Reel Technologies

At Shimano, precision engineering meets the art of fishing. Their Reel Technologies are a testament to the Shimano commitment to excellence. Explore the following groundbreaking features that set Shimano reels apart.

2-Speed Gearing:
This shifting mechanism is designed so that gearing changes are quick and easy, even when fighting a fish. The low gear ratio used for high-power retrieves is selected by pushing the button on the base of the handle. Return to the high-speed ratio by sliding the release button along the handle shank. By using two sets of gears, the drive and pinion gears are always engaged. There is no gear meshing during the shift.

2-Speed Oscillation:
2 Speed Oscillation is an advanced way of laying the line onto the spool during the retrieve. As the rotor turns the spool moves forward quickly and then returns slowly. This prevents the coils of line on the spool from interacting with each other.

A-RB:
A-RB stainless-steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless-steel ball bearings in high salinity environments.

Aero Wrap:
Superb line lay is a Shimano reels hallmark. Fed by Power Roller, the Aero system lays close, parallel coils (Aero Wrap) so line builds evenly on the spool and exits cleanly with minimum friction for longer, more accurate casts.

Aero Wrap II:
Aero Wrap and the advanced Aero Wrap II is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides superb uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast. Aero Wrap II is considered one of the best line lay systems in the world.

Aerowave:
Aerowave is used on some Shimano saltwater spinning reels. This oscillation system is simple in nature, yet produces excellent line lay with both braid and mono.

Aluminum Cold Forged (CF) Spool:
These spools are cold forged from aluminium alloy. The cold forging process creates a lightweight spool with increased structural strength and more resistance to abrasion and damage.

Anti-Twist Fin:
Shimano designed the Anti-Twist Fin for enhanced line management resulting in more effective fishing. The flexible polymer fin is installed near the line roller. This maintains line tension to reduce sagging and prevents the line from falling off the bottom of the spool or wrapping around the spool in an uneven manner.

AR-C Spool:
Shimano AR-C Spool is a patented spool design with an angled spool lip. This design enables the line to leave the spool with less friction and in smaller coils resulting in longer more accurate casts. AR-C spools are proven to reduce backlash and wind knots when using braid. AR-C spools are now standard on almost all Shimano reels.

AR-C Light Spool:
12% lighter but equally as strong as current spool.

Barrier Coat Spool:
Improves protection to corrosion, therefore improving durability.

Barrier Gear:
Shimano's Barrier Gear is a high-strength, durable gear that reduces salt contamination from saltwater. It is 20% thicker than previous models and 38% stronger than the existing Stella SW. The Barrier Gear has a proprietary surface coating.

Ci4:
CI4 is an exclusive material created by the inter-fusion of carbon and polyamide. It is almost as strong as metal with the lightness of a composite. CI4 is used for the body and rotor on many Shimano reels.

Ci4+:
CI4 is a Shimano original material reinforced with carbon fiber that is lighter and has a higher strength than conventional resin material. CI4+ is an advanced version of the original CI4 material and is 2.5x more rigid than its predecessor. While improving lightness and rigidity, reel bodies and rotors built with CI4+ are further reduced in size and weight.

CoreProtect:
Total Protection, the concept of CoreProtect is simple: to provide water resistance without creating a heavy rotational feeling. There are three key areas of the reel that require protection: the roller clutch, the body and the line roller.

CoreSolid Body:
CoreSolid Body integrates the B-Side Plate, levelwind guard and frame into a solid one-piece construction. This delivers an unprecedented feeling of rigidity and sensitivity, and is the first design of this type in a low-profile baitcast reel.

Cross Carbon Drag:
The Cross Carbon Drag material provides a wider range of drag settings compared to traditional drag materials. The Cross Carbon Drag provides the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever while providing anglers with increased durability.

Digital Control (DC):
The Digital Control system is a waterproof, self-energizing system which is computer chip controlled. It recharges with each cast and needs no battery or power source. During the initial moments of the cast, the energy generated by the rotation of the spool is stored in the Digital Control circuit board and powers the Digital Braking System on subsequent casts. During the cast, the Digital Braking system calculates and provides the optimal braking force. This revolutionary system makes accurate and long distance casting possible, while at the same time minimizing tangles, knots, and overruns.

Digital Control (DC) 4x8:
Compared to previous generations of DC brake systems, there is now 8 precise brake settings paired to 4 modes, FL(Fluoro), P(PE), NM(Nylon), X(Extreme Long Cast), giving anglers the ability to make precise brake adjustments.

Digital Control (DC) Exsence Tune:
State of the art braking system for throwing seabass lures with little trouble on PE lines. 8 Precise brake settings paired to 4 modes, XP(Casting with Tailwind), P(PE), N(Nylon) and F(Fluoro).

