Got (4) 2500's and (1) 1000 saharas and love very one of them.

Hands down by far the best ultralite 1000 series reel I ever bought.

I never truely loved a freshwater reel since my quantum snapshots...... But, this reel makes me totally forget about them.......

Smooth as glass, great line lay, quiet, and good drag...... Line never gets caught under the spool....
ProsGreat reel at any price. Great price too

Smooth & Beautiful

Shimano has always been my reel of choice. I've bought $20 shimano reels that have held up over the years and have caught some nice fish too. So I was expecting the best with the Sahara. Shimano did not fail. The reel not only looks great it performs as well. It casts a country mile and is smooth as heck. My expectations were met with this reel, well done shimano.
ProsGreat reel for the price Smooth Drag Looks good Cast a mile

Great reel

I bought a Sedona 1000 and a Sahara 1000 at the same time, 8 years ago, primarily for trout and shad fishing. From day one I had problems with the line on the Sahara; I thought I was over spooling so I made sure not to go over what's recommended. 2 or 3 Ok casts, and then a nightmare, a complete mess of line all over. Try mono, flouro, braid, same problem. After few years I decided to give it away. Last year I came across a Sahara 2500 used, really like new, for a real bargain. Decided to buy it and I couldn't be more happy. Great reel!

I got this for the wife to use with live bait and artificial. For the money it's very smooth handling and the drag works great. No issues with corrosion, but I rinse and clean more than most probably. To date the drag has handled a 35 inch redfish. Has been a great purchase.

Tarpon & Permit
August 14, 2017
The reel is light, but strong. The drag is smooth and powerful. We landed several jacks, two tarpon and a permit, the largest was 30lbs, on the 5000 with 225 yards of 20 lb test.
ProsLight weight - all day fish ability

Was looking for a good reel to wade rivers with for smallmouth. Knowing it will get dunked and banged on lots of rocks, didn't want to break the bank. Phenomenally smooth reel and great drag at this price point. Will buy more Saharas
ProsBest low/mid price point FW spinning reel ever
ConsNone so far

Which model would you recommend for fishing on the surf and piers.  Not looking for a large reel. I was looking at the 2500.
1 Answer
Hello Dave,

For what you are doing, the 2500 may be a  bit too small, especially when hoisting fish up over the railings of the pier. Take a look at the 5000. That will be a perfect all around size when bouncing between the piers and beach!

Does this reel have the reverse system included?
1 Answer
The Sahara FI does not have an anti-reverse switch, therefore it cannot be reeled in the opposite direction. Most manufactures are removing this feature from their newer generation reels as the switches frequently malfunction.

What rod(s) would be a nice match with the 3000 size for inshore fishing the Gulf coast?
1 Answer
The St. Croix Mojo Inshore Spinning Rods 7 ft M rod would be a good match for the Shimano Sahara 3000 for Inshore fishing. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs and have a great day.

Can you fish this reel in saltwater?
1 Answer
You can use it in Fresh or Salt. You may want to look at the Nasci if it's saltwater.
