Drag issues be warned
January 6, 2017
Good reel for the money but as others have mentioned, when drag is screaming out with a big fish the drag knob slowly turns and causes to drag to tighten. This resulted in several lost fish and eventually the rod and reel being lost as it ripped a rod holder off my dock and shark taking it all.

finally used this in vanuatu.bottom jigging with a 250 gram jig.30lb braid.2013 model 9500. i was with jigging regulars. caught 20kg dog tooth tuna. had drag nearly all on. fish were peeling braid off, then i got some back.the reel did what i wanted it to do.15 mins of hard work. great reel! we were fishing 150 metres deep.i think it must have taken most of the line, then i got it back.drags seemed to work very well. 120lb leeder. i will buy another.i dont think it would catch bigger, but we will find out. i hope there is a bigger model to buy.colin

heavy duty reel
June 2, 2016
Bought this reel about three weeks ago, used it four times and so far I'm impressed. Reminds me of the old Penn reels, solid and simple. Huge drag disc. I bought mine for $112.00, it was $149.00. One of those decisions your glad you made. Side note: it is a heavy reel, you'll definitely be sore the next day if your casting alot, but worth it.
Prossolid, simple ( like me ) and a good looking reel ( like me )
Consnone so far. i would be surprised to hear of any faults

Unreliable Drag
January 20, 2016
Recently purchased 2x 9500 OS for their big spool capacity, used for the first time on smaller fish and works great but used for trolling for Yellowfin Tuna and when drag is set up to strike and fish runs the spool knob turns and tightens ever so slightly and increases the drag, this is a major problem as it goes from 10kg drag to 15kg drag in 3 clicks causing bust off, not such a problem for 20kg fish but larger fish it is no good. Thought it was just 1 off but after inspection of other reel it is the same. Waiting for reply from Fin Nor and will post reply.

On arrival the fit and finished of the Fin-Nor OFS9500 OFFSHORE, seemed to be reasonable, However, after closer inspection there appeared to be a problem with the drag knob (KT332-01) assembly. The nylon washer (not removable) appeared to have a rough spot of some type of hard (alloy?) silver, liquid metal. The overflow was welded to the nylon washer (in several places) and came in contact with the spool itself. Therefore with use, the knob could damage the spool. Contacted Zebco (very nice people) and explained the problem. Within days another knob was sent to be me. Another problem, the knob refused to thread onto the shaft. Zebco was contacted again, another knob was sent and this one had quality control problems far worst then the first knob. Since this was a repair problem, Tackledirect was not contacted. Question: Does Fin-Nor have "Inspectors" that check out the product parts before it is sold to the public??? If the knob cannot be reasonably manufactured, what about the very critical aspects of the reel? Consequently, this reel cannot be trusted on any bluewater trip. Therefore, it sits on my desk as a expensive paper weight. Have not sent the reel back to Zebco, because (I feel ) they would just send another defective product. Currently, do not feel Fin-Nor's Quality Control is up to the task. Therefore regretfully, must give this reel a negative rating.
ConsPoor quality control.

Great spinning reel for bottom fishing
November 22, 2014
Used the 6500 for some grouper fishing and with the drag cranked down they were no match for this reel. Pulled 25 and 30lb fish out of cover with no problems to the reel. A great buy at twice the price.
ProsGreat smooth and strong drag system. Lots of line capacity
ConsIf used properly there are none

Great reel for the price.

This is a solid well build reel. It has very heavy drag and line capacity on a spinning reel and is definitely proven against big fish. Great reel for a great price. The reel is a little bit heavy in weight but it is expected with a reel this size.
ProsHeavy drag Large line capacity Great price
ConsHeavy weight

Heavy Duty
June 18, 2013
This is a very heavy duty spinning reel. It's got a ton of drag and a solid build, great for offshore fishing. Along with being heavy duty it is also heavy and big, so just be aware of that. Also, something I wish I had known is that if you don't put the spool on correctly, the screw on the top will lock into the spool and as a fish runs it will actually crank down on the drag. This happened to me last weekend tuna fishing east of Chatham, MA.
ProsHeavy duty Stong Drag Well Built
ConsHeavy Large size Use caution when putting the spool on...

Hi what rod would you match with this Fin Nor 55000.
Any 7 ft spinning rod either medium-heavy to heavy would work well with this reel.
