Incredible Bargain for a Quality Rod
June 19, 2021
I purchased the Okuma RA-S 1002MH in April, 2021. First, props to Tackle Direct on the way it ships its rods. The rod came is an incredible sturdy, almost indestructible tube, a tube you can keep and use as shipping container, if you ever want to air travel. It's a great shipping job, Incredible packing, and care by Tackle Direct.
Pros
  • As for the rod, it is very light and fun to cast. The quality is superb. I bought it for surfcasting bucktails out on the Gulf, along Galveston beaches. With the Okuma 6000 reel and this rod, you wont find a lighter surf rig. This rig appears to be a great set-up for bank fishing in Texas rivers and lakes--it's not an over-kill and you can make a lot of cast without developing arm fatigue.
Cons
  • I've never had such a light pole, and of course, the doubt, because it is so light, whether this rod can bring in a 15-20 pound fish is there. But, I paired it with a Okuma Long Cast 6000 reel, and it should be able to hand the stress.
  • However, I should have bought the Okuma HD 10' 6". That extra six inches may just give me an extra 10 feet in terms of distance. No a problem as Christmas is around the corner.

Pleasantly surprised!

Bought the Okuma Rockaway 12ft MH as a backup to my Daiwa Coastal SP. Needless to say my Coastal SP is now my backup to the Rockaway. This rod casts just as good and is much lighter, which is helpful on those 1000 casts for one fish days. For me, 2oz. lures seemed to be the sweet spot and would launch them effortlessly, but it also handles 1-1.5 oz. quite well.
Pros
  • Light weight, durable and great price

Very good rood for surf fishing. Very light but strong. Cast a mile with no efforts. Very suitable for mid-size reels. Perfect as a light tackle also considering what is cost.
Pros
  • Weight, durability, casting distance, craftsmanship

Great Value as West Coast Surf Striper Rod
July 6, 2020
I purchased the 10' model while it was on sale and it has proven to be a great rod in the surf. I mostly throw SP minnows, but it easily handles heavier Mickey's. Great back bone and sensitive tip.

12' 3/4-3oz and 1-4oz models
August 12, 2019
I love both of these rods. They are thin, light yet powerful and very sensitive. I can feel every bounce, bite and bump. I first bought the 3/4-3 for casting smaller bucktails, poppers, tins and such. I than bought the 1-4 just before the 2019 season, because of how much I like the medium power rod, for throwing heavier poppers, darters, metal lips and light to medium bait/bottom fishing. Last season I had the medium paired with a slammer 3 5500 and thats was a great set up. This season Ive paired up both rods with my conflict ii lc 5500 and 20lb braid and the distance is unbelievable. Okuma makes some great surf rods and I have a few of theirs now. I highly recommonded both them and their surf rods.
Pros
  • Light, thin, strong, plenty of back bone, very sensitive, great for 5/8 and 3/4oz bucktails on the 3/4-3, to 3 and bait for the 1-4
Cons
  • None yet

For the Price, It Rivals the Daiwa SP Coastal Surf Rod, MOJO and Tsunami Airwave
July 31, 2019
I was skeptical of this rod at first but I am no more. This rod whips SP minnows further than Daiwa's SP Coastal, and it has a phenomenal backbone and rigid tip. It is comfortable, very light weight and a canon. I paired it with a BG8000 and 40lb J-Braid and this is a great combo.
To find a 12ft rod that handles 1-4oz this well is hard to find, let alone in this price point. I have had 0 wind knots as well. I recommend this rod, just go to the store, put it in your hands an you'll know how well it feels and casts. The sweet spot is 1-3 oz lures. However, this can cast 1/2 oz spoons incredibly far.
Pros
  • Casts Far
  • Durable
  • Inexpensive
  • Rivals higher priced rods

Snapped it within the first week. However the feel and response is quite well.
Pros
  • Really light
  • Responsive
  • Good price
Cons
  • Snapped within the first week
  • Not recommended for lures more than 1 1/2 ounce on MH models although it rated well over that.