Digital Control (DC) MD Tune:
In addition to F(Fluro), P(PE) and NM(Nylon), there is XB, 4 modes specially catered for casting heavy weight lures such as big bait and metal jigs. Together with 8 precise brake settings, optimal brake control according to the weight of the lure and air resistance is achieved.

DuraCross:
DuraCross provides smooth and reliable drag performance with incredible durability. Constructed to enhance overall durability, this revolutionary drag washer incorporates cutting-edge materials woven in a unique pattern compared to conventional drag washers. Without sacrificing a smooth drag feel, this new material is greater than 10x more durable for improved drag performance.

Dyna-Balance:
Dyna-Balance reduces wobble during the retrieve by counter balancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing Shimano are able to redistribute the rotor weight to create eliminate vibrations.

e-Exciting Drag Sound:
The e-Exciting Drag Sound is an electronic drag sound from the reel when a fish makes a run. This creates a modern solution to the mechanical clicker while adding excitement to an angler’s experience.

E.I treatment:
This advanced surface treatment process ensures that these reels can withstand the harshest marine conditions and continue to perform at peak levels for years to come.

Easy Maintenance:
Easy Maintenance is a small oil lubrication port that enables direct lubrication of the inner workings of a reel with approved Shimano lubricant. Some high-end Shimano reels have a line roller lubrication option.

Escape Hatch:
By flipping a switch, the sideplate swivels downward, giving the angler quick access to adjust VBS weights. The switch is located in a position that is easy to use, yet remains out of the way to prevent accidental opening. The sideplate is smooth for comfort when palming the reel.

Exciting Drag Sound:
Exciting Drag Sound technology enables drag sound on a baitcasting reel without using the function of a rattle or clicker. This ultimately makes it easy for an angler to determine whether a fish is pulling drag and provides an advantage during the fight.

Fallever:
The unique Fallever allows anglers to control the fall speed and therefore the action of jigs during the drop to the bottom.

Fightin Drag:
Shimano Fightin' Drag offers adjustable drag on the fly when reeling in fish. Utilizing an easy-to-adjust lever, the drag can be switched between a low drag setting before hooking the fish and quickly transitioned during the fight.

Fightin Drag II:
Shimano's Fightin' Drag II is a secondary drag system that allows anglers to make quick adjustments to the drag setting. The drag setting regulates the tension or force required to take line off the spool. Tightening the drag makes it harder for the fish to run and take line, while having a loose drag makes it easier. The Fightin' Drag II adds a rear strike lever that enables solid hooksets without losing your drag setting.

Fine Dot LCD:
Fine Dot LCD Display provides ultra clear resolution in full sunlight.

Finesse Tune Brake (FTB):
FTB is designed for ultra lightweight finesse fishing and uses a magnet moving mechanism that is mounted on the internal frame of the reel not the spool. This enables the spool to move with almost no friction. Adjustment can be made using an external dial.

G-Free Body:
G-Free Body technology has been developed to shift the reel's center of gravity closer to the rod. By moving the center of gravity closer to the angler's hand, the G-Free Body helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.

GigaMax Motor:
The GigaMax Motor utilizes a brushless design to provide high torque and high speed while maximizing durability.

HAGANE:
HAGANE is a Shimano reel design concept created to withstand continual use and extreme abuse. HAGANE is an innovation with built-in toughness and durability that works alongside Shimano's precision engineering. HAGANE is for all anglers.

HAGANE Body:
The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body rigidity and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing on the reel while fighting fish. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power, increasing efficiency through strength.

HAGANE Gear:
With amazing strength and durability, the HAGANE Gear is at the very heart of most Shimano reels. Shimano, through the application of state-of-the-art technologies, gives anglers the long-lasting smoothness and pleasure that is felt when anglers first use a reel, over and over again. No cutting work is applied to the teeth of the drive gear during fabrication, instead the entire surface is calculated in minute detail by special 3D-design and then formed by Shimano's cold-forging technology. The result is assured resilience. HAGANE Gear is the fruit of Shimano's inexhaustible pursuit for durability — the strength and power of forged metal continues to represent the fundamental concept of Shimano reels.

HD Gear:
The HD (High Durability) gear is a further improvement of the famous Shimano 3D Gears. Applying a special new coating results in a much stronger and smoother running gear system.

Heat Free System II:
Supports motor power with high heat dissipation. Ventilation openings are provided to allow heat inside the reel to escape to the outside, further enhancing heat dissipation.

Heatsink Drag:
The Heatsink Drag is a revolutionary structure located at the bottom of the spool that helps achieve overwhelming drag performance and improved durability. The Heatsink Drag dissipates heat outside of the spool by about 50% to reduce the drag-force drop that is caused by friction and heat. To further improve performance, the Heat Insulation Sheet dampens the heat flowing to the line on the spool and reduces line temperature by 30% for increased dependability during long fights.

