Penn Squall Lever Drag 2-Speed Reels offer great fish fighting features. In addition to the Quick-Shift 2-speed system, the Squall Lever Drag's graphite frame and sideplates house tough, machined stainless steel main and pinion gears that are drilled out for weight reduction. Four shielded stainless steel ball bearings deliver smooth cranking power and the Dura Drag system eliminates hesitation and surging under extreme drag settings.

The spool is made from forged and machined aluminum with the added touch of Line Capacity Rings to keep the angler in the know at a glance on how much line remains on the spool. The double dog ratchet anti reverse eliminates back-play in the handle and is twice as strong as a typical single dog system.
  • Lightweight graphite frame and sideplates
  • Forged and machined aluminum spool
  • Stainless steel main and pinion gear
  • Dura-Drag washers virtually eliminate hesitation, even under extreme drag settings
  • Quick-Shift 2-speed system
  • 4 Shielded stainless steel ball bearings
  • Double-dog ratchet anti-reverse
  • Line Capacity Rings

Not the biggest fan of graphite reels
You probably won't be able to see it, but graphite reels do flex, and every time it does it throws the gears out of alignment slightly, causing them to wear faster. A graphite reel will break before a machined aluminum one will for sure. I know graphite is extremely strong, but not in this case because graphite flexes just like in poles. Aluminum reels and even graphite fishing reels and rods generally last a while, but i would put my money on them. Having cousins with graphite reels complaining how when the caught a fish big enough, that the reel seized because of gears being out of place and eventually needed new internals quite fast.. This all being out of a few years use, but Nonetheless, much earlier problems than with an aluminum reel.

Bought these reels after many months of researching reels. I wanted a reel that can stand up to punishing fishing but on a tight budget. On May 17th 2015 fishing trip off NC coast My son hooked up with a 300lb Shark and did not give her a chance to rest. From hook to landing was 5 mins. The reel did not flinch, also he forgot to shift down to low gear dragged the beast in using high gear. I have my reels spooled with 100Lb Berkley trilene big game line. The only line I swear by. I have used many brands of reels over the years now i only own PENNS. The penn reels have not let me down yet. If your on a tight budget and want a good large reel these are it.

I bought a 2 speed LD Squall when they first come out Just as a backup reel but after a bit of playing around with it I decided to try it out,
far out was I surprised.
This thing is better than other game reels twice its price!
It has the low down power to put the crunch on Marlin that don't give in and also has speed when they want to follow and rapid winding is required to prevent a hook out situation,
Ive used mine on Black Marlin and I absolutely love it,
Unbelivible valus for Money, Penn have realy outdid themselves!

Paired the 50 model with a Daiwa's Sealine boat rod SLB56XXHF. It was a perfect setup, fished tuesday out in Chicken Canyon, 65 miles south east of NY. Boated a 80+lb Bluefin, without any problems, besides operator's back hurting. haha holds a ton of line as well, more than shimano's TLD. Surely a TLD killer...
ProsGreat reel for the price Holds a ton of line! i spooled 700y of 100# PP with 200+y of 80# Berkley Big game. Smooth as a Champ.
ConsIt's not metal?

Wow. You have to love the technology.
I have a couple of Penn 114's and was looking for something with more line capacity.
I have been shark fishing from the beach and wanted to get the baits out further.
I got a lot more than I expected with the Squall. The line capacity is good but I am now sold on the lever drag.
The two speed is an added bonus as well as the light weight.
Count me as another happy Penn (and Tackle Direct) customer. This is my sixth Penn saltwater setup.

Hello, I am considering the squall 2 Speed 50vsw for land based shark fishing in Galveston TX. I would like to grab one of these reels and spool it with approximately 500 yds of 100lb braid and top-shot with 50-80lb mono. I'm targeting sharks within the 5-6' range but my concern is whether the reel can handle sustained drag pressure between 20-30lbcs for extended fights. I wish I could afford Penn's Internationals, but just am incapable at this point in time and am hoping the graphite series is a good alternative until such as time as I could pick up an 80vsw.

The reel should be able to handle that, but as you know high drag settings like that will put wear on any reel. The reel should be fine to handle the sharks, but I doubt that it would last forever. Until you get something like a VSW, I think that this would be a good option.

What does the W stand for in the model numbers?
1 Answers
The "W" Stand for wide. While these reels are not offered in a narrow version they add the "W" to show that they are the same body size as a Penn International series 30VSW and 50VSW.
