Penn Battle III DX Spinning Reels are built tough to withstand whatever the saltwater angler puts these reels through. The Battle III DX reels are more powerful than the previous Battle III spinning reels. Brass main gears are in every size along with an improved HT-100 drag system. Transfer more power through the gears to your big catch on the other end of the line with oversized EVA handle knobs.

  • Instant anti-reverse
  • Aluminum reel spool
  • Full metal body and sideplate
  • CNC Gear Technology with brass main gear
  • HT-100 drag system with wave spring for linear adjustment
  • 6+1 sealed stainless steel ball bearing system
  • Oversized EVA handle knobs
  • Superline spool

Snap Jigging Machine
October 6, 2021
I am a charter boat captain that uses the Battle III 4000DX as my personal tool to teach my customers the black art of deep water snap jigging. Spooled with 20-lb Maxcuatro braid and matched to a Tsunami Sapphire XT Pro 631M rod, this combo offers perfect balance and drag power to take double header sea bass and cod from down deep in 150-to-200 foot wrecks. It's also a great combo for sight casting to dorado under the lobster pots and ocean flotsam. Price is decent for the quality and performance. We'll see if it holds up.
Pros
  • Bronze gears, light weight, 15-lbs of drag.
Cons
  • Need to have better access and availability for spare spools. If this is a "dealer special", that is, not everyone can offer it, then it is incumbent on the seller to offer spare spools top the reel purchasers at a reasonable cost. When you are deepwater wreck fishing or get spooled by a large fish, snapping on a spare spool in 10-seconds or less is a game saver.

Best bang for the buck

I love Penn because they dont useless functions like anti reserve. This reel has been smooth and durable so far. On top it all it's aesthetically pleasing. Little heavier than my 3000 stradic but nothing can beat a Shimano so cant complain

Awesome reel for the Money
September 26, 2021
Awesome reel for the Money, Only complaint is why didn’t they put some water proof seals like the spinfisher. With comes in handy when your spraying the reel down with fresh water after each use! If they made it like a spinfisher with keeping the brass gears. They would have blown it out of the park That’s my opinion!
Pros
  • Smooth, Brass gears ,Awesome!
Cons
  • They should have made it water resistant like a spinfisher? I like to spray the reels down with a garden hose after each use to protect the reel. But without being sealed it?s tougher to do that

I purchased the DX model in a 3000 size on 11/23/2020 and It has almost been 9 full months and zero issues. The reel has amazing drag for the size and is extremely smooth. I highly recommend it for all you inshore anglers.

Awesome Reel
June 24, 2021
This is an awesome reel at a great price. Paired this with an Okuma Celilo CE-S-762-1, 4-10 for now. I intend to use it on a heavier duty rod as well. This reel is exactly what I was looking for with an aluminum body, and brass pinion and main gear. Excellent! I don't expect any flex like in some of my other reels not made of metal. This reel is stout yet not too heavy. It is smooth on the retrieve, and I love Penn's HT-100 drag, it's top notch. Thank you Penn for an awesome reel!
Pros
  • Aluminum body, brass main and pinion gears, HT-100 drag system. Looks sharp too!
Cons
  • None.

Great reel from an American company
June 15, 2021
Fish offshore, Inshore, and the intercoastal of Florida with this real. It is lighter than the slammer 3, smooth casting, smooth reeling, and has excellent line lay. Pulled in Amberjack, snapper, grouper, and snook without any issues. Gear train feel solid, and I do not worry about failure when pulling in The heavier fish. Does not have the waterproof rating of the slammer or Spinfisher, but seems fine after a spray down from the hose. Definitely recommend this reel.

great reel
June 5, 2021
I have used this reel 8 times and very satisfied with performance. In one outing the reel fell into surf being covered completely with ocean water and sand. When I cleaned it was surprised to see that it was sealed with no water intrusion. Reel sets line straight with no wind knots. Braided 30# works best. Would buy again!!

Great reel for the price
June 1, 2021
I have taken this reel out on several kayak trips and it has performed very well. I have it paired with a 7ft St.Croix Premier Medium Fast spooled with 20lb power pro. HT100 drag system is buttery smooth and line lay is perfect without using the included spool shims. This reel has been plenty splashed with saltwater and rinsed off with fresh. No signs of seizing or sticking. Highly recommend this reel. Just avoid dunking it underwater since it’s not completely sealed like a Spinfisher is.
Pros
  • Decently light
  • Looks cool
  • Great line lay
  • Ht 100 drag
  • Did I mention it looks cool 😎
Cons
  • Not completely sealed

Is this reel smooth under pressure? My first penn reel was not and I was wondering if all penn reels were like that.
1 Answer
This is a very solid well designed reel, while i have not personally fished it so i cannot say with absolute certainty, i would assume that this reel is very smooth under pressure with the brass gears and full metal construction.

What was your previous Penn reel you were having issues with?

Eric Fennell
from Beaufort, SC asked:
November 2, 2020
What is the difference in the DX models over the regular Battle III model?
1 Answer
The biggest difference is that Brass main gears are in every size of the Penn Battle III DX as opposed to the Battle III which only has the brass gearing in the 6k-10k models. The stronger gearing makes for a more robust and powerful reel.
