Essential Tackle for Florida Keys Tarpon

Spring is prime time for tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys. As water temperatures rise, these magnificent creatures migrate north, following schools of baitfish through channels, inlets, and along the coral reefs. Whether you're casting from a flats skiff or trolling the deeper waters offshore, the Florida Keys offer some of the best tarpon fishing grounds in the world.

Rods

When it comes to tarpon, the right rod is your best ally in the fight. You'll need a medium-heavy to heavy action  saltwater rod with a length of 7'6" to 8'6". Look for a rod with a strong backbone to handle the initial strike and powerful runs, but also with enough flex in the tip to absorb headshakes and prevent break-offs.

Reels

Pair your rod with a high-quality reel capable of handling the tarpon's raw power. A  saltwater grade spinning reel 4000 to 14000 size range depending on the class of tarpon you are targeting, or a conventional reel with a smooth drag system capable of handling hundreds of yards of line is crucial. Look for a reel with a gear ratio of around 4:1 to 6:1 for a good balance of cranking power and line retrieval speed. You'll also want models with corrosion-resistant materials to withstand the saltwater environment.

Line

Braided main line is the preferred choice for tarpon fishing, since it offers the strength needed to battle tarpon without sacrificing sensitivity while also increasing your line capacity with its thinner diameter. Opt for 50-65 lb.  braided line. Its near-zero stretch allows for better bite detection and control during the fight.

Leader

A long leader (8-10 feet) is essential to keep your bait away from the boat and avoid spooking the tarpon.  Fluorocarbon leader material is nearly invisible in the water and offers superior abrasion resistance. We recommend a fluorocarbon leader of 80-100 lb. to handle the tarpon's abrasive mouth and prevent break-offs.

Lures & Bait

Live bait reigns supreme for tarpon fishing. Large crabs, mullet, pinfish, and ladyfish are all excellent choices. If live bait isn't available, large, heavy  jigs or soft plastics can be effective substitutes. Bucktail jigs, soft plastic swimbaits, and topwater plugs can all entice a tarpon's aggressive strike.

Circle hooks are a must for tarpon fishing. Choose a hook size appropriate for your bait, typically ranging from 7/0 to 10/0.
