great pick
The price was right and it was a gift for my son. I was not sure he would take care of it or care about it at all. I did not want to get junk but I was not going to get him a Lami , let alone a a Mojo and VS. This is wonderful. I'm buying one for myself
Prosprice reliability smooth
Consnone so far The Jury is out on the rod but so far so good

Good for fluke
Best fluke setup I own. Also good for schoolie fish. Handles them nicely and is powerful enough for a bigger fish. Reel is smooth and has a nice drag.

For small fish is ok
I decided to purchase this combo pack after reading other people's review. But I will say this combo is ok if you are only on the small game. I caught a 25" blue and a 22" striper takes forever to get them in. Reel is not smooth and hard to turn for heavy fishes.
ProsGreat price
ConsFor small game only.

Used for casting and live lining
I use this rod and reel combo for rockfishing... It does pretty well with 30" and under but def have to work to get a fish bigger than that. It is a very smooth reel has great action. I loaded it up with 30lb braid and haven't had a problem at all.

Jigging and Boat Combo

Good Value on a saltwater combo
Purchased for use while saltwater kayak fishing. I believe the waterproof Penn will need fewer rebuilds after the inevitable underwater immersions. The reel is heavy in the hand but usable. The rod is stiff and who knows how long it will last, but for the extreme environment that is saltwater kayak fishing, this combo makes sense...especially the reel.
ProsValue and ease of buying a matched rod and reel combination. Reel is waterproof and drag is substantial enough to tame big fish
ConsReel is heavy. Rod is stiff

Amazing light surf combo
In early December/late November, there will be sandeels and tiny stripers, this combo makes the fishing so much fun with the schoolies! Very powerful and I have landed a couple 30lb fish with it.

Salt water dog
I haven't used it yet as I am not sure about the size. I have the 6500 and it works excellent for Lingcod at 50 to 100' I got this one for deeper water but now think I oversized, not sure yet so I haven't spooled it. Maybe should have gone with the 7500. May have to return it for an exchange, just holding off because of shipping. If I keep it, will see how it works for Tuna
ProsExcellent reel. Rugged and good for the salt water
ConsDon't have any except for maybe the weight. Will know more if I decide to keep it..

Nice combo
The SSV is an excellent surf reel. Durable yet not heavy or cumbersome feeling. Do not dunk it, the seals do not make it a VanStall. The rod is nice for back bay plugging.

Excellent Salt Water Spinning Rod & Reel for Smaller Fighters
I was very happy with this rod and reel combo from the word go. I went out to the Kelp Beds not far off of Point Loma (San Diego, CA). I would estimate that this rod and reel would be good for catching fish - up to - approximately 15 Lbs. or so - with the drag being tested to the max with a 20 pound, hard fighting fish. The rod and reel casted far and accurately - to the kelp patties. The rod got completely bent over - and some of the fights were looking pretty iffy - but the rod and reel got the job done, and I never got broke off (I was using 20 Lb. mono). Mark
ProsExcellent Salt water Rod and Reel for a fair price. The free lining flip thing worked well with live bait off the Kelp Beds. Thank you Tackle Direct for spooling it up with the 20 Lb. mono - it worked great.
ConsNone that I can think of as of yet. I just do not expect this type of reel (spinning) to be able to hold up against bigger, (25 Lb. +) tougher yellowfin, dorado, yellowtail, etc. (but for the smaller fish - it's truly great).

Great products
I ordered the 4500 and 6500 combos and they are great. They packaged them very well and nothing had the slightest chance of getting damaged. The reels are extremely smooth and I would recommend getting the neoprene covers for protection of the reel.

Great Price - Excellent Service
I purchased 4 of these Penn Spin-fisher V-Live Liner Rod/Reel Combos. The price was great, and the quality of the gear was outstanding. I received two rods that were damaged in the transport. Tackle Direct made it simple to exchange the rods without delay. I was sent a return authorization via email and the new replacement rods were sent to me without delay. I am a Sport-fishing/Lobster Charter Captain and go through a lot of equipment. Penn products have stood the test of time for me, so choosing Penn equipment was an easy decision for me. I searched several sites and wholesale options and could not find anyone who could match the deal Tackle Direct was offering. Stay tuned to their specials, get on their mailing list, as they have a lot of high quality items at very reasonable prices and their shipping process is excellent too.

Best Reel Money can buy.
This was my first purchase of the Penn Spinfisher V and let me tell you it will not be my last. This reel is tough and the retrieve is so smooth. Great for fresh and saltwater fishing. Great price for the reel and rod combo. Worth the money.

Iā€™m looking for a combo that would be ideal for fishing artificial reefs of the coast of the Carolinas; BSB, vermillion and red snapper, triggers, etc. Would the 4500 be ideal for this application?
1 Answers
The ideal size for the application your using the combo for would be the 4500 size reel with the 7' M power rod. Fishing for snappers and triggers you don't need anything larger than the 4500.

What rod and reel size would you recommend for tarpon in the penn brand
1 Answers
We would suggest either the 5500 or 6500 sizes for the Spinfisher V or Slammer III, and the 6000 size for the Clash or Conflict. For rods we would suggest the 7' or 7'6" Medium-Heavy Carnage II Spinning Boat Rods.

I am looking at purchasing 2 rod and reels to be used for casting poppers offshore for Dolphin. The Penn 5500 is what I was leaning toward. Do you have a suggestion for a rod that would combine with that real for that purpose or another reel and rod combo ?

Eric, that combo would not being the ideal for what your doing. I would recommend Staying with the Penn 5500 and maybe try a Tsunami Popping rod TSU-0027
