Solid as a rock and super compact.
Got this reel for fishing off the coast of Catalina island. You could be dropping 300ft for ling cod in the morning and fly lining sardines in the afternoon for yellowtail. That ment I need something strong, light and reliable. The SS fits that bill to a T. I matched it with a seeker black steel cork handle 8' 15-25lbs rod and wow. I pulled a 20lbs ling cod up from about 175 feet without batting an eye. The drag is more than ample and smooth as butter. When you get the reel it's a bit stiff, almost like a baseball mit it needs to be worked and played with a bit. You will notice it loosen up and be even more of a pleasure to use over time. Man is this thing light and compact too. It's shocking how small it is but the amount of power it has is very impressive. I love this reel so far and cant wait for tuna season! This is my first truth and absolutely not my last! Ordered mine over the phone and the guys at Tackle Direct are top notch in customer service and satisfaction. They made this interaction nothing more than a pleasure.
ProsLight weight and compact Strong build Smooth and ample drag Beautiful design

DON'T - STOP
Worst reel I have ever purchased. Bad feel to it, box like, squared ends are uncomfortable, loose fitting star, always loosens even after tightening and or you just lightly bump it. They do sell a nice hat though.

"Star Drag", enthusiasts dream
I love star drag reels. And I like reels that are above and beyond just a fishing tool. I have 10 Daiwa Ryoga reels of all sizes, which I believe are the benchmark of Daiwa quality......but they are "light tackle levelwinds". Seeing that I like to go monster hunting from time to time. I've smoked the levelwinds on a few reels before (Not the Ryoga's) So I wanted to outfit myself with a extreme duty "high-end" star drag, non-levelwind reel. So I choose the TRUTH SS.
Prosthe one piece design and open spool LOOK at the size of those allen heads screws in the reel......super HD. Casts like a dream due to the ceramic bearings, silently. Loads of range on the star drag filled with 30 pound Braid, I'll stay connected on everything I hook. Engineered like no other star drag reel out there. Which in my mind being a reel enthusiast, has it in a completely different reel category. Everyone seems to make a small Lever drag these days, or a knock-off of one. I bought the TRUTH because of made in the USA, and compared to the Daiwa Saltiga 15H, which I also love, but never spent the $$ on. The TRUTH came out on top after months of contemplating.
ConsThey could make the star drag "CLICK" and that would have it really KICKED UP a notch. The spool tension knob could and should probably be a bit "tighter". I heard that the brand new reels have a bearing versus a bushing in the handle knob (?) mine isn't like it's going to spin freely. To do with TD, not TRUTH: """""""BE AWARE""""""" all the photos you'll see of this reel "SHOWS" it with a reel clamp. My reel didn't come with one. So I called Tackle Direct. The rep. on the phone said they do not come with them and he checked two others to see if they had a reel clamp. And I'd have to buy one from TRUTH. "well hombre, "no I'm not!" I emailed TRUTH, and git a fast response, that the batch of reels out to Tackle Direct were no packed up with the reel clamp, and that TRUTH employee is no longer with the company, and I'll get a reel clamp sent to me right away. Yep, two days later it showed up in my mail box!!!! So, if you get from TD a TRUTH reel that doesn't come with a reel clamp (because YOU see all photos of the SS reel with one) Just get with TRUTH and they'll send you one like they did me, I suppose. BTW, I told the rep on the phone, they need to be AWARE of this, because they'll possibly get more disgruntled new SS reel owners.

If I wanted to use this reel to troll and pitch baits to Mahi would it be a decent choice? Also any suggestion for a rod? I just saw your stuff and I LOVE it!!!
The Seigler Reels SS Small Star Conventional Reel paired with a Shimano Trevala would be a good combo for the application your using it for.
