A Masterpiece

Definately a masterpiece of engineering & product design. The finest reel I have ever owned. Machining is exceptional; surfaces are finely finished.
Extremely smooth operation, I can see all of my friends begging to try it. I own & have fished 3 Stella's and they are very smooth too, but the VanStall had me smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Really, really 'ROCKSOLID'
The price is money very, very, very well spent.
ProsVery light, extemely smooth operation, Rock solid feel, machining & finish are superb. This reel has to be 'best in class'.

First Van Stall and I'm not disappointed. Perfect for my uses. I pair it up with with a 10'6 St croix. Balance is great. Could see it being good on a 9' as well.
ProsGreat reel for the surf! Can tear down and service yourself witch I love. Gets you in touch with your gear and leaves you worry free
ConsNone so far.

VR150 Better Than Expected
August 24, 2019
Was originally hesitant to buy a VR after some feedback on early models and problems seen with friends. However as of this review it appears Van Staal has made quite a few changes and improvements. The Reel is smooth out of box especially for a sealed reel, feels substantial in the hand without being heavy and looks great.
ProsFully Sealed Light for its size and capacity Smoother than a standard VS(X) Bailess kit included Still expensive but not compared to a VSX or Zeebaas Looks great VS tool included
ConsStill made in China Not cheap Great for many applications especially the surf but still isn?t a VS or Zeebaas Finish could be better

Love it! I think...

Overall I absolutely love this reel. Its light weight and the profile make it a dream to fish with. I have it paired with a Medium-Heavy 7'6" St. Croix Legend Tournament, which makes for a dream pair. The VR50 is comparable to a 40 or 4000 series reel not a 50 or 5000 series as I originally thought. Now for the unfortunate fate... after 3 months of what I would consider quite light use it failed me. While beach fishing I hooked a 26" snook. Now that's nothing to write home about when there's 40" plus monsters out there. When the fish ran my first crank down the handle twisted off the reel. Being dark outside I was really confused with what happened so I hand lined the fish in and put it away. The next day come to find out the screw that connects the handle to the main gear sheared off! What the heck right... So it's under warranty, I go to the local tackle shop. They can't do warranty work on Van Staal but say they've seen this on other VR50's. That was concerning but I was sure that Van Staal will find the issue with the series and make it right. I then call Van Staal and they direct me to a local warranty center. Local as in Panama City, FL while I am located 4 hours south in Tampa, FL... I mailed it into them out of pocket, wait a week and no word. I called them for a status update and was then given more unfortunate news. Van Steal does not have the main gears made for repairs yet. Now I don't need a main gear but if the shop is unable to remove the broken screw then the main gear will have to be replaced. Turns out that there is several VR reels in the shop for repair but for striped main gears. In conclusion I really want to love this reel. I am just concerned that a low budget Van Staal just isn't their niche. They make great if not the best high end reels, but can they cut costs without cutting quality is the question. Only time will tell but I am considering to return it for something that I can trust. I would recommend this reel but at your own risk and you may want to wait for Van Staal to work out the kinks.
ProsSuper Light, Smooth, Casting, Water tight
ConsDifficult warranty process, handle failure, main gear failure

The Bail hits your knuckles when reeling ! I don't have really large hands . I need to hold it after my index finger not after my middle finger as I'm used to. The foot could have been a little bit taller. There is no click on retrieve? It's manual bail . I know this what Van Staal is known for on the big surf reels, a bail-less system so you don't snap off heavy lures. But, for a small reel that will be used with light lures I would have liked to have seen an auto tripping bail . I like to put poppers in motion just before they hit the water . Have to fumble around now. All small thing I know but it's $500 bucks!
ProsGood build quality .

Got the VR50 setup with St Croix Legend Glass. Its great for both inshore fishing and freshwater. This reel looks amazing and works very smooth. The drag sound is also another plus, it just feel like its working. So far been using it for LM and SB. The size of this reel is also perfect for me, not too big and not too small where you feel its not "enough" for the job. This is a strong solid reel!
ProsCan use for fresh and salt water setup!

My 4th VS and for the first 4 months I owned this real it was just as advertised. Unfortunately, I fished it like I would any other VS, 3-4 days a week, dinked under water and dragged in fish in the 10-20 pound range with good frequency. Then the problems started showing up. First the retrieve got sluggish and then grindy. Brought it in for service and the machine bushings were wearing down and leaving metal flakes in the gear box. Had it cleaned and re-packed with new grease. Worked well for another 3 months and then like another reviewer here, hooked into a 38 inch bass which gave a good account of himself and by the end of the ordeal, the drag was burned out and locked-up. Had to replace the spool with the drag system since it could not be repaired ($120). In my view, this is nothing more than a cheap tinnny knock-off where the company is simply capitalizing on the name of the brand to charge an amount of money which in no way produces the value one would expect from a VS.
ProsIt says Van Staal
ConsIt doesn?t fish anything like a Van Staal. Very surprised that the company which made its reputation in building an indestructible reel would introduce such a weak reel into its line-up.

Purchased a new VR50 in advance of a trip the first week of May. Unfortunately, the reel is defective and I was unable to use it on my trip. This was not discovered until after Tackle Direct's 30 day return policy had expired. I have no issue with this policy and Tackle Direct tried to get me in touch with Van Staal. Never heard from their contact person and left a message for him as well.

After emailing Van Staal with no response, I called customer service and was instructed to send the reel to their repair shop at my expense. Needless to say at this point I am disappointed in the product and lack of contact/concern from Van Staal

I'm sure the reel can be repaired. However, I'm not sure if I will ever be able to have a 100% confidence in the product. Only time will tell..

After trying out my buddys VR I knew I had to have one!!! Much smoother cranking than the coffee grinder VS series, and sealed!! Perfect for my uses, surfcasting with the occaisonal splash in water and sand.
Prosquality machining, smooth crank for a sealed reel, casts well, looks awesome
ConsPrice, but well worth it if it lasts

The Rolex Of Reels
April 7, 2019
I travel all over the world to fish and need absolute reliability for my travel set-ups. This is my second Van Staal and I can not over state how tough these reels are. I submerged them in the surf, buried them in sand, and dropped them on the rocks and they keep working like new. The VR 50 is simply amazing- super light with a heavy duty bail. Perfect for inshore fishing but with enough drag and capacity for light off-shore use.
Prosweight, the heavy duty bail, line capacity
Consno bailess conversion

I ordered a VR50 and can't wait to get it. The one questions I have is that I see you can spool 380 yards of 20 lb braid on it but could you go 30 lb braid and if so how many yards of 30 could possibly be spooled? If putting a little heavier braid on the reel, will that effect the casting or effeiecny of the reel? Thanks
1 Answer
Going from 20lb to 30lb will not make big difference when it comes to casting distance. You would get some where around 300-320 yards of line on the reel.