HEG:
HEG consists of not only the gears, but also the frame, setplate and handle-side sideplate. First, we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer increased leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that incorporates the setplate and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we have eliminated flex in the drivetrain that causes normal gears to bind under pressure. By eliminating the fl ex and increasing the leverage, we are able to provide high-speed retrieves and deliver an incredible amount of torque, while maintaining the smooth, silent retreive Shimano reels are famous for.

Hi-Speed Drag:
Hi-Speed Drag is the fastest drag function ever featured on a Shimano reel. Only a very small turn on the drag knob will transition the drag settings from free-spool mode to fight mode.

Hypergear:
The precision engineered main Hypergear transmits more power from the handle to the rotor. Designed to exacting tolerances, it requires less eort but returns more retrieve playing torque with vastly reduced component wear.

Intelligent Digital Control (I-DC):
I-DC is a highly advanced digital control system which uses a micro-computer to adjust the resistance during the cast. The brake can be adjusted internally using a semi-automatic dial pre-set for different line types and then further adjusted externally with a 5 settings dial.

Intelligent Digital Control 4 (I-DC4):
The Intelligent Digital Control 4 braking system features four easy-to-use modes that can be set using the external dial for Max Distance, Braided/Monofilament line, Fluorocarbon line and Skipping. These four modes allow anglers to fish a wide variety of lures in any condition with minimal adjustments to the reel. I-DC4 reads various situation changes from casting to the arrival of the lure at the target spot by reading the spool's rotation and makes fine adjustments to the brake accordingly.

Intelligent Digital Control 5 (I-DC5):
Intelligent Digital Control 5 braking system allows anglers to fine-tune their reel to the perfect setting for each line/lure combination, achieving trouble-free and enhanced casting distance. I-DC5 has two sets of dial adjustments. With the inside dial, anglers can select the type of fishing line being used: Nylon Monofilament (N), Fluorocarbon (F) or Braided Line (PE). The outside dial adjustment is based on the lure type: 1. Big Lures (5/8 to 1 oz) with low air resistance, 2. Medium Lures (3/8 to 3/4 oz), 3. Small Lures (1/4 to 7/16 oz) with high air resistance or 4. Finesse Lures (3/16 to 1/4 oz). The final setting is the ‘AUTO’ function (A), letting the onboard DC decide the optimal brake setting. The I-DC5 braking system uses more magnets to assist braking compared to the previous systems. With the addition of a ring magnet, brake force can be applied more evenly and increases the maximum spool revolution by 12% at the start of a cast.

Infinity Drive (Spinning):
The Infinity Drive structure is an advanced structure that creates exceptionally light winding. The main shaft, which had previously been supported by the pinion gear, is now supported by a new and unique low-friction bushing that significantly decreases frictional resistance. In addition, the main shaft has undergone a proprietary surface treatment and special processing to drastically reduce rotational torque, constructing a reel that can actively wind even under heavy loads.

Infinity Drive (Casting/Conventional):
Infinity Drive technology is an advanced structure that produces more powerful and exceptionally light winding within conventional and low-profile reels. This innovative design supports the pinion gear with the spool shaft rather than supporting the pinion gear with a bearing on the spool side. Infinity Drive within low-profile and conventional reels also optimizes the support distance and pinion gear thickness to achieve high support rigidity so that anglers can actively wind under heavy loads without compromising gear strength.

InfinityLoop:
InfinityLoop technology delivers exceptional casting performance by drastically reducing friction on the line leaving the spool. Advancements in the internal structure and design extend the spool's oscillation to enable the spool to move up and down at an extremely low speed. This technology creates a precise winding pattern with less overlap that significantly reduces friction as the line leaves the spool during a cast. The result is smooth and exceptional casting performance, especially of light lures.

InfinityXross:
InfinityXross provides superior gear durability through industry-leading design and cutting-edge manufacturing technology. Advancements in the gear tooth design improve the surface contact and meshing between the drive gear and pinion gear. This revolutionary design efficiently distributes the load placed on the gear tooth surface across a wider area to prevent damage from stress points while significantly improving overall gear durability.

Instant Drag System:
Instant Drag allows the drag setting to be switched from free spool to a 'fight' setting by tightening the INSTANT DRAG lever on the front of the spool in only a few turns.

Long Stroke Spool:
The Long Stroke Spool has a longer stroke compared to conventional spool designs. This ultimately produces a smoother line lay during retrieval and translates into increased casting distance for anglers.

MagnumLite Rotor:
MagnumLite rotor technology leverages Shimano's proprietary carbon-infused CI4+ material to reduce overall rotor weight compared to standard rotor construction without sacrificing overall strength and durability. The MagnumLite Rotor enhances performance by reducing the initial startup inertia, providing effortless handle rotation for quick reactions and faster hook sets.

