The Shimano Torium Star Drag Reels are new to Shimano's Torium series reels. They are compact, rigid, and powerful saltwater conventional reels with excellent castability and durability expected by saltwater anglers.

  • S Compact Body: Power-Rigidity-Durability, results in a reel that feels one size smaller in your hand. The B side sideplate is all one piece contributing to both rigidity and in-the-hand palming comfort. The A side side plate has the handle, drag adjustment and cast control knob.
  • E.I. is a second layer of surface treatment that is added after the anodizing process. This treatment is forced into any micro sized surface impurities, giving salt no place to adhere thus preventing corrosion.
  • Cross Carbon Drag: The ideal material for the high drag pressure setting, with smoothness and consistent performance.

Fantastic reel!
The fast retrieve ratio is excellent for deep jigging and bottom fishing. Especially when you need to get up fast to re-bait and get back down! They are a big hit on my boat every time a new guest uses them.
ProsLightweight. Retrieve ratio. Smooth drag.
ConsNone.

great reel
Superb casting and fast retrieve. At this price there's no need to spend $500 plus on a 2 speed unless you have weak hands.

Excellent quality in a small package
The quality of these reels is excellent, however, the new Torium reels are far more compact than their predecessors. If balance and appearance are important to you, you may want to up-size your reel selection.

Awesome live bait reel
I have been using toriums for many years. I loved the older generation and was a little skeptical of this generation because of the smaller size. However, after using both a 30 and 20 size I really do like these just as well. They are much lighter and just as reliable.
ProsGreat reel for half the cost of the trinidads of equal value in my opinion

Perfect
I have two of the 20s and just got the 16. It will hold 500yrds of 50lb braid and it's like a little tank. Pairing it up with my new St Croix legend surf 11' rod.
ProsSize, value, everything...

Great reel on price point
I have the older shimano torium 20 and loved it. I went to buy another and saw they have a new model. It's smaller, better, nicer looking. All good things. These are my surf reels I'll use from bull reds, to big jacks, to medium size sharks
ProsPound for pound champ

Super Smooth!
This is an awesome reel. It casts great (I can easily average 40 yard casts on the boat) and reeling it is as smooth as a baby butt. I mainly use it for casting 2-3 ounce irons.

nice real
This is a replacement for the first one that I received from Tackle Direct which had a jerky drag. The new one has a much smoother drag much like my other Trinidads and Toriums. Props to Tackle Direct for exchanging the defective one for me.
ProsSmall size, large capacity and casts like crazy. I use on my Lamiglas GSB 1802m !5' surf pole to cast 100 plus yards out into the Willamette and Columbia rivers to catch the mighty White Sturgeon which can grow to over 9' in length and weigh in excess of 300#!
ConsYou can't get it with green stamps!

nice reel for the money
Went out around so cali looking for yellowtails. Caught some decent sizes 15-30 pounders. Reel handled them with no problems. But compared to my trinidad it's not as smooth. But the price difference is almost double so can't complain. Other than that good reel.
ProsNice looking reel. Had no issues reeling up 30pound yellowtails.

mauriciorpo03@hotmail.com I just came from a fishing trip to Colombian Pacific Oceans. Lots of yellowfin tunas in 40 to 50 pounds range. Some Dorados of 30 pounds and sailfish of 90 - 100. My equipment is very old and heavy. Senator 114H and a rod Senator special. I was very tired after each fight.I need to replace my old equipment for a new one. First question is Conventional or Spinning? Most of the time we fish with live baits from the boat but we trolling lures as well and some times slow jigging for Cubera snappers and groupers. My budget is $400 - 500 for the reel and the rod. I will use Power Pro to spool the reel. If Conventional I will buy a Torium 16HGA, If Spinning a Daiwa Saltist 4500H. I want a light equipment. What do you think about? Conventional or Spinning. Additionally can you recommend a rod to match each reel??? I will appreciate your advice.
1 Answers
Conventional over spinning for the fish that your targeting. The Torium 16HGA would be a good fit with a Shimano TFS63MH Trevala F 6'3" Med Heavy Spinning.
