Scientists. Those guys want to take credit for everything. Well, while they're sitting around patting themselves on the back about ibuprofen, we'll keep making the world a better place by developing new rods. Like the Mojo Surf rods. Built from premium SC2 graphite, these bad boys are topped off with specialized, weight-saving surf guides with zirconium ring that sends casts off into the stratosphere. High-performance surf rods at a great value for folks who put it all on the line.

It's good
I've used this rod for over a year now, and I do like it a lot. I mostly use it as my bait fishing stick, but have used it for heavier plugs, and metal as well when the surf is rough, and casting distance is a factor. It casts the range good enough, but gets a little soft towards the higher end of the rating... I've thrown 8oz on it before, but I wouldn't lean into the cast as I'd do with lighter loads on there.... That's not really a negative as the baits weight does put it slightly over the rods stated rating. A couole things I didn't like was the fact that purchased the rod as new, used it, and later found the bottom, and top section to have different serial numbers on them, making the great warranty this company offers useless. The different numbers lead me to believe that the rod I recieved may of been a return, a factory mix up, or one of the refurbished rods they sell at a discount. Another thing I noticed was that the reel seat was a little loose, and that it did seem to loosen up on its own even when tightened down before heading out. I have a penn ssv7500, and when a big fish is on, I can feel the reel flexing in the hoods of the reel seat, and that is not a good feeling at all. I ended up having to use hockey tape for added support and security.
ProsOne piece feel with a 70/30 split. Throws the range adequately with Plenty of backbone to pull big fish out of heavy current, and rips.
ConsReel seat loosens up... Seems to hold some reels better than others.

Great Rod for a Nice Price
Was able to use this Rod a few times this spring and summer, most recently on a family vacation in the Outerbanks, NC. Rod performed great as i had it paired with a Shimano Ultra 5500. Great casting action and i was able to land a few nice Blues in the Carolina Surf.

Great rod at a great price!
I was pretty impressed with this rod. I paired it with a Slammer 3 5500 to have as a backup. But after using for a trip it has become my main bucktail rod. It loads really well and launches jigs. It's also a pretty good pencil popper rod. Only complaint is that it doesn't have a butt cap. That's a quick, cheap fix though. Also the two pieces of this rod are not equal lengths. It's a 70/30 split. Doesn't bother me but figured I'd mention it.
ProsLoads/casts well. Light enough.
ConsNo butt cap.

I just got this rod and paired with the vs 100 x series. Amazing combo. it became my favorite so far for flounder fishing. very light. feels very well built. I am able to feel the bites and where my weight/sinker is. casting on windy conditions was not a problem at all. I am going to try it for blues on jetty just for a test.
Prosvery light, well constructed, i feel like my casting has improved. very sensitive
Consreel seat feels cheap. it plastic and i am afraid it could break down the road. (I can be wrong) missing butt cap. (just order one from mudhole - 1'' diameter)

First, this rod performs well in the surf throwing bucktails and poppers in the listed lure rating. With that said, I wouldn't throw more than a 2.5 oz lure. Second, I have the rod paired with a penn clash 5000, spooled with 30 lb power pro, and I must say, it balances well and is very light in my hands. For a 9 ft. rod it can cast a city block. Lastly, if you have any reservations about purchasing this rod, don't. It will meet and possibly exceed your expectations.
ProsDesign and performance
ConsDoes not come with rod butt (3/4" diameter) for using as a cane/walking stick while in the surf. No worries. Easy fix. I purchased one from mudhole (arbc-19) for less than $2 plus s/h for a total of less than $5.

Great Rod!!
Out of all my current rods this one is my favorite it very light yet still has the backbone to pull in some big snooks and reds
ProsGuides are very strong and light
ConsThe butt end shape of the rod makes the rod slips easily when it's leaning against the wall or something

Great Rod
I started out the the 10' Mojo and liked it so much that I got the 10'6 for throwing heavier plugs. It had slightly less back bone for setting hooks than I thought, but handled lures up to 5oz with no problem. The Mod fast action works really well on jetties and the guide system seems to improve casting.
ProsCasting, action, well priced.

Purchased 10'6" 1-4 OZ model. While I have to admit rod is pretty nice, please be aware there is a made in Mexico Sticker on it. I thought St. Croix rods were made in US. We need to keep the jobs here.

Great 8nBait Rod
The rod will definitely cast the 16oz it is rated for, but the sweet spot is only about 6oz. The action requires you to load the rod progressively through the casting arch.
ProsThe rod can cast 10nbait easily
ConsThe rod just handles lighter weight (6nbait) better. The guide's eyelets pop out to easily.