MGL (MagnumLite) Rotor:
The new MGL Rotor produces unprecedented light rotation within the MagnumLite family of spinning reels. Engineers redesigned the previously symmetrical MagnumLite rotor to be asymmetrical and relocated the bail arm mechanism to the opposite side of the line roller to improve the overall balance of the rotor. Combined with a lightweight line roller, titanium bail and optimum arrangement of rotor thickness, the new MGL rotor achieves up to a 14% reduction in rotational inertia to increase sensitivity to unprecedented levels. But the evolution of the MGL rotor is not limited to just reduced weight. The MGL rotor rigidity is up to 30% higher than conventional models and contributes to enhanced drag performance.

MGL (MagnumLite) Spool:
The lightweight MagnumLite (MGL) Spool design significantly reduces the moment of inertia at the beginning of a cast by roughly 10%. This allows anglers to experience greater casting distance by up to 20% as well as increased accuracy with a wider variety of lures.

MGL (MagnumLite) Spool III:
The MGL Spool III thoroughly pursues low inertia and features a narrow-shape design with a width of 19 mm that reduces inertia by about 15% compared to the second-generation MGL Spool with a width of 22 mm. But even with a reduced width, the MGL Spool III maintains line capacity with an outer diameter of 34 mm. The benefit of MGL Spool III: unparalleled casting performance.

MicroModule Gear:
The MicroModule Gear system creates a smooth retrieve by utilizing smaller teeth to increase the number of contact points between the drive gear and pinion gear. Ultimately, this produces a more efficient gear train with less of a gear feel.

MicroModule Gear II:
Shimano's exclusive manufacturing technology further advances MicroModule Gear II with a state-of-the-art gear-tooth surface design. The surfaces of the drive gear and pinion gear have been analyzed and updated from the ground up in Shimano’s pursuit of perfection to further improve the smooth gear feeling and reducing sound.

One-Piece Bail:
One-Piece Bail allows the line to travel unimpeded to the line roller. The seamless design reduces friction and decreases the chance of tangles or the line catching on the bail arm.

Parallel Body:
Parallel Body is designed to improve dynamic line flow from the reel to the first guide. On many reels the spool is aligned slightly upwards towards the rod blank, but reels with Parallel Body have the spool located at exactly 90° to the blank. The result: less line slapping on the blank as it travels towards the first guide during the cast, ultimately increasing performance.

Power AL:
Power AL is high rigidity aluminium the body material. This housing material emphasizes the concept to protect the reel’s interior from the extreme saltwater environment, creating a body with excellent toughness. This feature provides tremendous certainty in challenging saltwater fishing conditions, enabling anglers to focus on their big prey with confidence.

Power Roller:
The special grooved design of the Shimano Power Roller signifcantly reduces line twist and is a big advantage when using thin mono and braid.

Propulsion:
The spool has a special spool ring shape. This creates a rectifying effect on the line and realizes both suppression of line trouble and long casting performance.

QuickFire II:
For easy and fast one-handed casts, the line and trigger self-center and are within easy grasp of the angler's index finger.

Rapid Fire Drag:
Rapid Fire Drag is a very effective function in situations where anglers want to adjust drag force instantly. When the drag knob is rotated, the change in drag force is quicker to increase along the drag curve compared to traditional drags. This is especially effective for anglers utilizing light line: A high drag setting can be used for a hookset and then quickly decreased when fighting the fish.

Rigid Support Drag:
By strengthening the spool support of the main shaft, the play and fluctuation of the spool during drag operation are suppressed. The Rigid Support Drag allows smooth and consistent drag delivery, even under high load.

RigidCast:
RigidCast technology is a design philosophy that balances the strength and lightness of the main shaft, rotor and body to withstand the impact of extreme casting force. RigidCast minimizes the wobbling movement of the spool and the deflection of the main shaft and body during the initial moments of the cast. This design results in better line release timing while reducing the friction on the line leaving the spool to increase casting distance and accuracy.

S A-RB:
S A-RB bearings are put through the same process as Shimano’s A-RB bearings but feature shields on both sides of the bearings. These shields reduce the possibility of salt or sand inhibiting rotation of the bearing.

S-Compact Body:
S-Compact Body allows for all-day comfort and improved fishability by making the palming side plate up to 25% smaller than the A-Side plate.

S3D Spool:
S3D technology leads to significantly reduced spool vibration. By designing and constructing a balanced and uniform thin-wall aluminum spool, S3D creates an incredibly smooth feeling when casting and retrieving lures.

SilentDrive:
SilentDrive technology benefits from a total redesign of all functional parts focused on the drive gear, worm shaft and other parts. The goal: remove unnecessary noise and vibration. In doing so, the overall tolerances are improved to a micron level, ultimately creating an overall quieter and smoother reel operation.

SilentTune:
By applying slight pressure to the bearing holding the spool, SilentTune reduces the vibration of the bearing during high-speed rotation. This improves the quietness while casting and the rise of the spool rotation becomes even smoother.

