Just buy one (or more)
March 22, 2020
I've always liked Shimano reels, and when my wife and I agreed it was time for new reels to replace our almost 30-year old Shimanos with the original quickfire system, I started looking around at what Shimano had these days. I was shocked to find they had spinning reels with the Quickfire II system that cost less than $15 shipped to my door. I figured there must have been a misprint. So I took a chance (or so I thought) and bought 2 of these in the 2000 series. We do a lot of small stream and river kayak fishing, and typically have 4 or 6 lb. line spooled on reels this size with 6' medium action rods. Well, these reels were just the ticket. I reserved judgement until I made a few trips with my new $12 reel. Man, I gotta say I'm blown away at how good this little reel is. I can't believe I bought it new for $12. I would have paid $20 for it 40 years ago. So far, I've had it on several trips for largemouth, Guadalupes and whites on central TX rivers, and in the first 5 trips I've caught over 100 fish on this reel. It has performed flawlessly. I figure if it breaks on my next trip, that will be roughly $2/trip for the reel. But I don't expect that. In fact, I expect to get another 30 years out of this Shimano the way I did my last one that this replaced. Either way, I'm one happy camper. Just get it!
ProsExtremely good performance to price ratio. Tackle direct was perfect.
ConsNone so far!

Why did I doubt?
September 22, 2020
I was skeptical about this because of the price and relatively slow gear ratio. I didn't feel particularly impressive but on the water it was fast enough retrieval, smooth, and the quick fire works great. I've been using these since the 80's, the only thing that has changed is that they are even a better value now.
ProsRear Drag, light weight, quickfire, value

Today we have many options whit multiple ball bearings, power drags, fancy handles, seals and high price tickets.
But this economy reel for small and medium river fish make a great job for few dollars.
ProsPerformance and price.
ConsFor the price, really nothing.

Good teaching tool

I learned to fish with this style of reel, and they all still work today. The price is attractive for teaching youngins and the quick fire makes it easy. You won’t feel bad when the youngster you’re teaching launches it 10 yards further than you’re willing to walk out into the water when they let go of the whole thing. Be glad you paid what you did and they didn’t toss your twin power out there!
ProsPrice, ease, durability
ConsNot something you want to whip out and show your friend right after he says Stella, you?ll end up in the water too!

this is an excellent reel that is comparable to many, if not most, at twice or more the cost. It was a surprise to learn the quality. It does not have instant anti-reverse, but does have one hand operation casting.

It was purchased for spider rigging and grandchildren use, and works exactly as desired to date. It has a satisfactory drag, an excellent handle grip for smaller hands, has suffered no damage from the bumps, drops, and drags associated with child use.
