Shimano Tyrnos Saltwater Trolling Reels feature an open top crossbar design and Shimano's stainless steel A-RB anti-rust bearings. Other key features designed primarily for trolling are a ratcheting lever drag to eliminate any lever movement caused by boat vibration and a loud clicker with enough tension to hold large baits. Additional features include oversized gears for power while maintaining a high-speed 5.0:1 gear ratio, and an extra long handle shank with an oversized ergonomic rubber power grip. Shimano Tyrnos reels are constructed with diecast aluminum frames and graphite sideplates to reduce weight while maintaining strength and durability.

Ratcheting guide plates. Regal look to them. Plenty of drag. Just all around nice reels with plenty of stopping power if you need it.

    TLD upgrade
    May 18, 2019
Bought this over a TLD 30II, same drag pressure, slightly different gear ratio than the TLD. For $60 more dollars to have a metal body reel with the same performance features of a TLD. Waiting for the wind to die down so I can try to out.

    Great all-around reel
    December 24, 2016
I bought the Shimano Tyrnos for the bluefin/yellowfin tuna bite that's been happening off Southern California and I was very pleased with this reel. Simple enough by design, strong and powerful it works well with flylining bait and is a good caster. Had a chance to jig some flatfalls and the reel is very functional and smooth in this regard.

    Tyrnos 12
    December 20, 2013
I have the Tynos 12, and it's a nice reel. It's pretty heavy, but it definately has some power and a nice drag. It also casts pretty well for a reel of that size, but personally, I mostly use it when its in a rod holder most of the day while trolling niner rigs for stripers.

Tyrnos 12II for long range fishing
    August 20, 2012
I just returned from my 3rd long range trip using this reel. It has now seen two 7 day traps and one 10 day trip. Mine is spooled with 65lb braid and topped with 40lb mono or flurocarbon (for bait fishing). I use the reel for both yo-yo jigging and bait fishing and I am very satisfied with it. The rell has oversized drags that function very smoothly and plenty of cranking ower. I have boated yellowtail to 40 lbs and tuna to 60+ and have had ZERO complaints. I have officially nick named it the pissy mosquito for it's high speed winding noise. For the price, this reel can't be beat.
    ProsPrice Drag strength and smoothness
ConsThat darned buzzing noise when you wind it.

I have 4 shimano's reel but relatively small in size compared to Tyrnos 50. My question, is it normal for the clicker to sound when winding?

I'm going to Alaska fishing this summer and want to buy a reel to fish for Halibut and bottom fish. I was looking at picking up the Shimano TYR30II but now wonder if I should spend a little more and pick up the TYR50. Would that be an overkill getting that reel?

Kim, For you application the 30 will be more than enough reel for what your fishing for.