Slow Oscillation:
The Slow Oscillation system evenly layers line onto the spool reducing the gaps between the line wraps that can cause unwanted friction or hang-ups during casting. By lying the line in an extremely tight parallel pattern, when a layer of line is wrapped on top of a lower layer of line there are no crevices or gaps for the upper layer to embed itself into.

Super Free Spool:
Super Free Spool eliminates friction on the spool shaft during the cast. Standard baitcasting reels are constructed in a way that when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion gear is freed and can actually drag on the spool shaft. This creates friction that can limit the length of a cast. But baitcasting reels with Super Free Spool are constructed so that the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing. When the clutch is disengaged in preparation for a cast, the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in perfect alignment. The result: zero friction is placed upon the spool shaft and enhances casting performance.

Super Slow Oscillation:
The spool moves very slowly forming almost parallel wraps of line.

Super Stopper:
Super Stopper is a one-way roller bearing that eliminates backplay for solid hooksets.

Super Stopper II:
Super Stopper II Anti-Revers uses a one way roller bearing that completely eliminates back-play in the reel. When the reel stops rotating, the rotor will stop immediately without any back-play. This makes the reel more reliable and provides the angler instant hook setting power, without losing energy because of back-play in the reel.

SVS Infinity:
Shimano's newest innovation in brake system technology, SVS Infinity, provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. With brake weights that use inner friction against the raceway during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for precision casting, especially when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides for quick, precise adjustments when anglers need to adjust to the conditions or when they switch baits.

SVS MD Tune:
The SVS MD Tune braking system provides fine-tuned adjustments and minimizes backlashes in harsh conditions. It also improves long castability and backlash resistance. It is designed for anglers who cast large swimbaits, glidebaits, and soft plastic paddle tail swimbaits. The SVS MD Tune uses a centrifugal system that can be adjusted with eight weights located on the spool. These weights are accessible underneath the non-handle side sideplate. There is also a handy external dial.

Thermo Adjust Drag:
Thermo Adjust Drag is a control function designed to suppress abnormal heat generation of the drag to maintain stable drag performance. If the drag slips while the motor of the electric reel is on, the gear will idle and cause an abnormal heat generation in the drag portion of the reel. As a way to suppress excess heat, the speed of the motor is automatically reduced by the Thermo Adjust Drag when the drag begins to slip.

Tri-Drag:
After extensive research, development and fine-tuning, Shimano have produced Tri-drag. An innovative 3-drag system giving you front, rear and Fightin' drag all on the same reel!

Varispeed:
Shimano's revolutionary Varispeed System consists of two specially designed gears. One is oval and the other a remarkable square shape! Only a special computer program developed by Shimano has been able to make these to shapes fit together perfectly – the result is perfect parallel line lay and improved fishing precision.

VariSpeed II:
Varispeed and the latest version called VariSpeed II oscillation system moves with two variable speeds to lay the line flat and smooth onto the spool. This provides troublefree, longer distant casts. Varispeed is found on budget and mid-priced Shimano reels.

VBS:
VBS uses centrifugal force, rather than magnets, to aid in controlling the cast. When turned on, the individual brake weights are forced outward at the beginning of the cast — when backlashes most often occur — to create friction that reduces the speed of the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure with which the brake weights contact the raceway lessens and allows the spool to continue spinning.

Waterproof Drag:
The Waterproof Drag contains rubber gaskets which are placed to protect the drag system. It seals the drag against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.

X Aero Wrap:
X Aero Wrap is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides superb uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast. X Aero Wrap is considered one of the best line lay systems in the world

X DRAG:
X-Drag is a mechanism that arranges the star drag attached to the inside of handle outside. When handle is close to the reel body side, it will not be stable in when winding. Recommended for those looking for a more comfortable double-shaft · round shape reel.

X PROTECT (Spinning):
For medium and small general-purpose spinning reels, which require lighter spinning, we focused on a non-contact structure that does not compromise the lightness of the spinning. In addition to conventional water-repellent treatment, a labyrinth structure that suppresses water penetration is combined to achieve high water-resistant performance despite the non-contact nature of the structure. It is used in the stopper bearing section and line roller section.

X PROTECT (Casting):
X PROTECT provides high-level water resistance to the inside bearing of drive gear shaft with waterproof construction.

X Rigid Bail:
The use of thicker titanium wire dramatically increased the rigidity and impact resistance of the bail arm. The nature of the metal makes the bail lighter and provides excellent corrosion resistance. A super-reliable bail system has been created by combining a one-piece bail wire, an SW barrier coat big roller reinforced with Diamond Like Carbon (DLC), and a high-strength hard coated arm cam.

