Great reel.
I already have a Shimano Baitrunner 4000 and Shimano Baitrunner 6000. Normally I avoid overly complex fishing gear because simplicity = reliability but the Shimanos have proven themselves in some extreme conditions while saltwater fishing. I bought the 12000 D because of my positive experience with the smaller Shimanos which have been seriously overworked by some large, tough, saltwater fish. The fish lost the those fights all but one time. July 2016 I was night-fishing with the 6000 and got hit and lost 300 yards of line even though the drag was dialed down pretty tight. The 6000 reel still works just fine. I expect to avenge that loss with the 12000 D.
ProsReliable and tough + easy to operate.
ConsNone so far.

Shimano!
Shimano replaces, any broken component after purchase. It's smooth and balanced well. I put mine on a shimano Terez, extra heavy duty, fast action rod.
ProsShimano repair plan is awesome! 20 bucks and they repair/replace or clean every component.

Shimano Baitrunner 8000D
This is a very good reel - the drag is smooth and the range of resistance for the live bait function is very good. Easy positive bail operation and smooth retrieve. Had a great time catching stripers live lining pogies this fall around the Elizabeth Islands. Great value for the money.

Shimano baitrunner 8000d
Purchased one of these reels about a year back. I do mostly fluke and striped fishing with the reel and it's excellent. It's smooth has a pretty good drag and holds a decent amount of line. Although it's on the higher end price worth it's worth the extra money.

Great all around Surf Reel
I own 3 different sizes of the baitrunner (8,6 and 4K) and love them all. I use the 8k for chunking bait and the 6k when i am not sure if i will be tossing lures or want to sit back and relax with some bait. Some say the spool size might be a bit small but if you use braid in the 25 lb class it fits plenty. Hopefully Shimano never discontinues this amazing reel, i doubt they will.

One of my Fav's
The Shimano baitrunner is one of my favorite all time reels. I use them not only on the boat but also on the surf and the baitrunner feature is amazing. I use this 8000 on my 12 foot surf rod that i use mostly for chunking bait, but also use the 6000 off the surf and the 4000 on the boat. Excellent value for such a quality fishing reel.

THE surf bait reel
I've been a Baitrunner user since high school, and still have two of the 4500Bs that I use regularly. I'm steadily upgrading my 4500's to the 6000Ds as I like them and the others have been in service for almost 10 years. I've never had a problem mechanically with this reel, and with annual maintenence and washing with fresh water thoroughly after each use, I don't think I will ever have problems. I use this reel with 30 lb Power Pro super slick and it'll catch just about anything in the east coast surf. If you are on the fence about moving to Shimano or you have never used a baitrunner, you need to give this reel a shot. There is nothing like looking over and seeing your rod bent over and hearing the baitrunner screaming!

An all around well built and reliable reel
have used this reel for strippers in New England and drum in TampaBay.The bail handels braided line with 0 problems and the bait drag and reel drag are very smooth.I owned a 3500 before I bought the 6000.They are my favorite reels.
Prosthe bail picks up braided line every time with out getting jammed in the side of the roller unlike competetors reels.great reel for live or any bottom bait and is so sensitive it works when a crab is trying to steal your bait....

Ultimate Snapper Reel.
If you were only allowed 1 reel for Snapper fishing in Victoria Australia the Baitrunner D 8000 or 12000 would be it. The Shimano Baitrunner D series Reels are the Kings of the seas during our Snapper season, This statement would be shared by any seasoned Victorian Snapper Angler, it is also a fashion crime to be seen without one as you would definitely be the odd man out!
ProsThis Reel is a gift from the fishing Gods!

Smooth durable performance
I couldn't be happier with the 6000D after several outings. So far everything has performed seamlessly. The rear to front drag transition is an awesome feature. I just ordered a second combo of Star Rods Handcrafted Live Bait and the Shimano Baitrunner D.

8000D Works For Me
I have been using the Baitrunner 8000D since it came out a few years ago and find it to be the best of all worlds. It is light enough for traveling, smooth operation for surf casting with enough drag for fish up to 40 lbs. only because I have not caught anything larger from shore. There is enough line capacity using Power Pro Braid 50 lbs.. This real has performed flawlessly every year with only minor care after each use.
ProsI liked this real so much I purchased a second real for my brother. Great value!
ConsNone experienced.

Worked like a charm.
We used this reel for albacore fishing off the coast of WA and it held up just great. You have to get one fish one and let it take out a fair amount of line so when you reel it in, it tightens down the braided line. It was a kick to used on these fast running fish.
ProsGreat price for a quality reel. Bait runner feature is great!
ConsWish it could hold a full 300 yds of line.

This is a top notch reel. I use it for bait fishing. I've also found the bait runner option to be useful for letting out line when trolling.

I recently purchased the Shimano 8000 Baitrunner D from TD. How many yards of 30 lb braid will this reel hold? I cannot find this information anywhere specific to that lb test. Thanks again
Shimano does not provide the maximum line capacity for 30 lb braid on the 8000. You can count on getting around 320 yards.

I'm pairing this reel with a star aerial 15-30 7 ft rod for live bait fishing. Mostly for the Gulf beaches and inshore stuff, big Snook & Tarpon what size mono and or braid would you recommend?
The Shimano 6000D would be a great choice to use with 40 lb braid for the application the combo will be used for.

I'm thinking about buying a St. Croix Legend 8 ft. surf rod. I would like to pair it up with a 6000 Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel for surf fishing and inshore. Would this be a good match? Thanks. Bill. We sent an earlier e-mail but forgot to mention the brand name St. Croix.
The St Croix Legend 8 ft would pair well with the 6000 Shimano Baitrunner D Spinning Reel for surf fishing.

The st croix legend surf 7' new model €€ would that team up with the 4000 or would it be to small? Lure / spinners salt and some freshwater fishing are what I would use this for.
That rod and reel should pair up together great. A 4000 size reel is generally the size that I would put on a light saltwater and freshwater rod.

I would like to put one of these onto a St croix Legend 7' spinning rod what size would you recommend for size / balance etc?
I would most likely go with the 4000 size, but that also depends which Legend you are using because there are a few different sizes. For inshore rods, I would definitely go with the 4000.

What is the difference between Baitrunner OC and D series?
The D series has one more ball bearing. Other than that the only real difference is the color of the real.

Can you use 20lb braided line on the 6000D, or is the minimum 30lb?
Hello Brian. You can absolutely use 20 pound line on that reel. The numbers you see in the descriptions are merely to give you an idea of how much line each size reel will hold. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

does the lever on the back allows the real to free spool and than when a strike occurs you just flip the lever to engage
Hello John. When you get a hit, you simply crank the handle and that sends the lever forward and disengages free spool allowing the spool to operate normally. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!
