You don't need a big boat to catch big fish. In fact, there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't catch a 250-pound thresher shark from your 20-foot center console boat. Unless you left your Shimano TLD at home. If you own a small fishing boat, or you often find yourself elbow-to-elbow with your angling compatriots on the large party boats, you need a reel that's both nimble and versatile. The Shimano TLD reels are light in hand, so easy to shift they're almost mindless, and they're adaptable to any number of bluewater species from tuna to striped marlin. And because they're built by Shimano, durability is an inevitable part of the package. A large, private, ocean-going vessel may be neat, but it's not necessary. Just match the tackle to the situation. And let the fish fall where they may.
Lever Drag
Freespool or the perfectly dialed-in strike drag. With Shimano's lever drag reels - including Tiagra and all Shimano TLD reels - you won't make a mistake. Whether you need to back off quickly when a marlin starts its surface dance, or full drag pressure when a tuna goes deep and circles, you can rely on Shimano's lever drag to do the job.

Shimano TLD features:
  • Graphite Frame
  • Graphite Sideplate
  • Aluminum Spool
  • Rod Clamp
  • Barrel Handle Grip
  • A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings)
  • Clicker
  • Counter Balanced Handle (TLD 15 only)
  • Approved for use in Saltwater
  • Rated for use with Mono, Fluorocarbon and PowerPro lines

Have had 4 of these over 10 years. They can't be beat at this price range. Will last a long time. Great for dolphin, kings and sails

The standard for saltwater reels
January 12, 2016
When I started getting into the bigger fish and heavier duty fishing equipment I started searching for what reels to get. There's no other reel that's recommended more than the TLD25. For a fraction of the price of the high end reels you can catch pretty much anything in the ocean (realistically) with this reel. After starting with 1 to try it out I ended up buying 3 more to round out my trolling spread. The only thing I would say that could be improved is the handle. I've see several people who have upgraded to a larger handle that swear it makes it a much better reel.
Pros-Entry Level Priced -Rugged and sturdy -Large line capacity
Cons-Handle is a bit small

Awsome for Kings and Cobia from the pier
November 19, 2015
If you ever walk to the end of a pier in NC and look at all the pin rig fishermen, 80% of them will be using this reel. I being one of them. It has proven reliability and durability when sitting in harsh saltwater environments for 15+ hours a day. The clicker is nice and loud and the drag is smooth. I've decked numerous kings and cobia. When that cobia gets up close and you need to lock her down this reel does the job.

Great For Kings and Cobia

I use this on a stand up rod on my pin rig. Has plenty of line capacity to let the kings run and the drag to fight cobia hard.

Favorite Bottom Fishing Reel
June 9, 2015
Overall a great reel if you like to bottom fish; solid stopping drag and excellent ability to adjust drag.
ProsHolds up to saltwater very well and overall just a great reel.
ConsA higher speed retrieve would be nice when you hit depths of 180 or more. They make a two speed but its much more expensive.

Use for Tuna and Mahi Trolling
January 25, 2015
Good reel. Added three more to my arsenal. Pair it with a 6ft 30 class standup trolling rod for a nice outfit.
ConsThe reel seat should have a tie down eye so I can clip on my rod saver strap while trolling. I don't understand why Shimano does this for the Tallus but not the TLD. The extra cost would be negligible.