X Rigid Gear:
Ultimate toughness was sought for the main gear to withstand the maximum drag needed when tackling offshore pursuits. The difference is obvious; the new main gear is thicker and stronger. This is a super tough gear designed for perfection in the most extreme situations.

X Rigid Handle:
The handle shaft is now integrated with a one-piece collar. This all-in-one structure enhances rigidity of the shaft casing, while in addition a new configuration is adopted for the mating surface with the handle shank. This allows the shaft casing to thoroughly and accurately encase the top of the handle shank, thereby increasing the rigidity of the entire handle.

X Rigid Rotor:
Considering the harsh environment of saltwater fishing, aluminium was selected for the rotor material because of its excellent durability, rigidity and corrosion resistance. Thorough attention was given to the thickness of every detail to create a strong rotor with assured toughness. While protecting the reel’s main body against impact during fishing and transportation, the rotor brings out the potential of all features such as X Tough Drag. The rotary inertia typical of aluminium generates the powerful and smooth performance of the new STELLA SW and effortlessly supports fishing with heavy load lures or while deep sea jigging.

X-Shield:
By providing dependable sealing structures and gaskets at 12 critical locations throughout the reel body, Shimano is able to create a water-resistant structure that is highly reliable and durable while ensuring that it can hold up when used in extreme saltwater conditions.

X-Ship:
X-Ship provides improved gear durability. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment with the drive gear. This allows the gears to stay in the same position under the heaviest loads. The added benefit of X-Ship technology is that friction between the spool shaft and gear are eliminated. This further benefits anglers with enhanced casting performance and casting distance of lighter lures.

X-Tough Drag:
X-Tough Drag features dramatically enhanced smoothness, control and toughness to anticipate the vigorous speed of bluefin tuna and giant trevally. X-Tough Drag further improves heat resistance and durability with construction that incorporates metal-only drag washers and abrasion-resistant carbon washers as well increased stability by supporting the spool from both the top and bottom.

Rod Technologies

Shimano's Rod Technologies are engineered to optimize your casting performance and give you the edge you need to land the big one. Discover the following innovations:

Aero-Joint:
On the male joints the Diamond finish allows your sections to not get stuck together but also prevents them from working apart in normal use. Additionally, the female joints have 1k weave & cross carbon weave to reduce the chances of sections cracking under the pressure of your elbow.

BIOFIBRE:
Shimano's unique BIOFIBRE construction improves overall rod strength and resistance to shock whilst producing increased lifting power in the tip.

Carbon Monocoque Grip:
Carbon Monocoque grip is a carbon-molded grip that is lightweight with high sensitivity, transferring even the smallest vibration to an angler’s hand. The Carbon Monocoque Grip increases sensitivity by 30% compared to traditional rod handles and utilizes a hollow structure that eliminates unnecessary parts of the rear grip to improve weight reduction and vibration transmission.

Carbon Shell Grip:
The Carbon Shell Grip is a next-generation grip structure made out of a hollow carbon structure. It contributes to the transmittance of vibrations to the hand. A lightweight, high-sensitivity grip that defies conventional wisdom.

Ci4+ Reel Seat:
CI4 is a Shimano original material reinforced with carbon fiber that is lighter and has a higher strength than conventional resin material. CI4+ is an advanced version of the original CI4 material and is 2.5x more rigid than its predecessor. The use of CI4+ for the reel seat increases sensitivity and reduces weight while also delivering remarkable rigidity for perfect reel fixation and better rod efficiency.

Diaflash:
DIAFLASH is a reinforced structure that prevents twiting of hte butt section in situations where high-intensity pressure is applied. With DIAFLASH construction, the outermost layer of the butt section is diagonally wrapped in opposite directions with carbon tape, which forms an array of "X" shapes.

ElastiGate:
The Elasti Gate system prevents additional line on the spool from slacking.

Excite Top:
Excite Top is a special tip that enhances the shake performance of lures and contributes to sensitivity. The tip section is tapered and slightly heavier at the top. This construction expands the swing width of the tip, enabling shaking with an automatic feeling. The movement seen by the eyes, and the sensitivity transmitted to the hands, is greatly improved.

Fossil Wood:
Fossil Wood is used on some Shimano reel seats. Created by compressing organic raw materials into a carbon like state using over 1000 degrees of heat, the resultant material is much stronger than wood and each component is both unique and resistant to moisture.

Full Carbon Monocoque Grip:
The Full Carbon Monocoque Grip is the evolution of the Carbon Monocoque Grip. A high-sensitivity grip made entirely of hollow carbon construction eliminates the use of EVA. This results in a very lightweight construction and enhanced sensitivity. Compared to the normal Carbon Monocoque Grip — which has 30% greater sensitivity over traditional handles — the sensitivity increases by another 28% with the Full Monocoque Grip.

GEN X:
The Gen X Concept was the result of three years of research into the perfect design cone for a pole. The Gen X poles are fully interchangeable with all Gen X poles.