Would have given the rod five stars but I find it difficult to conveniently fit in the truck. The two piece rod breaks down to an approximate 70 / 30 ratio.

I am extremely pleased with this rod. It's very comfortable to use, good action and great backbone. I primarily use it with an SSV6500BLS and its a good match. It's handled fish up to 20lbs for me. I highly recommend this to any angler looking for a quality rod at a reasonable price.

Another great St Croix product
Purchased this rod as an additional surf rod for my son. Upgraded to the Mojo series from the Triumph series and saw an immediate difference in its distance casting performance. Used this rod this past weekend and landed several fat stripers. Very light rod and allows you to cast for long periods without fatigue. Highly recommend this rod!

Great Value
The rod is built well, good balanced and quality components, nice gripe and the deep purple color of the blank is great. The SC2 graphite is decievingly light of the rod's size. I do not care for the tiptop used and the epoxy on a couple of the guide feet is a bite heavy. The rod shipped out the same day and was packed extremely well. TD Customer service is great.

Good Surf Rod
Have been using this for the past 2 years and am fairly happy with it. Recently the top guide had the ring come out of it which i was not happy with. Wish i got the 10'6 for the little tip but i use it fluking, bassing and even pulling blackfish out of the rocks. Great overall rod and would def buy this series again...just the larger size

Good rod
I bought this as a complement to the '" Mojo I have for fishing the south shore of LI. So far, I've only been ale to test cast it, but seems like a winner. I've tried SS darter, bottles and SP minnows on it and it cast them all well. I haven't tried anything 3 oz or heavier so I can't comment on that. I also haven't caught any fish yet so I can't comment on that either. I really like my 9' Mojo so I'm optimistic that this one will be great as well.

Outstanding rod for the money
The St Croix MSS90MM2 is probably one of the best overall plugging rods for the money. Though made in Mexico, it still retains much of the St. Croix quality you would expect. As many know, the Daiwa SP minnow is a rather popular lure in the surf, and this rod excels in throwing said lure. This 3/4-4 model has a softer tip than its 1-4 brethren, giving you some added sensitivity with swimming plugs, as well as the capability to throw lighter payloads for distance. The overall fit and finish of this rod is excellent, and the offset ferrule design helps give the rod a "one piece feel". Aesthetically speaking, I'm kinda digging the whole purple thing St. Croix is rockin' with the mojo. I think the biggest asset this rod offers is the value aspect. You get a good, quality fishing rod for the money here.
ProsGood rod for the money. Softer tip helps cast lighter payloads, and gives added sensitivity. While significantly cheaper in price than the legend surf, this rod is not cheaply built. You get your money's worth with this rod.
ConsMy only negative with this rod would be the 4oz rating. This rod will comfortably handle 1 - 2 oz lures, 2 1/2 being the heaviest I would go on regular basis. At 3 oz, this rod really begins to develop that "I can but I'd rather not" kinda feel. I would definitely not throw 4 oz payloads with this rod.

Best value around
It's as close as I could get to that magical all-around plugging rod from anything out there. It literally tosses everything I like to have in my plug bag from sp minnows to large poppers and swimmers to 3oz tins. I took my time making this purchase and I have no regrets.

Great rod for Long Island Sound
I bought this rod based on the recommendation of an acquaintance. What a great decision! My previous rod felt dead and was too heavy be comparison. As other reviewers have mentioned, the rod casts lures like a rocket. I'm very happy with the rod and am toying with an 11 foot version.

Plug Cannon
The range on this rod is sick, paired with my van staal 250 and 20# fireline I am reaching the spots that I want. With fireline or powerpro super slick this rod has sensitivity to feel lure vibration. I mean I can feel whether the tail on my tsunami sand eel are wagging or whether its been fouled. They are nice and stiff to impart action.
ProsI fish four nights a week, wetsuit surf fishing around Aquidneck Island and this rod sees alot of action when the conditions warrant the muscle and I need to get the range.
ConsThis is a casting rod and great rod for working baits. In terms of fighting fish you have to make sure you set the drag slightly lighter so you don't pull hooks out.

