Oh my God it's finally back.
When they discontinued this reel i had a fit. I have an older one and this thing is a time proven work of art.
Prosstill have my 2 older ones fro 10+ years ago. Require no maintenance. just keep on going. Sand, no problem. Dirt? no problem. Saltwater? no problem.
Conswish it was as cheap as the older models, but the must have updated it.

Welcome Back!
Well! Well! Look who the cat dragged in! A blast from the past has returned (by popular demand) to the surf fishing scene. Penn recently has re-introduced the 704Z AND 706Z. And I for one. just had to have it in my most modest collection. Upon arrival, took it out for some light bass fishing and had some minor success. The Penn functioned perfectly and completed the job it was designed for. This test was only an introduction to the reel and not a torture test. Only time (and use) will prove the longevity of the 706Z. As for now...All I can say is...I really like it!
Pros(1) Reasonable price. (2) Brass and stainless steel worm gear drive. (3) Modern metallurgy, mostly metal construction. (4) Simple repair and maintenance. Great Penn Service. Please Note: I am just a simple fisherman, that no one ever heard of. No gain for me in anyway for statements made.
Cons(1) This following is not really a Con...Use this reel for what it was made for. Forget 600 pound Groupers. Like Dirty Harry once said. "Every man must know his limitations..." And every reel has it's limitations. This is one of those reels. Enjoy and use it for what it was made for. (2) The finish on the reel could stand some improvement. At least mine could...

Excellent surf reel
The 706 is a tried and true spinning reel. Maintenance is as simple as anyone can hope for. I have this spooled with 40# powerpro, on a 10.6 St Croix Legend, and it casts a mile. Priced perfectly and delivered quick.
ProsMaintenance, price point
ConsA little grinding on spool edge when dunked in sandy water

It is a very durable reel
My Penn 706Z Series reel is a very durable fishing reel, I have drilled it to make sand flush out and I have been using it for 15 years and it is still going strong. If I ever need new parts, they are available now that there is a new release of the 706z. I love mine and you will love yours!

Great back then, great now.
I had this reel twenty years ago, and now I have one again and it's still my favorite reel. I have it paired with an 11 foot lamiglas and I have caught a lot of big bass and blues!

Ultimate dependable reel!
This reel is the most dependable reel under $500. If I ever have a problem, it is so easy to take apart and repair! Packed with grease, I can fish it totally submerged for hours.

Simple and great
Very straight forward design. The Z series of reels has a long standing reputation. Although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of newer reels on the market, the Z series will provide years or service with little maintenance. Parts are cheap and easy to find. Straight forward design means anyone with low mechanical knowledge can breakdown, repair, and assemble these reels. Even while out on a trip.

Great reel
Like the title says. Great reel. Have it on my 10"0 lamiglass. Only issue I had was with braided line. I would get wind knots like crazy. Switched to mono and works great but might have been the braid I was using. I used all different size plugs. From 1/2 oz to 4 oz
ProsEasy access cover for maintenance.

ProsSimple design with high quality parts Strong alloy frame and spool drag is excellent:smooth and consistent Ht-100 washer have good stopping power
ConsCan,t think of any Oh,it needs at least 10ball-bearings!!( Intended as humor!!)

The reel is coming out in two models the 704z which is the standard with the bail, and the 706z is the bail-less model.