GEN Z:
Gen Z is a more affordable version of Shimano Gen X and follows the same principles. It is available in two grades, All Round and EV, and in top 3, 4, and 5 sections.

GEOFIBRE:
GEOFIBRE is a naturally derived component that provides rigidity and high tensile strength when added to rods in the lower to mid-price rod band.

Hi-Power X:
Hi-Power X construction uses diagonally-wrapped carbon tape to form an array of "X" shapes on the rod blank's outermost layer. The width of the tape, its winding angle and the part of the rod being wrapped are fine-tuned according to the target fish species. This manufacturing process allows Shimano to adjust these wraps during construction for precise actions, enhanced overall strength and added twist resistance. In short, Hi-Power X construction delivers sharp and crisp rod control for the angler.

Hi-Power X Solid:
The flexible solid tip is reinforced with ultra fine carbon tape. This reinforcement suppresses power loss due to twisting without hindering the delicate bending of the solid tip. Cast accuracy, operability, and sensitivity has been dramatically enhanced by the application of HI-POWER X Solid.

High Pressure Carbon (HPC):
Shimano High Pressure Carbon is a process which creates stronger, more responsive blanks. Pressure is applied to the blank surface during curing (heating) which evenly distributes the resin through the carbon fibre matrix. The result is a much stronger, more consistent performance and improved responsive.

Low Resin Carbon (LRC):
Shimano Low Resin Carbon uses less resin to hold the carbon fibres together. This results in lighter more responsive blanks. Low Resin Carbon is usually used on lightweight rods where balance and action are very important.

Muscle Carbon:
Muscle Carbon is a high-performance material that reduces the gaps between fibres, by bundling carbon filaments together at a higher density than traditional carbon sheet. This reduces the amount of resin need to fill the gaps in the carbon matrix during the curing process.

Muscle Loop:
Muscle Loop is formed using a spiral carbon tape, wrapped on the outside of the blank, which reduces the natural 'spine' of the blank and also improves strength. This helps prevent the blank from distorting under extreme pressure.

Nanopitch:
Shimano’s Nanopitch manufacturing method enables fine-pitch and high-precision wrapping of the molding tape during the blank baking process. Nanopitch technology tightens the tape to the extreme and provides uniform pressure, increasing the circularity of the rod and ultimately improving overall rod strength.

Nanosheet:
Nanosheet is a multiple carbon sheet construction, which incorporates Nano resin distribution technology. The resin, which holds the different carbon fibres together, is distributed more evenly across the carbon fibres, resulting in a stronger and more light weight rod, with less potential defects and weak spots.

Optional Balance Weight:
The Optional Balance Weight enables customised rod balancing to suit your preference.

Power Cork:
By applying a special surface treatment Shimano succeeded in making natural cork more durable. Power cork is tactile, ergonomic, lightweight and attractive yet it will not absorb moisture, bacteria and degrade or age cosmetically. Being washable it will last for years and still look like new.

Reinforced Joint System:
Special Shimano reinforced carbon joints prevent premature wear and increase total joint strength and durability.

Safety Zone:
The Safetyzone is made up of conical bands, located at the bottom of selected kits. Inspired by the Bamboo plant which uses bands for stem strength, the Safetyzone improves compression strength in the areas that receive the most stress when landing fish.

Screw Lock Joint:
The Screw Lock Joint achieves increased joint strength and ease of detachment by special machining methods. When twisting the rod sections as it is twisted like a screw, the fixing force increases and the sections are more securely locked on the joint section. When unscrewing, the sections can be easily unlocked by twisting in the opposite direction.

Shimano Alignment System (SAS):
S.A.S. is a system to optimise blank action. During the production process the spine of the blank is marked. When assembling the parts according to the marks a constant action is achieved.

Shimano Dynamic Response (SDR):
The unique SDR construction process eliminates any spine forming during manufacture, meaning the blank action remains uniform, regardless of which way the rod is bent.

Shimano Travel Concept (STC):
Shimano Travel Concept (S.T.C.) is a series of multi-piece fishing rods. The rods are designed for anglers who travel frequently and have short pack down lengths.

Slide-n-Grip:
Groundbreaking innovation from the Shimano rod stable, simply custom position the reel exactly where you like and then fi x rigidly into place for total security. Slide 'n Grip can be found on various spinning or surf rods.

Softube Top:
The Softube Top provides the sensitivity of an ultra fine solid carbon tip with the lightness of a hollow construction. Softube Top construction can be found on models where sensitivity and finesse are both important requirements. The smooth, seamless action of Softube Top offers the angler an unrivalled experience for bite detection and fish-playing performance.

