Good Medium Setup for Surf Fishing
February 20, 2021
Bought the 2 piece 7' 6" model for surf fishing in South East Florida. Held up to multiple Jack Crevalle. The textured grip above the reel seat was useful to gain leverage while fighting the fish. Guide inserts were good quality, there were no cracks and they didn't pop out unexpectedly.

However, I felt the guide frames could be reinforced better, such as adding a third brace on the other side, like the largest guide near the reel seat.

Great Surf Fishing rod!
September 9, 2020
I have a 8' 1 piece Star Stellar surf rod that I use for primarily Albie and Bonito from the surf. I also well as some back bay fishing. This surf rod does not disappoint it has good back bone and is very comfortable to fish with. The rod is light weight and allows for hours of fishing with little to no fatigue. Pick one up you will not be disappointed.
ProsLight weight, powerful, good components, cork grip tape great Value for the price.

Tough Rods That Get The Job Done!
September 26, 2019
I cannot say anything bad about these rods. I bought 3 1 piece rods, 2 x 7'6 and one 8'. They are incredible. The 8' is my favorite for casting 2 oz kastmaster style spoons. They cast far. I have them all paired with Slammer III's. Perfect match for the surf and jetties, tanks. I've had them a while now and they take a beating and the guide rigs stay on. I'm so glad I upgraded to these from chain store cheapies.

Cast like a dream.

So I don't know how it handles any size fish just yet because I'm the only guy in NJ that didn't go on the recent bite as of late. Soon tho, if it's anything like other Star products it's wonderful. I've never had any problems with their rods.

Great for the money
November 23, 2018
The SG76IS is great for fishing back bays with smaller lures and can handle days in the surf when it’s not too rough. It’s rated to two ounces but I wouldn’t think to throw that much on it.
ProsAffordable and looks high quality
ConsA little over rated as far as lures go

Nice light surf rod.
November 8, 2018
I was looking for a replacement of an old light action shorter (71/2 ft.) surf rod that I've had since the 70's! It took a while to find, but the star stellar lite fit the bill perfectly! I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure it will be great. I can't wait to try it out hopefully this spring in Florida casting jigs for pompano in the surf. The rod it's self has great components and is well built. Well worth the money!

Favorite 2 piece surf rod
October 10, 2018
I love this rod. Short butt length. Big guides, none of that silly micro stuff. Can throw 3/8-1.5oz. I use this rod to throw small bucktails, sp minnows and plastics in the NJ surf. Super fun to fish and handles keeper stripers without trouble. It is on the moderate-fast side, don't expect a very fast rod. It allows you to make far casts without much effort. It is just right for smaller presentations and I am super picky about rods.
Prosshort butt 2 piece stripper guide on the bottom half super light weight with plenty of backbone big guides allow knots with heavy leaders to pass freely

Excellent 2 piece 8 foot surf rod for NJ
October 10, 2018
The rod is a little under rated as it is pretty stiff. I would say sweet spot is towards the upper range. I would rate it at 3/4-3oz. It is a very light rod with big guides and short butt length compared to other brands. In my opinion there is no point of owning a 8 foot rod with 20" butt length like st croix seems to like to do. This one is about 13". I really like that the stripper guide is on the bottom half of the rod. The guides are big and few and allow any kind of knot with heavy leader to pass through without getting destroyed. For the money I don't think you can do better for a 2 piece 8 foot rod and I have tried many.
Prosshort butt big guides light weight 2 piece stripper guide on the bottom half
Conshonestly none

Hello, is the 10' a good match for a BG4000 and is this rod a 50/50 split? Thanks
1 Answer
The 4500 would match up a little better because of weight and line capacity, the rod is currently out of stock. When it does become available we'll be able to tell the split of the 10 foot rod.

For the star SG90IS Surf Spin (2pc) I was wondering if this would be a good plugging rod for stripers and blues off nj surf? Also what size penn slammer 3 would be the best matchup for this rod?
1 Answer
Either the 10 foot paired with the 4500 slammer III or the 5500 paired with the 11 foot would be a great combo for the surf.

Best reel size for the 8 foot 1/2 to 3? Is it a 50/50 split?

The best reel size would be 4000 Penn, Shimano, and Okuma 40 reels. For a Daiwa i would have to advise a 3000 or 3500 size reel.
