Definately a masterpiece of engineering & product design. The finest reel I have ever owned. Machining is exceptional; surfaces are finely finished.
Extremely smooth operation, I can see all of my friends begging to try it. I own & have fished 3 Stella's and they are very smooth too, but the VanStall had me smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Really, really 'ROCKSOLID'
The price is money very, very, very well spent.
ProsVery light, extemely smooth operation, Rock solid feel, machining & finish are superb. This reel has to be 'best in class'.

First Van Stall and I'm not disappointed. Perfect for my uses. I pair it up with with a 10'6 St croix. Balance is great. Could see it being good on a 9' as well.
ProsGreat reel for the surf! Can tear down and service yourself witch I love. Gets you in touch with your gear and leaves you worry free
ConsNone so far.

I was skeptical when I got this reel because of all the hype, boy was I wrong. It's my go to reel for everything now, I use it for lakes, ponds, surf fishing and deep sea fishing. While it may not be as smooth as a Shimano or Diawa, I haven't screwed it up by dropping it in the surf or getting dunked in the waves while standing in the surf fishing. I have destroyed the others doing that. It just happens when you fish. I'm not willing to try that with a Stella or Saltiga for twice the price. Still feels brand new 4 years later, no failures.
ProsBuilt to last, holds a ton of 30 lb braid. Handles all fishing conditions for me.
ConsI don't like the knob on reel handle.

smooth and light VR200

I bought this to pair with my Lamiglas Carbon surf 11’ MH
Light... even lighter than my penn slammer 5500...
Smooth and easy to crank...
I only used it in 2 occasions, so far it performed well... But I still have to catch a big fish with it, to see how will it hold up...
ProsLight and smooth
ConsI don’t have that “big hands” but the rotor keeps on hitting my fingers

VS has some more work to do
March 3, 2020
I own a VR50 and VR200. Both were excellent out of the box. Extremely light and smooth, both the drag as well as when cranking. Within a month though, the handle had torn off the VR50. Within 4 months, the line roller broke, the main gear failed due to a shimming issue and saltwater had gotten into the VR200. The good news is that VS quickly addressed all issues. The bad news is that these reels don’t yet perform long term as marketed in the surf. VS has improved the seals on the VR200 but now those reels are noticeably harder to crank out of the box. I hope they continue to improve the execution on this particular line.
Pros-very light -very smooth -customer service aka Craig
Cons-earlier models not waterproof as marketed -handle connection not durable enough -shimming issues with main gear

Check out the St Croix AVS96MHF2, matches up really well with the VR50 for your application. 20lb braid should do the trick.

June 24, 2018
I ordered a VR50 and can't wait to get it. The one questions I have is that I see you can spool 380 yards of 20 lb braid on it but could you go 30 lb braid and if so how many yards of 30 could possibly be spooled? If putting a little heavier braid on the reel, will that effect the casting or effeiecny of the reel? Thanks
1 Answer
Going from 20lb to 30lb will not make big difference when it comes to casting distance. You would get some where around 300-320 yards of line on the reel.
