Not good for the surf
I bought a Fierce 2 8000 for surf fishing at bass pro, and I was not impressed. I have a fierce1 7000 and 8000 and those are tanks. However, after one surf trip the drag became sticky and made a grinning noise when being piled out. I take my reels apart and clean them with warm water after every saltwater trip. Get a fierce one if you can find it.
ConsDoesn't matter how well you clean it, it's gonna break down.

Bought two of these 4 or 5 years ago to use as loaners. They were part of a combo paired with Tsunami Jigging rods. Mostly used for red snapper and other bottom fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Honestly wasn't expecting much, but have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. After years of abuse by mostly inexperienced fishermen, they still look and work as good as new. Did replace the drag washers after first year and a half with washers from the Penn Battle, but these reels have proven to be reliable workhorses. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a lower priced reel that works reliably.

Best bang for the buck!
Been using this reel for a few years now. I use it commercially for triple tail and cobia and never had a problem with it. Of course I always rinse my reels after use. It's a penn and if you take care of it , it will take care of you!

Good Spinning Reel for Inshore
This is a very good reel if you are targeting inshore species such as snook, redfish, trout, and small tarpon. I recommend to buy this reel with a light tackle rod, probably like a 6-17lb rod with a fast action.
ProsGreat Inshore Reel Affordable and good quality

Bought this to go on 9ft surf rod. Fished Pensacola Beach with it. Smooth casting and retreive, handles bull reds fairly easy.
Prosvalue for the price

Good reel so far
I picked this up as a combo about a year ago and so far I haven't had any issues. I loaded it up with 50lb braid and have used it for wreck fishing off Charleston with good success. The reel has stood up well so far with no signs of corrosion. It goes well with my Penn Battle 5000 combo.

Good Starter Surf Reel
This is my go to recommendation for people who want to get into surf fishing. Its priced reasonably and can handle most decent sized surf fish. I have 2 of these for tossing bait for the kids and they have been working fine. I do wash them down with freshwater after fishing and clean them every winter.

I am looking on your website at purchasing the Penn Fierce 8000 or the Diawa Emcast Plus 6000. I am surf fishing the Outer Banks, NC. Using a 12' rod with 7-9oz weight plus bait, line is 20# ProSpec. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on which reel you think is a better fit for casting distance or overall use.
Both of those reels would work fine for the application that you described.
