Great surf reel.
I spooled the reel with ULT5500XTD Sufix 832 super braid and I'm very happy with it's performance. I have it paired with a Tsunami Airwave Elite 9'6" medium rod to use as a light weight plug rod. The drag is smooth, adjusts easily, and is very effective for landing fish in the surf. The slow oscillation spool movement and Aero Wrap retrieve with long spool shape really enables long effortless casts. Not a sealed reel but I've had no problems with it getting soaked when hit be waves.
ProsLight weight. Excellent drag. Casts very well.

Since I fish less than 20 times a year, I was always hesitant in purchasing an "expensive" reel: I'm glad the Ultegra XTD has changed my mind. You really do get what you pay for. Casts amazing-Shimano is the way to go.

This is my 3rd reel of this model. Very smooth and unbelievable casting distance. Love the quick drag set up as well. I will be buying more of these.
Proscasting, smooth reeling, and quick drag
ConsNeeds larger knob on handle.

good casting reel
I own the penn spinfisher 7500 long cast version and overall it's a great reel but a bit on the heavy side. I decided to give the xtd 5500 a try since it's about ~10oz lighter than the penn and paired it with Daiwa Coastal Salt Pro Surf 10.6 (got the rod on sale @tackledirect for $99). I took it out for a spin this past weekend and I got about 100-120 yards on the combo and im no expert at casting by all means....and should mention that im using the 30lbs power pro super slick (which i think gets more distance due to its slick coating). Overall im happy with the xtd 5500 only drawback is that it's not water proof.
