A Masterpiece
Definately a masterpiece of engineering & product design. The finest reel I have ever owned. Machining is exceptional; surfaces are finely finished.
Extremely smooth operation, I can see all of my friends begging to try it. I own & have fished 3 Stella's and they are very smooth too, but the VanStall had me smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Really, really 'ROCKSOLID'
The price is money very, very, very well spent.
ProsVery light, extemely smooth operation, Rock solid feel, machining & finish are superb. This reel has to be 'best in class'.

Love this reel!
First Van Stall and I'm not disappointed. Perfect for my uses. I pair it up with with a 10'6 St croix. Balance is great. Could see it being good on a 9' as well.
ProsGreat reel for the surf! Can tear down and service yourself witch I love. Gets you in touch with your gear and leaves you worry free
ConsNone so far.

VR 200
I have this reel on a St Croix Legend 10'6 rod and the combination is light weight, powerful and very well balanced. The drag, casting distance and retrieval speed is more than adequate for The CC Canal and is perfect for surfcasting from the beach or rocks.
ProsLight weight, nice retrieval speed, ample line capacity, casts well.
Consno right hand retrieve

Just what I was waiting for!
I am not a die hard Montauk surfcaster or rock hopper. Strong enough and sealed enough to fish from shore and jetties and light enough to take on the kayak. Did have to take the the $800 VanStaal plunge. So happy with it, and it's versatility.

Maybe a lemon
This is my 7th Van Staal. Currently own 3 others to include...vs100, vs200 and vr200. After owning the v50 for a week and spending 4 days pier fishing for Spanish mackerel and ladyfish (that's all that was biting)...I blew out the drag. Was fishing 15 lb braid with about 6-7 lbs of drag. Reel is supposed to put out a max of 25. Now with a locked drag puts out about 5 lbs. The other con I had about this reel is the line lay. I own my own line winding machine so I know it was put on correctly. The line near the top of the spool tends to gap itself from the spool edge. I filled to max capacity and was getting a lot of wind knots. Which is very unusual for me since I always hand bail regardless. It was because the VR 50 filled completely has very loose wraps at that very top spool section. I would look before casting and you could visibly see the loose wraps. I corrected the loose wraps by cutting off about 25 yards of line. This reel likes a 90% spool fill. I cast for distance and like to run my spools at 100%-110% fill. I do not have this problem with other reels. It is smoother than I thought it would be. Has good power Does not feel like 37" retrieve (same as a Shimano 4000 size reel). Perhaps due to large handle...I am either not turning it as fast or just just doesn't seem as fast. I wanted to love this reel. Under 9 oz, great line capacity (360 of 20 braid. I put an eyeballed 40-50 yards of 16 mono and a line machine measured 310 of 15 Ultracast).

Will get reel to Van Staal and see what the drag problem is. For time being...will use VS100 and Stella 4000 and Stradic sw5000 pg.

Solid real
I was looking for a surf reel that was solid but light, and had a ton of line cap. this is it. With the choice to add on the 200 size spool you can have the line cap you need for whatever fish your looking for without paying the price for a VS

Worth every penny
I purchased this reel to fish the cape cod canal . I paired it with an 11 foot St croix mojo rod. This combo worked better than expected. Reel is super light and casts a mile . The drag is where this reel really shines super smooth and strong. I was able to put the brakes on a 30lb bass and and crank it in against 10 knot current . I’m planning on purchasing another for the boat it’s the only reel I want to use now . Get one you will not be disappointed.
ProsSuper light ,super strong ,and a gorgeous piece of machinery
ConsPricey but worth it

A Beast of a Reel
As a Avid surfcaster, i needed a reel that suited my needs. Best reel in my book, i purchased the VR150 for Bass and Blues and ordered a VR125 spool for Fluke and other small target fish. Great Reel , just make sure to water it down and put a little Van staal grease on the Shaft after use..Salvo's Customs lures Approved !!!
ProsThe best hand down !!!

I ordered a VR50 and can't wait to get it. The one questions I have is that I see you can spool 380 yards of 20 lb braid on it but could you go 30 lb braid and if so how many yards of 30 could possibly be spooled? If putting a little heavier braid on the reel, will that effect the casting or effeiecny of the reel? Thanks
1 Answers
Going from 20lb to 30lb will not make big difference when it comes to casting distance. You would get some where around 300-320 yards of line on the reel.