Wonderful Rod!
I just received this Surf Spinning Rod, and I am in love with it! It is by far the best rod I own. Surpasses any of my Laminglass rods, by far. When I first receivedit, I thought I goofed up the order and ordered a castiung rod, based on the small and narrow guide just above where it pulls apart. However, the wonderful staff at TD set me straight on it. Very quickly I might add! This spinning rod has very narrow guides in order to achieve a longer cast. I can report that it does in fact make for longer casts, with ease! Which is great for me because I am an orthopedic nightmare! I paired this rod up with my Van Staal 200 with 20LB Power Pro. I was only able to manage hooking 2 legal size Fluke (NY) since owning it. However, it has a nice bend to it, and is very light. Also has very good balance with the VS200. Although, I am probably going to buy a VS150 and use it with this rod in the near future. Also plan on buying a 11' Mojo Surf for my VS 275 before the fall run. After using Laminglass Rods Primarily for years, I now believe I will be buying St. Croix from here on out. I own other St. Croix Rods for other applications. This is my first Surf Rod. Laminglass Rods are very good, and have served me well over the years. I just now prefer St. Croix. They seem to keep improving on their products more so. You will be very happy with this rod.

Excellent Rod
Used this for the first time this weekend. Rod perfomred as advertised, which was excellent. I threw clams with 3 and 4 oz lead. Rod is very easy to handle. This is my second St. Croix rod and these are the only rods for me going forward!
ProsStrong, lightweight, easy to throw bait with.
ConsThis is minor and an adjustment. The butt end of the rod is shorter that the top half. When is confined spaces, like your basement or garage, be careful as this is a bit awkward. However, since I plan on being outdoors much more than indoors, this shouldn't be an issue.

Great Rod!!!
When i got this rod back in December i thought it was going to be to heavy to throw lures with all day. Well was i wrong,( I matched it up with the Penn Spinfisher V 6500 bail-less reel I wrote a review on this to) it took all of five minutes of me casting with it to know that this rod it worth every penny. Great rod for the money
I have the 10'6" Mojo spinning version rated at 3/4-4 and have been very happy with it's performance so far. With it's moderate action it loads well and I can cast plugs from 3/4-3 without any issue. I think the sweet spot on this rod is 2.5oz though. It absolutely launches plugs in this range. For a little over 200 bucks it's a great rod that performs as well as rods much more expensive. The warranty is great too!

Great rod for value
I’ve used the 8ft from boat and surf for three seasons now. For the price it’s a great choice that won’t break the bank. Casting distance is great as it’s a braided line only design. The blank is light and sensitive also. Only concerns are the reel seat always seems to come loose and there’s not butt cap. The blank action is marked mod. fast, but it seems closer to fast. It is also backed by a 5yr warranty from St. Croix.

Great rod, can cast all day
I've been fishing for 30+ years and never spent the money on a quality rod. I've had a couple custom rods over the year but never a premium rod so I figured I'd treat myself seeing that I'm really getting into this surf fishing since moving to long island this year. As soon as I felt this rod I knew it would be love at first cast. Cast great, feels good in your hands and handles fish no problem although most of the big fish moved out by the time I got it.

Excellent Rod! I have a Penn Battle 5000 paired with this Rod and they Balance well. The reel has 50lb braid and the setup casts a mile. I plugged 2-3oz lures and didn't feel fatigued at all. Some fisherman may not approve of a 2 piece rod for plugging, the butt section measures 45 1/2 inches ( over 3 1/2 feet) and the top section measures at 92 1/2" (almost 8 feet). Most rods at 11 feet would have 2 - 5 1/2 foot sections each. (50/50) . I like the idea of the top section being further down the rod. How many of us have had Rods come apart in the middle? Also threw chunks (bunker) in the surf of IBSP NJ and it handled well.

Incredible Rod
I bought this rod a little over a year ago and have used it quite a bit between Block Island and Sandy Hook. By far the best surf rod I've owned. I cast lures between 1-3.5oz and regardless of the weight I'm able to cast way farther than the rod I replaced. I love the grip on this rod as well. I find it to be a lot nicer than cork tape for extended casting and is more durable as well. Also, compared to similar quality rods from Lamiglas or G. Loomis the price is way better

I want to buy this pole and also a ten foot one (St. Croix TSRS100M4 Triumph Surf Travel Rod or Penn CARSFII2050S10 Carnage II Surf Spinning Rod ) for light surf casting (lures between 1.5 and 3.0 oz max) for medium size blues (cocktails) and stripers and also long casts with bucktails for fluke. I'm undecided about the reel size. I have some 4000 reels (Pt smoke inshore and Penn conflict), but I think they would be too light. Do you agree?
