Catch mackerel, tuna and other big game with the lightweight power and solid construction of these star-drag conventional reels. Shimano Torium Star Drag Reels are new to Shimano's Torium series reels. They are compact, rigid and powerful saltwater conventional reels with excellent castability and durability - a must for saltwater. Many top anglers use them bottom fishing or live-bait fishing as they are built for these extreme applications.

The Shimano Torium Star Drag comes in nearly a dozen models to find the perfect conventional reel. TackleDirect has right-hand and left-hand models with either an egg handle or power handle and several gear ratio options. All of them have specially treated anti-rust bearings and cross carbon drag that both result in the smoothest runs you've experienced. There's nothing conventional about this reel that comes with a satisfaction guarantee. Call or email us with any product questions.

Shimano Torium Star Drag Conventional Reel Features:

  • S Compact Body: Power, rigidity, durability results in a reel that feels one size smaller in your hand. The B-side sideplate is all one piece, contributing to both rigidity and in-the-hand palming comfort. The A-side sideplate has the handle, drag adjustment and cast control knob.
  • E.I.: This is the second layer of surface treatment that is added after the anodizing process. This treatment is forced into any micro-sized surface impurities, giving salt no place to adhere thus preventing corrosion.
  • Cross Carbon Drag: The ideal material for the high drag pressure setting, with smoothness and consistent performance.

Makes bottom fishing fun again!
February 3, 2021
I have the Torium 20 PG and use it exclusively for bottom fishing off the NC coast. Loaded with 65 pound test Power Pro, it is outstanding for Beeliners, Triggerfish, and the often seen but rarely allowed to keep American Red. Also see my fair share AJs and this little reel has no problem hauling them to the top! Currently paired with a Tiger Lite jigging rod but I have the Tsunami Slow pitch acid-wrapped on order. Can't wait to hit the Black Sea Bass and 'Togs!
ProsLight weight. You can hammer down the drag and it will pull like a mule! Low cost and comes with the Power Handle. I am ordering a lefty model soon to give my right a break!
ConsNone, other than I wish I had one years ago!

Great all-rounder for my lightweight SoCal setup for bonito and yellowtail!

Casts super well with a 42g Colt Sniper and surface irons. Even hooked up with a Black Sea Bass and it held its own drag wise. Replaced a Daiwa Lexa. For this old school finger line winder coming from Newell's back in the 80s, this is a dream and inexpensive.
ProsSmall and packs a punch
ConsHolds a lot less line than the 16 and drag is less.

from Colombia asked:
June 10, 2016 I just came from a fishing trip to Colombian Pacific Oceans. Lots of yellowfin tunas in 40 to 50 pounds range. Some Dorados of 30 pounds and sailfish of 90 - 100. My equipment is very old and heavy. Senator 114H and a rod Senator special. I was very tired after each fight.I need to replace my old equipment for a new one. First question is Conventional or Spinning? Most of the time we fish with live baits from the boat but we trolling lures as well and some times slow jigging for Cubera snappers and groupers. My budget is $400 - 500 for the reel and the rod. I will use Power Pro to spool the reel. If Conventional I will buy a Torium 16HGA, If Spinning a Daiwa Saltist 4500H. I want a light equipment. What do you think about? Conventional or Spinning. Additionally can you recommend a rod to match each reel??? I will appreciate your advice.
1 Answer
Conventional over spinning for the fish that your targeting. The Torium 16HGA would be a good fit with a Shimano TFS63MH Trevala F 6'3" Med Heavy Spinning.
