This reel delivers!
I was skeptical to use for surf fishing, concerned with issues of tangling after casting. However after a couple of adjustment, the back-slash was under control. I use it on my 11', but may do as well, if not better on longer poles in launching the load. Very impressive.
ProsSmooth drag. Solid construction.
ConsA bit heavy for all-day use. Recommend placing on a sand spike.

Money in the Bank
My favorite light tackle jigging reel and a magnificent fluke reel to boot. Takes braid with no issues. Have pried 25 pound stripers off the bottom jigging with this reel. Worth the tariff.

Simply Outstanding....which they should be considering the tariff
I own two of these reels, the 965 and the 975CS. By far the best Penn reels I've ever owned. Use them for light tackle jigging and for fluke fishing...I especially like the 975CS for fluke fishing as you can easily control the release of extra line with your thumb after the initial bite. Have pried 40 inch stripers off the bottom of the Chesapeake with no issue. Have owned the 965 for almost 11 years, it is made like a tank. Both handle 20-30 pound braid with no ill effects. Only wish they were cheaper...

A solid product
This reel is solid, well built with the feel of a larger, more expensive product. The drag is smooth and the operation easy. It's comfortable to use and effective for a wide range of targets, from flounder to striped bass and blues. This reel will get a lot of use, for sure.

Looking to put together a rod with the penn 975cs. I fish mostly freshwater, but utilize surfcasting techniques, throw mostly lures 3/4-2.5oz, and occasional bait. Fish from a boat also. I am planning many trips to the cape for striper, blues, what ever will bite. Want a set up that will blend for both, sorry for the tall order. Thanks Tom

What is the best surf casting reel for distance casting out from shoreline. Make, Model number and cost. Thanks, Glenn

Of the Penn Internationals, the 975CS will be the best choice (PEN-0125). If you look at other brands, the Avet SX MC (AVE-0108) is great and less expensive than the Penn.
