Quality reel for the Boat or Pier
September 17, 2014
I purchased the 6000FB, this reel will serve you well if you fish a boat or pier. Not for the surf. In the surf I get wet all the time, occasionally a big wave submerges the reel, or I'll slip and fall in.
Pros:The Good: Good bail spring, I have not lost one lure due to premature bail flip. Paired with fireline this reel has subdued many stripers. Drag is very good. I would pay an additional $50 if Shimano made it with ceramic bearings. Shimano and other manufacturers need to read the forums and realize there's a huge gap in the market for reels that can be dunked and not seize for less than $700.
To be clear, I bought this reel for surf fishing, and was under the impression that saltwater reels could be dunked and still remain operational. My sw fly reels are still ticking after 15 years. Now I know, unless the spinning reel is sealed, the bearings will fail once exposed to saltwater. I fish Rhode Island at night about 3-4 times a week and it lasted less than four months before it got submerged. I cleaned it but the bearings were toast in two weeks.
