line you use, this reel should be absolutely perfect for what you will need it for. It has plenty of capacity to reach the distances you require. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

Lets be real here , despite this reels outstanding distance capability the distances you mention above are way out of the range for the overwhelming majority of surfcaster's. Just owning a reel with incredible capability doesn't equate to an angler being able to utilize and get everything out of what the reels capable of , it takes many years of practice and discipline to become a great caster. In other words , a mediocre caster will not turn into a great caster with this reel but a great caster will definitely increase his distance if he currently is using a reel of lesser potential . Hope this helps

Greetings. I use an Aerlex GT 8000. A competent fishing reel but too small on the tournament court. (Tops out at circa190yards). My Mitchel 498 requires a freshly hand laid spool for each competitive cast. (Nonsense). Will the 10000 XS out cast the venerable Mitchel? The Mitchel has gone over 260yards. The Millionmax was just too expensive. The drag only needs to lock for casting. Smooth, strong, progressive drags are irrelevant for UK beach fishing with a 15ft back caster. Rgds. Malcolm
Let me start by saying no one here has experience with Tournament casting. However, after researching the reels you have mentioned, if they have not been modified, the Aero Technium should definitely cast further. The design of the spool and line lay will allow for faster and friction free movement of the line off of the spool. Hope this helps.

Size comparison to Stella, max Drag & line capacity braid. Thanks
The Stella and the Aero Technium are both extremely well made reels. However, they are made for different applications. The Stella is designed more for use as a boat reel where the Aero Technium is specifically designed for the surf and distance casting. Shimano has not released specs for braid capacity or drag on the Aero Technium. The Stella 10000 is rated at 55# of drag and has braid ratings of; 50/360, 65/290, and 80/215.
