Lever Drag
Freespool or the perfectly dialed-in strike drag. With Shimano's lever drag reels -- including Tiagra and all Shimano TLD reels -- you won't make a mistake. Whether you need to back off quickly when a marlin starts its surface dance, or full drag pressure when a tuna goes deep and circles, you can rely on Shimano's lever drag to do the job.
2-Speed Gearing
Shimano knows gears, and all about shifting. Relying on their expertise in bicycle components, the two-speed gearing system in Shimano's Tiagra and TLD reels is unmatched. The shifting mechanism is designed so that gearing changes are quick and easy -- even while fighting a fish. The low gear ratio (for high power retrieves) is selected by pushing the button on the base of the handle. Return to the high speed ratio by sliding the release button along the handle. The pinion and drive gears are always engaged -- there's no gear meshing during the shift.
Hydrothermal® Drag
In any big-game reel, the heat build-up in the drag system caused by a hard-running fish will change the original drag setting. Our Hydrothermal Drag System, with its exclusive oil-filled piston, brings the drag pressure up to within 90% of the original setting. As the drag temperature increases, heat is conducted through the spool where it warms the special oil-filled piston. The piston expands to apply additional pressure against the drag plate -- compensating for the decrease in drag pressure. Shimano uses graphite drag washers to provide the Tiagra reels with a wide range of drag settings and low start-up inertia.
