Uneven line spool
April 13, 2021
I spooled this new reel with 50 lbs Daiwa JBraid and it did spool unevenly. I owned a Daiwa Saltist 4500h but never had a problem like this. Line for this new reel is tapered more in the front and i have to put the rubber shins that comes with the package to even out. It is quite disappointing for a new reel to encounter a problem like this.

Perfect surf reel with spending a fortune
September 21, 2020
Decided to try Daiwa for Surf fishing. Have used Daiwa reels for years for freshwater trout ,especially steelhead and the drags are superb. Found the same to be true with thus Saltist. Excellent build quality, and super smooth.
ConsWouldnt mind it being lighter but with a 10ft or large rod feels just right!

Between the Eliminator, BG, and Saltist. I had put the BG over the Saltist until I caught my first King MAC. Definitely smoother. The reeling is faster. Definitely worth listening to the drag. I’m in love with this reel..I have 7 bg’s, 3 eliminator, and 1 Saltist and I need
ProsThe drag is amazing
Cons$$$ very pricey.

Very nice reel!
March 16, 2020
One of my "run and gun" reels for offshore fishing. My two others are 6000. Really nice reel with a solid drag system. Great line capacity too (braid). Use this reel mainly as one of my run and gun reels for offshore fishing. This being my largest spinning reel for that purpose. Good solid drag as well as great line capacity too. I've fished with this reel for about three years now on a regular basis with a maintenance schedule and never ever had any negative issues with it. And a really great price for what you're getting especially compared to the price of other reels in the same category. Highly recommended!
ProsGreat price, great line capacity and a solid drag system.
ConsI usually can think of something negative to say but honestly can't with this reel. Buy it!

Absolute banger

I ordered 2 of the saltist 8000's and I love them. They are super smooth and an absolute banger of a reel. They hold a massive amount of line and the drag is flawless. They get the job done!!

To make a better version of one of the best budget reels on the market the Saltist will be by your side for a long time wether you’re plugging or jigging this thing is built like a bg but with better components. If you already own the BG you know what I mean

Awesome reel for the money

I only use this reel at the canal, its extremely smooth and reassured you that its sturdy with every rotation of the handle. That ratio is also perfect for using lures. Definately would get another one.

I bought this for the fast retrieve when I go down to Cabo. Seeing that I live in NY there was no way I was going to spend the money on a Stella or Saltiga if it is going to only be used maybe a week out of the year.

will the size 5000 work well for a 7ft fenwick saltist rod?

I'll be fishing from a boat for striped bass in may on the cape

in Massachusetts.

1 Answer
Diawa reels usually run one size bigger then reels like shimano or Penn. I would probably go with a 3000, or 4000.

Saltist 6500 is a great size for jigging and popping. Depends on the rod but that size is generally great and not too big!

I'm looking to pair this with my 10' Tsunami Airwave TSAWSS1002MH and St. Crioix Mojo MSS110MHMF2. I know these reels are sized bigger than Shimano which is what I normally use. It will be used for surf fishing using bait or lures, targeting big fish. I'm looking for long casting, high line capacity on 50-60lb braid and higher drag, but would like to have it as light as possible....LOL!! I know these reels aren't the lightest. Debating on this or BG model. Any suggestions?
1 Answer
Size for size the Daiwa BG and the Daiwa Saltist weight wise are exactly the same. I would recommend the Saltist 6500, it's not going to be light but line capacity and a strong drag it does have.

Why would I consider a Saltist reel over much less expensive BG Saltwater?  The specs on weight, drag and capacity are identical. Thanks.
1 Answer
The Saltists are more durable and have the mag seal on the line roller and main shaft. Overall, they are a beefed up BG that will ultimately be more durable.

How would the Saltist 8000 pair with a Proteus 7’6” hvy/fast for casting poppers  to smaller tuna(less than 150 pounds)?
1 Answer
The 8000 would be big for that rod. If you want to go with the Proteus, I would go with the PRTB80HXHFS or the PRTB80XHFS, which are the 8' models.

I'm interested in the 5000 and 6500 for tarpon and sharking here in Florida. Will the drag burn out on those long runs?
1 Answer
These reels are very well designed and have sealed ATD Carbon Drag system, these should hold up pretty well to these fish, I would recommend going up a size for the Shark fishing applications though, that increased line capacity usually comes in handy with these beasts

Which rod (preferably 2 pieces) would you recommend to match Daiwa saltist 5000 reel? TSAWSS-902XH and STIN76HFS rods look good. I'm preparing for shore fishing (from the reef edge, probably 50 lb braided line and 60-100 g lures) for 10+ kg GTs. Would you change this setup?
1 Answer
Fishing from a boat your going to want to go with the STIN76HFS. Fishing from a pier or the shore lines the TSAWSS-902XH would be a good option. Both can be used with the size braid your using. The overall better balance that you could get would be with the Tsunami rod.
