Legend 3/4-4 10'6" Surf Rod
I have been surf fishing since 1958. This is the finest surf rod I have owned and fished. The 70/30 split makes it cast like a one piece rod. It loads quickly and easily and will really launch your plugs or lures. It is designed to let the rod do the work and you may need to get used to the casting style. Overpowering the rod will work against you. It has plenty of backbone for landing large fish. It is that rare rod that both a great caster and a great fish fighter. Coupled with St Croix's limited life time warranty, this is a rod you will fish for the rest of your life. I highly recommend a Legend. Greg
ProsLight weight, strong, very well designed. 70/30 split makes it cast like a one piece rod. Top of the line matterials.
Cons70/30 split can make it challenging to store and transport.

Awesome factory built rod
I tried one of the factory built 10'6" rods, LS106MM2, rated at 3/4-4 oz on a recent surf fishing expedition. I was blown away by it's casting ability. It outcast a custom rod that was built with a blank from a quality manufacturer. I am surf fishing 55 years and know that this was no fluke (no pun intended). I bought one from TD and a few days later it proved itself as a great fishing tool. I was able to reach the stripers on the outside of the bar and put some bass on the beach as others fishing with me could not reach them with their rods. This rod also proved to be a good fish fighter and the ability to cast different weight lures efficiently.
ProsCasting distance - ease of casting - ability to cast 95% of the lures I use for bass fishing from the beach - quality parts used by St Croix.

One of the best for Plugging for Bass
I bought the 10'6 Medium 3/4 to 4oz. It is one of my favorite rods for the NJ Surf. Most guys I know have the Mojo's which are great but if you want a better quality reelseat and sturdy grips the Legend is the way to go. Sweet Spot for casting is around 1.5 to 2.5 oz depending on the conditions and what you are throwing. I was using this rod all day throwing metal at around 3 to 4oz and the rod performed beautifully when you let the rod load up. For 100 bucks less than the Centuries and CTS rods it is the best rod out there at the best Price.
ProsDurable Quality Casts Great Great taper making it effortless to set hooks
ConsDifficulty to get use to throwing bombers and small stuff but you get use to it after awhile.

What are the braid line ratings for the 7, 8 and 9' rods?
There is no recommended braid rating for these rods, but I own the 9' and recommend 20-40lb for it. The smaller two I recommend staying in the 20-30lb range.

Do the rods break down into equal length pieces? i.e. A 9' rod turns into two 4.5' pieces or. 12' becomes two 6' pieces If not, what are the largest pieces for each rod? Also, I'm looking for a large surf rod in the smallest possible package, once broken down. What one would you recommend (doesn't have to be this model/brand). Thanks.
These rods have a 70/30 split with the guide section being the long end. So if it was a ten foot rod it would be a 7ft and 3ft split. The St. Croix Mojos are a similar rod and they break down as a 50/50 split.

Can you tell me which shimano ultegra reel will balance the 12 ' legend surf rod. The Ci4 or aero tech. I know the ci4 only comes in the 5500 size and aero in 10000 size. I want to keep weight down so if the 5500 will balance the rod I would go with it. By balance, I mean when I hold the rod at 45 degrees it keep the rod tip up. Thanks
Hello Robert. The Aero Technium would better balance your 12 foot rod. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!