Spiral X:
Through its exclusive lightweight structure, Shimano's patented Spiral X construction enhances catching power for anglers. Spiral X construction consists of three layers: a middle layer of vertical fibers as well as inner and outer layers, both comprised of carbon tape that tightly winds the blank diagonally in opposite directions. By using this carbon tape in place of a conventional horizontal fiber sheet, Spiral X achieves enhanced compression rigidity and increased torsional rigidity without adding extra weight. This in turn facilitates instant power transmission for precise casting and fish fighting.

Spiral X Core:
Spiral X Core is Shimano's newest and most advanced blank construction technology. By integrating Spiral X carbon tape construction with Toray Nanoalloy® technology, Spiral X Core constructed blanks benefit from up to 10% more torsional rigidity and up to 15% more compressional rigidity than rods built with Spiral X. Shimano is unique to the market by applying by high-strength carbon tape with this unique and patented Spiral X construction.

Steady Cast:
Steady Cast is a production process which produces a spineless blank construction that eliminates sideward vibrations during the cast. This results in less friction and better casting performance.

Super Slik:
Super Slik finish delivers effortless shipping in all weathers.

TAFTECT:
TAFTEC was reconsidering the formulation of the materials and the manufacturing method, the strength of carbon solid tips is drastically improved. Sharp and high sensitivity compared to TAFTEC α, that is the characteristic point.

TAFTECT α (Alpha):
TAFTEC Alpha tips utilise a pre-stretched T-3500 directional yarn fibre with low resin saturation. This directional alignment of the fibres in the solid tip results in much less damage during the grinding process and results in a spineless construction. In tests it has been shown to be much stronger, lower in weight, faster in action and more sensitive.

TAFTECT Infinity:
TAFTEC Infinity realizes 3 times the winding strength and 5 times the winding amount of our conventional solid tips. It is a high intensity solid tip that surpasses the strength and sensitivity of Taftec α.

Ti-Lite:
Titanium is a material with a big reputation for strength combined with minimal weight. So where better for Shimano to begin our quest to produce rod guides of a quality never seen before? It's taken time, and it's taken significant investment. Ti-Lite Guides will adorn several new Shimano rods, and we know that our customers will appreciate the reduced overall weight, improved action and casting performance they bring.

Twin-tip:
The Twintip concept is a versatile, multisectioned range which combines easy transport lengths with a Twintip concept that eectively delivers two rods in one. Models have three common sections (Handle, Butt and Middle) and separate special taper tips. The single fast taper tip fits onto the middle section to produce a shorter more powerful rod, whilst the use of the slow taper tip (plus additional section) produces a longer and more responsive action.

Twist-Control:
Twist-Control is an anti-twist blank construction process which is a big benefit when fighting huge fish with big game rods.

Ultimate Blank Design (UBD):
Ultimate Blank Design is a design technology that carefully selects the target material from over 100 different types and places it in place in each section of the tip, belly, and butt of a blank. All material is in it's right place to realize the ideal rod action condition. It is a new design structure that realizes weight reduction while maintaining strength and power.

Ultra Sound Sanding System:
Originally developed for the Technium pole and now available on the majority of Shimano’s poles, this unique process results in a finish that is silky smooth for almost frictionless shipping and unshipping, in both hot and wet conditions. It also provides great grip for breaking down sections and playing fish.

Variable Brake System (VBS):
VBS uses centrifugal force, rather than magnets, to aid in controlling the cast. When turned on, the individual brake weights are forced outward at the beginning of the cast — when backlashes most often occur — to create friction that reduces the speed of the spool. Once the spool speed begins to slow, the pressure with which the brake weights contact the raceway lessens and allows the spool to continue spinning.

Vibra Spot:
Ergonomic sculpting of the front grip to reveal the blank gives a much better grip on the rod for casting and playing action, more importantly putting your finger on the pulse to feel each twist, turn and lunge of fish on the end of the line. The Vibra Spot on rods is extremely effective when using braided reel line.

X GUIDE:
The X guide was born from the viewpoint to bring out the potential of blanks to the full. Supporting the guide rings of the tip part is a one-piece structure frame molded with the latest material by 3D technology. Its beautiful shape combines strength with the calculated inclination angle and three-dimensional structure to suppress line entanglement. The tip guides are light and small. In the butt part we have the Aero Titanium X guide which contributes to casting feeling and casting distance. X guide is Shimano's original high performance guide which fused lightness, trouble less, casting performance to higher dimensions.

XGT-7:
XGT-7 is an improved version of the tried and trusted Shimano XT-7 composite material. Used on some of the newest mid-priced reels XGT-7 is lightweight and stiff.

XT Carbon:
XT Carbon is used throughout the Shimano rod range. The number following the XT (XT100), denotes the quality of carbon fibre used. The higher the number, the stronger the carbon. Where different types of carbon are combined to create the required action both numbers will be shown (XT60/40).

XT-7:
XT-7 is the original Shimano composite reel material. Used on mid-priced and budget reels and spools XT-7 is reliable, robust and lightweight.
