Love the new reel! Second cast, I was rewarded with an 8lb blue fish. Many bass have been caught with it and it performed flawless. Perfect pairing with my new surf rod!?
ProsA little lighter in weight than last reel

Great reel
May 26, 2019
The only reels I ever buy anymore for inshore and light offshore use. Reasonably priced with the added versatility of the baitrunner feature. I find myself using it while re-rigging rods as well - its easier than flipping the bail open and shut while providing tension for tying knots.

Excellent reel

I wss not sure if I would line this reel because I do not use live bait, I'm a cut bait and plastics fan personally. However I still find the baitrunner incredibly useful for those subtle biting fish.
ProsGreat multi purpose reel

Love these reels! My third in different sizes and generations. When I’m feeling lazy and chunking or if bass are teasing the eels the Baitrunner feature is perfect. Easy maintenance, very well built!

Bait Runners......Incredible reels
November 29, 2017
I have 5 Baitrunners and they are all more then I could have ever expected!! Have the 1st series, 2nd series, and now what looks like their 3rd series in the BR line ups. I don't think there's a better live liner on the market for the price. BTW I sold all my Penn spinners and haven't looked back.
ProsDurability, function, and factory service.

Great reel.

I already have a Shimano Baitrunner 4000 and Shimano Baitrunner 6000. Normally I avoid overly complex fishing gear because simplicity = reliability but the Shimanos have proven themselves in some extreme conditions while saltwater fishing. I bought the 12000 D because of my positive experience with the smaller Shimanos which have been seriously overworked by some large, tough, saltwater fish.
The fish lost the those fights all but one time. July 2016 I was night-fishing with the 6000 and got hit and lost 300 yards of line even though the drag was dialed down pretty tight. The 6000 reel still works just fine. I expect to avenge that loss with the 12000 D.
ProsReliable and tough + easy to operate.
ConsNone so far.

Shimano replaces, any broken component after purchase. It's smooth and balanced well. I put mine on a shimano Terez, extra heavy duty, fast action rod.
ProsShimano repair plan is awesome! 20 bucks and they repair/replace or clean every component.

This is a very good reel - the drag is smooth and the range of resistance for the live bait function is very good. Easy positive bail operation and smooth retrieve. Had a great time catching stripers live lining pogies this fall around the Elizabeth Islands. Great value for the money.

Purchased one of these reels about a year back. I do mostly fluke and striped fishing with the reel and it's excellent. It's smooth has a pretty good drag and holds a decent amount of line. Although it's on the higher end price worth it's worth the extra money.

Great all around Surf Reel
March 24, 2016
I own 3 different sizes of the baitrunner (8,6 and 4K) and love them all. I use the 8k for chunking bait and the 6k when i am not sure if i will be tossing lures or want to sit back and relax with some bait. Some say the spool size might be a bit small but if you use braid in the 25 lb class it fits plenty. Hopefully Shimano never discontinues this amazing reel, i doubt they will.

One of my Fav's
March 24, 2016
The Shimano baitrunner is one of my favorite all time reels. I use them not only on the boat but also on the surf and the baitrunner feature is amazing. I use this 8000 on my 12 foot surf rod that i use mostly for chunking bait, but also use the 6000 off the surf and the 4000 on the boat. Excellent value for such a quality fishing reel.

i am new to saltwater fishing am a fresh water fisher and am looking to get in to salt water i am looking to pair this reel with a 9 or 10 foot rod for fishing from the beach throwing chunk bait or live bait i am all so going to be peir fishing with a 7 or 8 foot rod useing chunk bait or lures witch of these reels would work best and what rods can you recommend to pair with witch size reels for this type of fishing these are the average set ups for my area useing 30 or 40 lb braid
1 Answer
WIth the 10 foot rod I would pair it with the Shimano Ultegra ci4 5500 and for your pier setup a 6000 Penn clash would pair up with a 7 or 8 foot rod.

I’m considering getting one of these to put on a 7’ St. Croix Mojo Cat rod, would you recommend the 4000 or 6000? I’m leaning toward the 4000 since it is smaller and lighter. I will be using this setup mainly for carp.
1 Answer
I think the 4000 would pair up nicely with the St.Croix Mojo cat rod, my only concern is will the 15 pounds of drag handle the size carp your catching for that reason alone I would consider the 6000D.

I recently purchased the Shimano 8000 Baitrunner D from TD. How many yards of 30 lb braid will this reel hold? I cannot find this information anywhere specific to that lb test. Thanks again

Shimano does not provide the maximum line capacity for 30 lb braid on the 8000. You can count on getting around 320 yards.

The st croix legend surf 7' new model …… would that team up with the 4000 or would it be to small? Lure / spinners salt and some freshwater fishing are what I would use this for.
1 Answer
That rod and reel should pair up together great. A 4000 size reel is generally the size that I would put on a light saltwater and freshwater rod.

I would like to put one of these onto a St croix Legend 7' spinning rod what size would you recommend for size / balance etc?
1 Answer
I would most likely go with the 4000 size, but that also depends which Legend you are using because there are a few different sizes. For inshore rods, I would definitely go with the 4000.

does the lever on the back allows the real to free spool and than when a strike occurs you just flip the lever to engage
1 Answer
Hello John. When you get a hit, you simply crank the handle and that sends the lever forward and disengages free spool allowing the spool to operate normally. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!
